Нью-йоркская метал-бригада "Riot" была собрана в 1975 году по инициативе гитариста Марка Реале. Потратив пару лет на организационные вопросы и нарезку пробников, коллектив нашел издателя для своей первой пластинки – небольшой инди-лейбл "Fire Sign Records". Альбом записывался в составе Марк, Гай Сперанца (вокал), Эл Эй Куварис (гитара), Питер Бителли (ударные) и Джимми Айомми (бас) и сочетал в себе мелодику "Boston" и прямолинейную жесткость нарождающегося NWOBHM. Гастролируя по Восточному Побережью, "Riot" попали на заметку к более крупным фирмам, и после того как группа выпустила вторую пластинку на японском рынке, их приняла на борт "Capitol Records". Незадолго до начала сессий "Narita" Куварис уступил место роуди Рику Вентуре, но более заметны были изменения в саунде, ведь если в случае с дебютом команда рвалась к спид-металлу, то здесь отступила к буги-харду и даже сделала кавер на классику "Steppenwolf" "Born To Be Wild". Однако "кэпитолистам" и этого показалось мало, и лейбл начал нудить по поводу большей коммерциализации звука. Ну ж что ж, "бунтари" не зря носили такое название – они не желали играть под чью-либо диктовку и, когда давление слишком наросло, просто сбежали на "Elektra Records", где им дышалось свободнее. Между тем коллектив много выступал, открывая концерты таких исполнителей как Сэмми Хагар, "AC/DC", "Kiss", "Molly Hatchet", и в гастрольном пылу потерял ритм-секцию, заменив ее басистом Кипом Леммингом и ударником Сэнди Слэйвином. Обновленный состав записал альбом "Fire Down Under", который "Capitol" отказалась выпускать из-за чрезмерной тяжести и который стал для группы настоящим прорывом (многие до сих пор считают этот диск лучшим творением "Riot"). Находясь на пике творческого успеха, команда провела туры с "Saxon", Оззи Осборном и "Rush", как вдруг получила сильный удар – терзаемый религиозными сомнениями и к тому же захотевший оседлой жизни уволился Сперанца. Замена-то, конечно, ему нашлась, однако голос нового солиста Ретта Форрестера больше подходил под блюз, нежели под металл. После публикации заметно отличающегося по саунду от предшественников "Restless Breed" начались проблемы с "Elektra", и для следующего релиза "бунтарям" вновь пришлось обращаться к независимым компаниям. Несмотря на то, что посредине "Born In America" торчал кавер Клиффа Ричарда "Devil Woman", на данном альбоме группа попробовала вернуться к классическому металлу, и надо сказать что попытка ей удалась. К сожалению, неполадки с менеджментом и выпускающими фирмами резко остудили пыл музыкантов, и Реале вскоре прикрыл лавочку "Riot". Какое-то время Марк занимался другими проектами, но потом не выдержал и вернулся к старому имени, хотя и с абсолютно новым составом из Тони Мура на вокале, Дона Ван Ставерна на басу и молодым виртуозом-ударником Бобби Ярзомбеком за установкой. Камбэк-альбом "Thundersteel" окунул команду в пауэр-металл, однако домашний рынок как-то вяло отреагировал на эту работу. К счастью для "Riot", у них оставалось немало поклонников в Европе, а еще больше их чтили в Японии, поэтому и раскрутка альбома началась с островов. Когда группа отправилась на гастроли, стало ясно, что ей просто необходим второй гитарист, и на эту должность был приглашен Майк Флинц. Возврат в студию застал коллектив за экспериментами, и на "The Privilege Of Power" "бунтари" изобразили что-то вроде концептуального альбома с уклоном в прог-металл (местами в ход пошла духовая секция, а закрывающий инструментал был позаимствован у Эла Ди Меолы). Продолжая тусоваться в основном на Дальнем Востоке, "Riot" произвели парочку замен – сначала Ставерн уступил басуху Питу Перезу, а чуть позже у микрофона очутился Майк ДиМео. С программой "Nightbreaker" команда вернулась к прямолинейному металлу, но вместе с римейком "Outlaw" (с пластинки "Fire Down Under") и близкой к оригиналу пёпловской "Burn" на диске неожиданным образом оказался кавер "Procol Harum" "A Whiter Shade Of Pale". По выходу этого альбома у Ярзомбека нашлись дела поважнее "бунтарских", и он вручил свои палочки Джону Макалюсо. Тот, правда, отработал в студии всего один раз, после чего Бобби вернулся на свое место. Если "The Brethren Of The Long House" посвящался индейской теме, то альбом "Inishmore" базировался на кельтско-ирландской мифологии. В музыкальном же плане обе работы мало отличались друг от друга, и то тут, то там в них слышались отголоски "Rainbow" и раннего Мальмстина. Выход "Inishmore" сопровождался очередным визитом группы в Японию, а вернувшись домой, Реале собрал гастрольные записи, ремикшировал их и получившийся результат опубликовал под названием "Shine On". В 1999-м впервые за долгое время "Riot" отыграли серию концертов в Америке, однако оваций им так и не довелось услышать. Тем не менее, команда продолжала гнуть свою линию и не пожелала менять курс ни на "Sons Of Society", ни на записанном с Бобби Рондинелли "Through The Storm" (впрочем, в последнем случае включила в программу несколько выпадающий из тренда инструментальный битловский кавер "Here Comes The Sun"). Хотя 13-й студийник группа начала готовить еще в 2003-м, вышел он только в 2006-м. "Army Of One" был отмечен некоторым снижением темпа и появлением ударника из "Virgin Steele" Фрэнка Гилкриста. Последний, правда, сразу же исчез после очередного возвращения Ярзомбека, а вместе с Бобби вернулся и Дон Ван Ставерн. В 2011 году "Riot" напомнили о том, что они все еще в деле, причем на "Immortal Soul" музыканты сыграли так мощно и напористо, как давно уже не играли. К сожалению, данный альбом стал лебединой песней Марка Реале – в 2012-м лидер группы умер от осложнений, вызванных болезнью Крона. Однако, даже лишившись своего основателя, команда не сошла с дистанции и, подкорректировав состав (на вторую гитару Флинц привел своего ученика Ника Ли, а у микрофона очутился Тодд Майкл Холл) и название ("Riot V"), в 2014 году вернулась с увесистой порцией пауэр-металла "Unleash The Fire".
