CELEBRATING 37 years of making music, The Vibrators have recorded their 17th studio album and entitled it On The Guest List.
And it’s a pretty apt title, as there is a stellar array of guests all lending a hand –or plectrum – or vocal chord.
The band’s line-up these days does include two original members in singer / guitarist Ian ‘Knox’ Carnochan and drummer Eddie.
Also in the band is bassist Pete (just Pete), but the original bassist Pat Collier has co-produced the album with the rest of the band.
The 16-track set includes 15 tracks written by Knox and one co-written by him and Nigel Bennett (who also features on the album).
Three tracks: Automatic Lover, Baby Baby and Whips and Furs are actually re-recordings of classic Vibrators’ songs and the rest are brand new.
As previously mentioned, the band has invited a few special guests to join them in the recording of this album.
Hugh Cornwell (ex-Stranglers) adds vocals and guitar to Rain To Town, and this has special meaning as The Vibrators’ debut gig was supporting The Stranglers in 1976.
Brian James (The Damned) joins in with Every Dog and Nicky Garratt (UK Subs) lends his expertise to The Ohio.
The band’s first producer, guitar legend Chris Spedding makes an appearance in 2nd Skin.
Other guests include Wayne Kramer (MC5) and Leonard Graves Phillips & Stan Lee from The Dickies.
The energy that comes from this album will astound many and they all play as if it was 1976 again – but with a lot more panache.
Bassist Pete has this to say.
“Making the album has been an exciting experience.”
“We recorded our parts in London and sent the tracks to the US where guest artists recorded their parts without any input from us.”
“To collaborate this way is risky because we can have different views on how the songs should sound from an artist who adds their parts to our song.”
“But hearing the album, we are happy with the finished songs. Well done to all out guests.”
