Album Notes Jim Matus, guitarist/composer of the critically acclaimed band PARANOISE, has created a new band, MAWWAL. This is a further
refinement of Matus’ unique world fusion style. MAWWAL is long established and highly acclaimed on the New England club and festival
circuit. MAWWAL performs both original music and arrangements of traditional Middle Eastern music in a spirited and beautiful
trance-inducing ensemble. Inventive vocal arrangements in English and Arabic weave through the laouto (Greek lute) and violin,
augmented by traditional percussion (tabla, dumbek, frame drum, riq) in what has been called a "new genre" by Progression Magazine.
Throughout the Middle East "Mawwal" is a form of popular music that often criticizes society and is performed through improvisation.
================
Featured prominently on bass is Percy Jones (Brand X, Brian Eno, David Sylvian, Tunnels). The record also contains two previously
unreleased songs, featuring legendary Qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (tracks 2 and 6).
"We were given permission to use these tracks by the lawyer for Nusrat's estate. I isolated the vocal and wrote totally new music
around his voice, creating an original and smooth blend of the Mawwal band and the beautiful voice of this great master." (Jim Matus)
"For fans of Peter Gabriel’s brand of world music, Mawwal should be the next step, as this is the most advanced fusion of Middle
Eastern and western progressive music we’ve heard." -(Kenisis)
“If you have any familiarity at all with Peter Gabriel's explorations into the music of other cultures, MAWWAL is what that could've
evolved into, pushed further by a quantum leap. "Black Flies" is at once experimental & passionate. Traditional pieces from Libya,
Syria & Yemen are explored and then blown wide open with amazing arrangements by Jim that allow western perspectives to swim & mingle
in such an intense yet flowing way. The results are spectacular. I'd urge anyone reading this page to check out MAWWAL (as well as
Jim Matus' other band PARANOISE). This CD has captivated me in one evening and it might just snare you too!” -(Ray Dorsey/Chaos
realm)
"Inspired by musicians like Peter Gabriel, Karsh Kale, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Hamza el Din, Mawwal takes world music in an
entirely new direction.” (Sheryl Hunter, critic, The Recorder, Greenfield, MA)

Aaron M. Brown If the Grammys meant anything... Jim Matus would win one for this album!
Fans of Paranoise, and those whose interest is piqued by the above descriptions, should buy Black Flies immediately.
The essential elements of Paranoise are intact here: the fearless disregard for musical borders, the serpentine guitar solos, the
general blend of virtuosity and edge. The mood leans more toward the contemplative rather than the confrontational, but the overall
intensity is not diminished.
In my opinion, this is a more holistic work than the previous Paranoise albums, much as I like them. The vocals are more tasteful,
more seamlessly integrated...nothing threatens the flow.
Highly recommended! Read less....

Roland Kreuscher Convincing establishment of a self created style! Well, comparisons to both CDs from Paranoise that happily can be found here on CDbaby are inevitable. (And therefore 4 stars might be
enough.) The first results of that comparison are: more of the same (more or less), but(!)also more of the same quality! Perhaps a
little more rock-song oriented. And the integrated world/folk-samples sound even more like really having been played by "brigades of
folk/world(?!)-musicians" while recording the takes for 'Black Flies'. Perhaps not quite that adventurous anymore. But then
everything sounds so routined (in the best sense; yet), ... masters at work, showing how to play this(!) style ... Then, fretless-
bass-ikon Percy Jones, yes it's really him ... as if he always had played in this context, fabulous (but not dominant!). Now, read
Tamara's review below (better skip Joseph's) and listen to the samples. If you like them: exspect the complete takes on the CD to be
better. But, music on Paranoise's "Ishq" is even a little better than that. So, take 'em both ... Read less....
Tamara at CD Baby
From tracks bordering on dark progressive rock, almost nodding to King Crimson to fully fleshed-out world pop in the vein of Peter
Gabriel to guitar-rich Afropop-informed sonic worlds like that of Youssou N’Dour, to pieces crafted around pre-recorded vocals of
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mawwal blends epic world rock from multiple traditions, honoring the both the separate and collective
identities of them all. Taking songs and styles from Libya, Pakistan, Syria, Uzbekistan, West Africa, Yemen and Bulgaria, their sound
is thick and abundant, often stormy and always impassioned and intense. Black Flies is truly a hearty feast for the ears, and
instrumentally, about as generous as one can get. Including full chorus, tabla, guitars, bass, marimba, lauoto, ethnic percussion as
well as drum set, bansuri flute, violin, and endless combinations and textures of all of these, Mawwal embodies the epitome of world
fusion while still winning the hearts of any purist with their treatment of culture and tradition from East to West.

Joe Ross A new savory experience ... rebellious, bold & independent It is doubtful that any of us have been to the strange, unique city (Ortahisa, Turkey) that graces the cover of Mawwal’s second
album, “This is all there is, there is no other place.” Similarly, it is a new savory experience of the aural kind to hear
composer/arranger Jim Matus’ fusion of tunes from Afghanistan, Bulgaria, Kurdistan, Sudan, Pakistan, and other places hard to
describe. Besides singing, Matus plays the laouto, saz, and mandocello. The other members of Mawwal are Joe O’Brien (bass), Jill
O’Brien (vocals) and Mike Keyes (drums). Many guest musicians appear, with most of them contributing added percussion on djembe, riq,
tablas, djun djun, rattles, tama, cow bell, dumbeck, kenkene, frame drum, triangle, bells, box, and shakers. Of special note are
guests Jim Cole and Rohan Gregory. Cole’s harmonic singing imparts an eerie and meditative Zen-like feel to Matus’ original
“Mawwaltz,” sung with “scat syllables and meaningless sounds.” Then, at the next track, the title cut is sung in both English and
Aramaic. Gregory’s bow work is also a welcome complement on five of the eight tracks, although I would have equalized his violin with
more low end and reverb. Mawwal plays the New England club and festival circuit, and they’re also be heard at anti-war, anti-
imperialism, and pro-environment gatherings. After all, the band’s moniker comes from a type of improvisational Middle Eastern
popular music that often criticizes society. Thus, Mawwal’s messages have a subtle political bent, and their daring music also
displays something rebellious, bold and independent. It’s nice to see melodic creativity that incorporates elements of adventure,
excitement, challenge and danger. (Joe Ross, Joshua Tree, CA.)

ALBUM NOTES/LYRICS
1. Bloom Forest (Matus/Summer Is Icumen In, trad. arr. Matus) The title of this song came to me in a dream after a trip to the remote hills of Jamaica Bloom yellow, bloom red, Bloom fire, bloom bread. Bloom heaven, bloom hell, Bloom feather, bloom shell. Bloom ever, bloom now,Bloom thunder, bloom loud. Bloom water, bloom life,Bloom father, bloom wife. Bloom forest bloom, bloom for us. Bloom lizard, bloom fly,Bloom deeper, bloom high. Bloom story, bloom song. Bloom fury, bloom strong. Bloom honey, bloom blood, Bloom desert, bloom flood. Bloom iron, bloom rock, Bloom wonder, bloom shock. 12th century English folk song: Svmer is icumen in, Lhude sing cuccu! Growe? sed and blowe? med and spring? ?e wde nu, Sing cuccu! (Summer is coming, loudly sing cuckoo! Seed will grow, meadows will bloom, the woods will spring anew. Sing Cuckoo!)
2. Jajouka Between the Mountains (Bashir Attar, arr. Matus) This is a song I learned from Bashir Attar, the leader of the Moroccan group Master Musicians of Jakouka Awsalli alla Mohammed wana sali ma akoum, Aili Aili ou Jajouka bain legeball Translation:"Pray on Mohammed and I am going to pray with you." "Oh yes, yes, Jajouka between the mountains"
3. Fuu Duu/Voodoo Chile (Jimi Hendrix, arr. Matus) This song was arranged in the East African style and sung partly in English and partly in Arabic I stand up next to a mountain, chop it down with the edge of my hand. la'INnii TIFlu l-FUUduu, TIFlu l-FUUdu bilLAhi TIFlu l-FUUduu (I’m a Voodoo child, Lord knows I’m a Voodoo child) Well a mountain lion found me, And let me fly on a eagles back. aQUmu bi-JAnibi JAbalin (I stand up next to a mountain) wadamMIRuhu bi-HAFat yadii. (chop it down with the edge of my hand). My humming bird hums so loud, You think you’re losing your mind.
4. Sight Up/Vetettem Violat (trad. Hungarian. arr. Matus/additional lyrics Matus) The title and English lyrics in this song came to me in a dream Man is but a god, sight up. All in heaven be blind, ears to the ground (sung in Latvian on the bridge) I have sown violets (Moldavian folk song) translation: I have sown violets - as I await their bloom I await my sweetheart's return. The violet has bloomed and flowered, but my sweetheart never returned. My little chattering blackbird, pluck the sound of your voice, Bring forth your beautiful voice and sing to my heart a comforting song. I have neither made her sad, nor will I comfort her, The one who made her sad will also be the one to comfort her
5. I Mute The Burning River (Matus) The title and some of the lyrics in this song came to me in a dream Damned of all things, what good be a man? The moon will catch all he can do in a minute. In the hand of all Kings, what could be a plan is but measured reward and numbered untoward infinity. I dispute the final word, I mute the burning river. I salute the mind absurd, unclothed without a shiver. What volume of sea, what sum of great sky will hear my high wail on a steep creaving trail in a dream? In the ballroom of sleep, our gods free to lie, costumed we drink and dance out of sync to extreme. A STREAM THAT DON’T RUN - A RIVER THAT WON’T FLOW (sung in Latvian)
6. Happy On Your Feet Go (Matus) The title of this song came to me in a dream Taka Taka Teem Dharma Dharma Tao Tao Susaran bhadr ih ( Sanskrit: Good passage, happy here on Earth)
7. Early In The Morning (Matus) This song was originally intended as an absurd rewrite of the traditional “Drunken Sailor” but somehow became a serious heartfelt ballad What do you do when it’s late in the evening, early in the morning? In the sky the stars abound and the sun ain’t nowhere in sight And there’s darkness all around, and everyone wants to say goodnight, early in the morning And the moon is rising higher at the end of a long day And you’ve never been so tired, and you know it’s time to hit the hay, early in the morning CHORUS: (sung in Latvian) It’s not early anymore, all the daylight hours have slipped away, And it’s time to close the store, send all the late night stragglers on their way, early in the morning
8. Rag Yamen (trad. arr. Matus) (Traditional Hindustani love song) This is a song that I learned from master musician and teacher Stan Scott from Wesleyan U. when I took some traditional Indian vocal lessons

Oct. 25th 2011: the most interesting world fusion
One of the most interesting world fusion groups in the United States is Mawwal. -World Music Central
Oct 9th 2011: one of the best I have heard
Sight Up is a world fusion album and it is one of the best I have heard. And the best part for me at least, is the exceptional
melodies sprinkled over the entire album, like a layer of goodness just waiting to be absorbed. -Sea of Tranquility
Sept 14, 2011: a rewarding listen
Sight Up is an album that doesn't sound like much of anything else, a combination of sounds Eastern and Western held together by the
lyrical glue of Matus' visions. It's a disc full of accomplished musicians delivering sounds that channel a wide-ranging brand of
mysticism, and a rewarding listen. -Valley Advocate
February 14, 2009 : in Matus this all combines to a great totality
Whether its Middle Eastern percussion tribal rhythms from Africa or Klezmer influences in Matus this all combines to a great
totality. The end result is not western music with a folkloristic character but rather, here different beginnings are fused The
guitar may howl measures become oblique but finally the common rhythm according to which all people pulsate unites everything - progressive newsletter
October 01, 2008 : magically mesmerizing
Unconventional, fantastical and delightfully extravagant, Mawwal’s This Is All There Is There Is No Other Place is magically
mesmerizing - World Music Central
September 15, 2008 : rebellious, bold and independent
Mawwal’s messages have a subtle political bent, and their daring music also displays something rebellious, bold and independent. It’s
nice to see melodic creativity that incorporates elements of adventure, excitement, challenge and danger - Joe Ross/Independent reviewer
September 01, 2008 : Jill O’Brien’s haunting vocals soar
Taking the title from a passage by Terrence McKenna on transcendental revelation, Jim Matus (also of Paranoise) and company have
prepared a world-beat platter that is a big step forward from previous efforts, particularly regarding focus and execution of intent.
Concentrating on Middle Eastern and central Asian musics, Mawwal has practically created a neo-trad subgenre, a sort of ethno-
specific folk that utilizes authentic instruments (djembe, laouto, saz), but isn’t allergic to the occasional infectious occidental
rock groove. Jill O’Brien’s haunting vocals soar, whether supporting Matus’s chesty tenor or while soloing. Violinist Rohan Gregory
lays down a fiery solo on “Bela Sehida (Land of the Martyrs).” “Allah Hu (Only God)” features a furious Harshal Tole tabla cadenza,
and none other than Percy Jones delivers his trademark slippery fretless bass work on three cuts. By focusing on the music of war-
torn regions in the greater Near East, and that of stateless peoples from that same region, Mawwal -- as with most of Matus’s efforts
-- serves as a conscience for those privileged few whose status draws from the exploitation of the not-so-fortunate many - John Patrick/Progression
August 01, 2008 : I could listen to this over and over forever
All taken, this is an excellent second step; I could listen to this over and over forever! - Peter Thelen/Expose
July 15, 2008 : faultless laouto, saz and mandocello work
The songs are traditional of the Afghanistan, Pakistan regions and they have been arranged here by Jim Matus, creating a style that
pulses energy and radiates warmth and tranquility, forming the heart of the Mawwal sound. This core sound is driven by faultless
laouto, saz and mandocello work, accompanied by excellent tabla and violin mastery. The bass and drum work steers the fusion of East
and West, and the vocal only edges the compositions further into a cultural understanding. - Aural inovations
June 01, 2008 : Feed Your Head
From the first track, listening to Mawwal this is all there is there is no other place is like absorbing some bizarre hallucinogenic
compound through your armpits in a Waziristan sweat lodge. Drawing heavily on traditional Middle Eastern South Asian music and
academic icons like Joe Zawinul and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan the contemporary arrangement of these rooted in tradition pieces is well
seriously cool. Stringed-instrumentalist/vocalist and Mawwal mastermind Jim Matus has gathered a band of musically-possessed
individuals that includes deep, entrancing subsonic fretless bassist Joe OBrien, semi-tone vocalist Jill OBrien and violinist Rohan
Gregory. Percussion is provided (in the form of drums, tablas, djembes, dumbeks and many other instruments) by a host of schooled
professionals and world travelers including Harshal Tole, Mike Keyes, Shane Shanahan and the ever-present Tony Vacca. Mawwals old new fusion has overtones of Peter Gabriel or Paul Simon mining African and South American musical paradigms, though it
seems to incorporate mostly Pakistani and Afghani influences. There are elements of aboriginal chant as well; though there is nary a
didgeridoo on the record, there are droning, Tuvan throat-singing vocals that simulate the trance-like qualities of that instrument.
It is music that breathes, and quite palpably, like the walls of my dorm room did one day many years ago, in an isolated Vermont
boarding school. The whole seems heavily influenced by the psychedelic, in the intense, spiritual sense of the term. This is
evidenced not only by the CD cover art—photos of freak rock formations called "fairy chimneys," from the Cappadocia region of Turkey
—but also by their quoting Terrence McKenna on the CD insert. McKenna theorized worlds that were all but imperceptible without the
aid of psychedelics, and had some pretty smart stuff to say about it all: "Right here and now, one quanta away, there is a raging
universe of active intelligence that is transhuman and hyperdimensional. The true situation in which we are embedded is an organism,
an organization of active intelligence on a galactic scale." Mawwal have certainly captured this vibe, and if its one you like to
connect to, you will dig the hell out of these folks. - Tom Sturm/Valley Advocate
February 24, 2008 : Mawwal is the product of a firmly grounded vision
Mawwal is the product of a firmly grounded vision. Band mastermind Jim Matus weaves traditional lyrics from Bulgaria, Libya, Sufi
songs, and Malinke chants into lush rock arrangements. At the same time, he casts the music against a backdrop of radical political
dissent, and roots it in compassion, brotherhood, and anger”. / HARTFORD ADVOCATE - Dan Barry/ Hartford Advocate
January 01, 2008 : This was world fusion the way it should be done
I don’t know why I did not slide this one into the player the moment it arrived. Boom! Right off the bat it grabbed me with drums the
size of a continent massed vocals and a bit later electric guitar and bass. And that bass! The unmistakable sound sent me running for
the credits, yes, there it was: Percy jones. By the time the electric violin entered I was hooked. This was world fusion the way it
should be done. - Jon Davis/Expose
December 01, 2007 : nothing short of spectacular. a fascinating brew
For the first impression of Black Flies its hard to get beyond wow! For me this is what progressive music is all about. For my taste
this is album is just about perfect in every way. The compositions are intricate and engaging and the musical performances are
nothing short of spectacular. a fascinating brew. Bumping this album off my Best of 2007 list this year will be quite a feat. Black

August 20, 2007 : Percy Jones’s fretless growl
“Woven among Libyan folk melodies, Tuvan overtone “throat singing,” and Pakistani qawwali performances, Percy Jones’s fretless growl
buttresses this assembly of compositions and arrangements by sonic architect Jim Matus. Percy’s earthy tone and free-flowing phrasing
are exceptional throughout. Jones and the album’s other bassist, Tyler Van Ostrand, square off on Yurodivy, trading some the tastiest
bass licks in contemporary fusion”.
- Brian Fox/Bass Player magazine
August 01, 2007 : THE RESULTS ARE SPECTACULAR
If you have any familiarity at all with the explorations of Peter Gabriel into the music of other cultures, MAWWAL is what that could

Libya, Syria & Yemen are explored and then blown wide open with amazing arrangements by Jim that allow western perspectives to swim

"Inspired by musicians like Peter Gabriel, Karsh Kale, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Yousou N'Dour and Hamaza el Din, Mawwal takes world
music in an entirely new direction. The music manages to sound familiar yet new. Matus and his fellow musicians blend elements of
folk, jazz and groove rock with traditional indigenous sounds and textures. Inventive vocal arrangements in Arabic and English weave
through an ensemble of laouto (Greek lute), violin and traditional percussion on tabla, dumbec, frame drum and riq to creat music
unlike any you have heard before". - Sheryl Hunter (critic, The Recorder, Greenfield, MA)
January 05, 2004 : Mawwal is musically bedazzling.
"Mawwal is musically bedazzling. Jill O'Brien's angelic voice transcends language with emotion and takes you on a journey around the
world. Ken Matarazzo on percussion is smokin' and demonstrates that rare balance of skill, training and improvisational creativity.
Jim Matus, on loauto has a talent to draw magical melodies out of the air. He can weave a spell and put people into a trance. Joe
O'Brien's enjoyment of what he's doing shows in his smile as his bass fills out the sound. Playing music that touches us and makes us
get up and dance, Mawwal is truly music of the people. "

traditional melodies from around the world into an original and fascinating new genre of world‚ music - groove-oriented bass and
drums, the gorgeous harmonies of Jill O’Brien and Jim Matus, and stellar counterpoint of the Laouto (greek lute). It rings true to

Paranoise are the Deep Forest of heavy progressive rock. On eight of Private Power’s (1999) twelve tracks, the vocals are sampled
artists from third-world cultures. Paranoise have reharmonized and rearranged these for western ears, and of course added aggressive
rock timbres and rhythms. They also throw some ethnic instruments into the mix, creating one of the first progressive world rock
albums. The prog rock underlying it all stands on its own, solid and infectious, dominated by guitar and violin and owing a debt to
King Crimson. It’s the ever-present violin that elevates it from the ordinary to the extraordinary. All in all, a great idea that
works, and unlikely to sound quite like anything you’ve heard before.
Ishq (2001) perfects the style established on Private Power. This one is simply astounding, as the band take traditional songs from
Morocco, Afghanistan, Kenya, Bulgaria, and elsewhere and turn them into powerful progressive rock. In addition to the sampled vocals,
Paranoise add their own vocals, including an appearance by a Slavic singing group from Yale. Several guest musicians on various
percussion instruments shift some of the tracks into rhythmic overdrive. Even if you have no interest in “world music” per se, keep
in mind that Paranoise is to world music as progressive rock is to ordinary rock.
Paranoise is now Mawwal. Black Flies (2007) is a further development of Paranoise, not as heavy but just as energetic, and probably
more melodic. The ethnic percussion is stronger, but the major addition is the ensemble female vocals. Percy Jones (Brand X) plays
bass on most of the tracks. For fans of Peter Gabriel’s brand of world music, Mawwal should be the next step, as this is the most
advanced fusion of Middle Eastern and western progressive music we’ve heard.
Percy Jones also appears on several tracks on the second Mawwal CD This Is All There Is, There Is No Other Place (2008), which
continues the trend toward more acoustic timbres, ethnic percussion and vocals, at the expense of the rock side which was more
dominant in Paranoise. 17 musicians participate on Sight Up (2011), which continues in the same direction as the previous CD. Read

High Hills in the Creaving Road (2012) continues to advance Mawwal’s brand of world fusion. Percy Jones is again among the guests.
