Recorded live at the Blue Note Nov/Dec 1985 after Ray Brown prised Gene out of his comfy little retirement gig as music director for Idanha Hotel in Boise Idaho.

One of the finest live recordings in the Concord catalogue, the album features a superb Gene Harris playing at his very bluesy best & trading solos with tenor Stanley Turrentine who also turns in 1 of his best performances. With the magnificent killer versions of Misty, Things Ain’t What They Used To Be amongst others, this is a must have SACD.

Brief biog: One of the most accessible of all jazz pianists, Gene Harris’ soulful style (influenced by Oscar Peterson & containing the blues-iness of a Junior Mance) was immediately likable & predictably excellent. After playing in an Army band (1951-1954), he formed a trio with bassist Andy Simpkins & drummer Bill Dowdy which was, by 1956, known as the Three Sounds. The group was quite popular, & recorded regularly during 1956-1970 for Blue Note & Verve. Although the personnel changed & the music became more R&B-oriented in the early ’70s, Harris retained the Three Sounds name for his later Blue Note sets. He retired to Boise, ID, in 1977, & was largely forgotten when Ray Brown persuaded him to return to the spotlight in the early ’80s. Harris worked for a time with the Ray Brown Trio & led his own quartets in the years to follow, recording regularly for Concord & heading the Phillip Morris Superband on a few tours; 1998′s Tribute to Count Basie even earned a Grammy nomination. While awaiting a kidney transplant, he died on January 16, 2000, at the age of 66. ~ Scott Yanow

SA-CD.net review by sgb October 24, 2004: I have found the Groove Note releases to have consistently excellent sound, & this 1 is no exception. It is also 1 of their several releases that were licensed from Concord Jazz prior to that company”s decision to release Super Audio products on its own. As such, this recording in particular distinguishes itself from the many Concord SACD releases that have since followed in that it demonstrates just how important attention to detail is in producing a quality recording. This & the other Groove Note CJ releases are all superior to Concord’s own. The recording comes from live performances at the Blue Note in November & December of 1985. Harris is among a few excellent contemporary pianists who carry on the tradition of mid- 20th century trios; Stanley Turrentine, noted tenor sax great guests here, with the legendary Ray Brown backing these 2 giants. If you like this kind of music, you will love this recording. Highly recommended.

AudAud July-Aug. 2003 – Part 3 of 3 – Mostly Jazz review: The audiophile labels seem to be rediscovering the late Ray Brown since he’s gone. A great bassist like Brown is a perfect choice, since 1 of the myriad benefits of DSD technology is a more extended & solid deep bass portion of the frequency spectrum. The masters date from 1985, recorded live at NYC’s Blue Note by Concord Records. It is the successful reissue of several of Concord’s greatest albums on other labels which make more of their audiophile pretentions which finally convinced Concord to reissue their very own multichannel SACDs directly, which happened last month. Their 1st batch doesn’t include any already released by others, so though only stereo, this SACD is a winner. Harris’ style at the ivories starts with the boogie & blues of Albert Ammons & Pete Johnson, moves thru Oscar Peterson & hints at Erroll Garner’s sly humor. Turrrentine is a super-soulful saxist who supports Harris’ blues-based improvs to the utmost. ~ John Henry
