The Beautiful South возникли на обломках распавшихся Housemartins - в противовес своему прежнему «нордическому» имиджу, лидер группы Хитон дал ей саркастической название The Beautiful South. К вокалисту и барабанщику присоединились бывший роуди Housemartins Дэвид Стед, а также Брайана Корригэн из Anthill Runaways и несколько других начинающих музыкантов.
Воспользовавшись старыми связями, Хитон добился для группы контракта с фирмой Go! Критики приняли поп-рок-группы неоднозначно, однако весной 1990 года сингл «A Little Time» с этого альбома возглавил национальный хит-парад. Видеоклип мрачноватого дуэта Корригэн и Хеммингуэя в 1991 году удостоился высшей премии BRIT как «лучшее музыкальное видео года». Тексты The Beautiful South - их пишут Хитон и Ротерэй - ироничны и в ряде случаев имеют социальную направленность, чисто любовной лирики в репертуаре группы практически нет, что для поп-коллектива несколько странно. Диковатые тексты Хитона, чей подход к темам религии, секса, политики, алкоголизма и прочей бытовухи поражали воображение обывателя, сильно выбивались из общей музыкальной идиллии, хотя впоследствии они и стали основной «фишкой» этой группы.
Имел успех и сингл «Old Red Eyes Is Back» - это своего рода сага о последних днях горького пьяницы; поклонники группы имели возможность лишний раз убедиться в незаурядном поэтическом даровании Хитона. Огромной популярностью пользовался сборник «Carry Up The Charts — The The Beautiful South», остававшийся в хит-параде Великобритании почти год: пластинка, вышедшая в 1994, достигла первой строчки альбомного чарта, оставалась там до конца 1994 и весь 1995, став самым быстро распродаваемым британским альбомом года. Тираж диска составил только в Великобритании 3 млн. экземпляров.
Пик популярности коллектива пришелся на середину 1990-х, когда два его альбома – «Blue Is The Colour» и «Quench» один за другим возглавили официальный британский чарт.
Альбом «Painting It Red» стал третьим альбомом группы, занявшим первую строчку британского чарта, однако его коммерческий успех был ниже, чем у предыдущих альбомов The Beautiful South.
Распалась команда в 2007 года, продав и выпустив за свою историю свыше 15 000 000 пластинок. Официальная шуточная причина — «излишняя музыкальная схожесть».
В марте 2009 было объявлено о воссоединении The Beautiful South – в половинном составе и без своего фронтмена Пола Хитона. Состав The New The Beautiful South включил в себя вокалистов Дэвида Хэмингуя и Элисон Уиллер, а также барабанщика Дэвида Стида. Двое их бывших коллег – гитарист Дэвид Ротэрери и басист Шон Уэлш – отказались принимать участие в реюнионе. Равно как Пол Хитон, ныне выступающий в роли сольного исполнителя.

This is an uncirculated recording of what was sadly the last ever New York City show by TBS. The crowd was enthusiastic and the band responded by pulling out an energetic performance filled with classics and a few new tracks from Superbi. All in all it was a fantastic show and a fitting farewell. The recording is (in my opinion) excellent and a very enjoyable listening experience. I'd say it's easily the best audience tape of the 2006 tour. The mix at Irving Plaza was also commendable with nice strong vocal presence and well-balanced instrumentation.
