With Bus Stop Serenade , Brian Lynch opened a series of albums that bring together all of his compositional work, created over the course of his forty-year career and distributed in numerous recordings. The compositions gathered on Bus Stop Serenade were originally composed by Lynch between the mid-1990s and the following decade. A few years ago, the trumpeter founded his own label ( Hollistic MusicWorks ) and began reinterpreting older compositions. Lynch worked with two longtime musical partners, saxophonist Jim Snidero and pianist Orrin Evans , on this first album in the series, as well as the bassistBoris Kozlov and drummer Donald Edwards . [1]
"I'm very attached to all of the tunes I've written over the years," Lynch explained in a press release, "and often felt that they would benefit from a little attention in the form of new versions they came up with for contemporary listeners who may not be familiar with my earlier work." [2]
In addition to the compact version with the selected versions, the double album also contains a second CD with the alternative takes. Recording took place at Red Rock Studio near Delaware's Water Gap, home to the area's legendary jazz club , the Deer Head Inn , where they had their dress rehearsal the night before.
According to Angelo Leonardi, who reviewed the album in the Italian edition of All About Jazz , hard bop aesthetes will probably like to compare the different versions of the tracks, but ultimately it's a matter of subtlety: freshness and passion are expressed on the two CDs of the albums are bursting with sensitive personal interventions as well as with a strong melodic character. This is hard bop in excellent performance, fresh and exuberant, respecting the established models of jazz tradition without completely committing to them. [1]
Morgan Enos wrote in JazzTimes that Lynch was an undisputed, understated master of the trumpet. The material here is consistently excellent. If you can't get enough straight-ahead jazz , this is a generous helping of some of his biggest current artists in the subgenre. Together, the quintet swings wonderfully around the trumpeter, and his band "machine" is oiled with strong camaraderie and expertise.
