With the DJ mix series "Connecting The Dots", which starts today, we want to offer you exactly that - in addition to the musical pleasure that goes with it: something to look forward to with regularity, something that connects us with each other and gives a little order and cohesion to the confusing everyday life. And all this with the gentle weapons of music.
With "Connecting The Dots" we focus musically entirely on the rich catalogue of our in-house labels. We allow the invited DJs to descend into our treasure chambers in order to tell their very own story about KOMPAKT using the material captured there.
In contrast to the countless DJ mixes that are freely available everywhere on the net, we have set ourselves a new standard with "Connecting The Dots". Robag Wruhme – a man who needs little introduction as he is one of our most recognised members of the Kompakt family. His story with the label began as a half of the now legendary Wighnomy Bros..Their 2004 release WURZ + BLOSSE (KOM EX 19 / SPEICHER 19) was the pivotal single in defining a renegade techno approach that continues to aspire the series today.
The solo career of Robag Wruhme is as illustrious and courageous as it gets for being an electronic musician and DJ. Through a long series of EP releases on Musilk Krause that includes the defining 2004 album “WUZZELBUD KK” through to becoming a core member of DJ Koze’s Pampa Records family with two full length albums and EP’s, his connection to Kompakt has never faltered with a stream of EP releases including last year’s lockdown hit “Calma Calma” (KOM EX 115 / SPEICHER 115).
As one of our favourite DJ’s, it was a complete no-brainer to ask Robag Wruhme to be the second to contribute to our CONNECTING THE DOTS series. He delivered a mix that is beyond expectations and true to form with his style, showcasing the extensive knowledge of our catalogue in the best of ways. Through layering up to 4 tracks at the same time covering literally the course of our label’s long history, Connecting The Dots features the likes of Michael Mayer, Jörg Burger, GusGus, Closer Musik plus even a cameo from German actor, Kai Schuman.
CONNECTING THE DOTS is our new monthly DJ Mix series that invites our favourite DJs to have access to our 15k + track catalogue of the Kompakt family of labels and tell their own interpretation of our musical history. Beyond that, we see this as our way to voice the need for artists' music used in DJ mixes should be paid for their tracks being used – and we challenge others to bring to streaming platforms more mixes as an alternative away from the constant tsunami of free / illegal DJ mixes online.

The third edition of CONNECTING THE DOTS comes from one of Kompakt‘s most inner circle and a purveyor of the Sound Of Cologne, Tobias Thomas. He remains a treasure to the Cologne music community, perhaps most notably as the host and resident of the now legendary Total Confusion club nights (1998-2014). His emotive DJ sets were the main ingredient in the parties enchanting elixir, an ever changing concoction of styles and sounds that would bring people together from Cologne and all over the world. As a producer, he was a member of the formulative techno-boy-band Forever Sweet (together with Reinhard Voigt and Michael Mayer) and can be found regularly on our TOTAL series collaborating with Michael Mayer as Thomas/Mayer. Tobias Thomas takes a classic approach to telling his story of Kompakt, and expertly navigates the mix through 19 moments in the label's history. He starts with the deep space vacuum of Marcus Schmickler’s “Particle/Matter” (2019 – KOM 407) to very early days of Pop Ambient with Marcus Guentner’s “In Moll 6” (2001 – KOM 042), Gregor Schwellenbach’s piano interpretation of Kaito’s “Everlasting” (2013 – KOM 275) and “Fearsome Jewel 5” by Andrew Thomas (2003 - KOM 086). With Sascha Funke’s remix of the Superpitcher classic "Rabbits In A Hurry" (2010 - KOM D 009), Tobias then opens the treasure chest from which he tells his very personal interpretation of the label's "golden age" - an era that could perhaps be interpreted as Kompakt's most romantic period. Over the next 70 minutes, he weaves a string of pearls from DJ Koze's bonus mix of "Bobby" (2006 - KOM 136) to SCSI-9's "Mini" (2004 - KOM 101), Steadycam's "In The Moog For Love" (2007 - K2 25) to the blissful swoon of Jimmi Moon's "Lovelane" (2000 - KOM 020) and tops it off with an almost forgotten summer anthem like Michael Mayer's remix of Baxendale's "I Built This City" (2005 - KOM POP 8).
The last track is by none other than Superpitcher, one of Tobias’ closest friends and the uncrowned master of melancholic techno who makes 3 appearances in this mix. His haunting ballad “Holiday Hearts” (2010 – KOM 222) is a more than fitting last caress by a masterful storyteller.
CONNECTING THE DOTS is our new monthly DJ Mix series that invites our favourite DJs to have access to our 15k + track catalogue of the Kompakt family of labels and tell their own interpretation of our musical history. Beyond that, we see this as our way to voice the need for artists' music used in DJ mixes should be paid for their tracks being used – and we challenge others to bring to streaming platforms more mixes as an alternative away from the constant tsunami of free / illegal DJ mixes online.

With Cologne-based DJ and producer Jonathan Kaspar, an artist who only began to engage more intensively with the label's sound in the late noughties is dedicating himself to the Kompakt archives. This distinguishes him and his perspective on music history quite clearly from First Generation veterans such as Tobias Thomas or Robag Wruhme, who have been involved in the triumphant advance of the label, but also that of a certain sound, whose "Connecting The Dots" mixes have this majestic aura and the slightly precocious knowledge of absolute masters of their trade, in which every beat, every hissing hi-hat is loaded with mountains of history.
In that sense, Jonathan Kaspar was boarding the train half way when he first discovered Kompakt in 2007. He therefore connects entirely different dots than his predecessors and that leads to extremely exciting, unforeseen and novel results. An example of this is the fantastic musical arc he spans roughly between tracks 6 and 15, the prime time of his mix, so to speak. With the intuition of a star chef, Jonathan conjures up a complexly composed menu of two old Supermayer pop techno classics and the timeless borderline funk of Schaeben & Voss feat. Schad Privat, the überhit "Conjure Superstar" by Maceo Plex and finally tracks by artists such as WhoMadeWho, GusGus and Terranova, whose formative contribution to the Kompakt sound of the decade is hereby once again expressly acknowledged.
What amazes throughout the entire length of the mix and not least wherever one has been lucky enough to experience Jonathan live - for example in his beloved Gewölbe Club in Cologne - is his unbelievable precision, in terms of craftsmanship as well as the timing of his transitions and the dramaturgical order of the individual tracks. If his handwriting just reminded you of that of a good chef, at the same time you always have the feeling of listening to a highly talented surgeon at work, if you know what I mean. A small example of this too, straight from the beginning of "Connecting The Dots 4": Into the floating of Closer Musik's "One Two Three (No Gravity)" Kaspar cuts the beat of Superpitcher's "Moon Fever" remix of Gluteus Maximus into it like with a sharp scalpel. But it's not a cold, technocratic precision that guides his hand in the process. It is done with all warmth and care, with love and respect for the material. The first cut is always the deepest. For a long time he holds the tension between the two tracks until, stitch by stitch, he has sewn them together so tightly that they become one in the mind. The art of the DJ doesn't get much better than this.
Finally, with Terranova's "I Want To Go Out," Jonathan brings up his own wistfulness, the great longing to return to the nightlife. His mix for Kompakt is, not least because of this, a great homage to club culture. At the end of a long night, Jonathan brings us safely home with some rarely heard gems from John Tejada, COMA, Jatoma, Echo Club and finally ambient luminaries Ulf Lohmann and Andrew Thomas. The first rays of sunlight already bathe Hans-Böckler-Platz in a delicate, pinkish light. We'll be back, no question about it.

Alex Paterson should need no introduction but let’s give you a short one anyhow. A pioneering force in the early days of UK ambient / rave techno, he is most famed for establishing The Orb – one of the first breakthrough electronic acts we all know and love. KOMPAKT was fortunate to work closely with an incarnation of The Orb that was Thomas Fehlmann and Alex Paterson, releasing multiple albums and EPs up to their disbanding in 2017. The Orb continues on, and our friendship with Alex (and Thomas) remains strong. His regular program on London’s WNBC is a regular listen in the office and he’s lovingly played many KOMPAKT releases on the show…to invite him to do a CONNECTING THE DOTS mix was the most obvious one.
The result on his CONNECTING THE DOTS is an illuminating, out of this world DJ mix that finds focus on the world of our expansive Pop Ambient catalogue but also leans towards the more fringe elements of the techno output from the label. From mainstay inclusions of music from GAS and Michael Mayer to lost gems such as the shoegazish bliss of Sam Willis’ and Alessio Natalizia’s Walls project and the hum of Slowdive’s Simon Scott “Für Betty”, Alex Paterson’s skills as a DJ is riveting from start to end and certainly shows there is no sign of him wavering as one of electronic music’s greatest storytellers.

The idea of experiencing a DJ set by Denis Stockhausen from a distance, with that spatial distance that has long been an unquestioned standard at many festivals and other major events in the electronic dance music circus, is completely absurd. Meter-high stages, aristocratic DJ booths made of steel and concrete, crowd fences below and VIPs in selfie frenzy above - these are not places where man nor DJ Denis Stockhausen will ever feel at home. His natural habitat is the club, that small, cramped, hot space full of bodies that don't crave distance, but closeness. For whom the mixture of high volume, high temperature and sensory overload is the elixir of life – those who need the opposite of distance and hygiene: Intimacy and dirt.
With this passionate appeal, which doesn't want to fit at all into the current time, Denis Stockhausen opens his Connecting The Dots mix, which he of course recorded in his beloved Gewölbe Club in his adopted hometown Cologne. Such a mix is usually recorded, if not at home anyway, in the concentrated solitude of an empty club, yet in this case in particular it is a sad notion that Denis was not surrounded by dancers whose physical closeness, reaction and emotion constantly nourishes and drives his particular way of DJing in a way that people only do together in the dark of night: Wenn Du wissen willst, was mich berührt (If you want to know what touches me).
Denis Stockhausen, heart, soul and emotional volcano always on the verge of eruption, epicenter made man of what KOMPAKT as a company and place holds together in its innermost, was and is animated by an enthusiasm and love for this music like hardly anyone else. His artistic expression is characterized by a genuineness, a directness and an almost naïve, childlike emotionality, just as it is simultaneously borne by great knowledge, love, passion and blind mastery of the DJ craft. With his unwavering faith, Denis moves mountains. The professional coldness and commercial calculation that has always dominated the DJ vanity market are the exact opposite of what he does. Eisen, mein Herz.
There is no need to bother with boring track titles and name dropping to find out it’s all there in his Connecting The Dots mix. To loosely describe it after another KOMPAKT hit: It's Sex With Denis Stockhausen. A big wild horny party, tender and hard at the same time, with which Denis celebrates the musical memories, moments and people that have shaped the last almost 30 years of Kompakt for him. All of it means the world to him. Finally, between the lines, this mix tells his very personal stories from one thousand and one nights, in which Denis threw his heart on the dance floors all over the world, brutally open, naked, with one big gesture: Happiness.
