Another great progressive debut EP, this would probably be most comparable to the Queensryche EP, good, but where's the rest of it? I definitely believe this is too short. Very solidly written songs and another very well produced Jim Morris album.
Leviathan's sound can best be placed some where between Dream Theater, Fates Warning and Queensryche, they probably come off as a healthy mix of all three. The singer is clean and melodic vocals, very easy to listen to, generally midranged. The songs on this release don't quite have the progressive flair at all times, but you can definitely hear parts come through in different songs.
"Degenerating Paradise" and "Beast Of Burden" has some nice straight double bass patterns with some cool snare grooves overtop of them. "Two Roads To Nowhere" is a bit of a ballad, pretty cool. "Leviathan" is a nice epic feeling ending, after which I'm sorry to say the albums ends.
Short but good.

This album is simply amazing, its like a two guitar Dream Theater mixed with Pantera. The musicianship, production and songwriting all take big leaps from the debut (which wasn't bad). Overall I would describe this disc as progressive groove, its certainly more progressive than the debut, often incorporating more time signatures.
The drums make sure the album kicks through out, he adds some really great grooves through out. The guitars are heavy and hypnotic, most of the songs become quite catchy on this disc after a couple listens, its progressive enough though so the listener doesn't get bored with them after repeated listens. They do seem to have minor mastabatory parts in a couple of songs, but I find them strangely hypnotic too, they just seem to go off for brief periods of time.
"Confidance Not Arrogance" kicks off with a nice heavy groove and is one of the faster songs on the album too, and probably adequately prepares you for what you're going to hear for the rest of the album. "Sanctuary" has a slow intro and an addictive chorus. "The Calling" is yet another strong tune. The next two songs kind of go together, some recurring themes are found, "Not Always Lost" is very hypnotic. "Falling Snow" and "Run Forever" are both good tracks. "Disenchanted Dreams" is probably one of my all time favorite songs, it has a great pick up before the chorus and some other great moments through out, I won't mention the catchyness either. "Speed Kills" is another cool song, pretty straight foward except the solo section.
I highly recommend this disc to those that appreciate progressiveness and still have those thrash infested brain cells like me.

Leviathan is a progressive metal band formed in Colorado in 1989 by guitarist/leader Ronnie Skeen, guitarist Steve Fugate, and vocalist Tom Braden; the original lineup was completed by drummer Ty Tammeus and bassist James Escobedo. Just before the group recorded its self-titled debut EP in 1991, Fugate left the group to be replaced by John Lutzow. Leviathan recorded its full-length debut in 1993 with new vocalist Jack Aragon; Deepest Secrets Beneath became a minor hit overseas, particularly in Japan. However, the group nearly fell apart afterwards; Skeen and Lutzow saw the remainder of the group defect, and moved to plug the holes with vocalist Jeff Ward, bassist Derek Blake, and drummer Trevor Helfer. This lineup recorded Riddles, Questions, Poetry, and Outrage in 1996. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

This is another quite unique CD by this band, its at about the same level as their previous release, although I'd say more experimental as a whole, and like its predecesor it is quirky and rather uncomparable, and sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. It gets quite heavy at times, and mellow at others, and down right wacky at others. Overall I'd say it has a dark vibe although they guitar tones and use of keys are experimented quite a bit and sound completely out there and original, which sometimes comes off as brilliant and others might be more comparable to fingernails on a blackboard. On the whole I'd say it hits more than misses. The band also use more sound samples thoughout the album, a few of the clips I've recognized from different movies. A lot of the shorter tracks almost bridge this together like a concept album, which to me seems revolve around some soul searching theme. This is actually quite a progressive work (their most), too bad these guys don't get more attention.
"Salvation" has a techno/industrial styled bass line, but some very cool guitar parts fill in over it, its really interesting. "Friends Imaginary" is a decent tune, interesting in a variety of ways. "Paying the Toll" is one of the more rocking tunes on the album. "The Door" has some interesting mixing of heavy and light timbres. "If these Walls Could Talk" is a deeper tune concerning the issue of abortion. "All Sins Returned" is the heaviest tune on the album, and just rocks, the lyrical theme deals with our selfishness coming back to haunt us. "The Last King of the Highlands" is another strong song, fairly heavy and at the end has a bit of celtic flavor strike in. "Born Unto ..." has a very boring drowning first 4 minutes of acoustics and then picks up into something interesting, though rather light. This just sounds like something an alterna band would do. "Leftist Out" sounds more like they were in left field when they wrote this, this song is just odd, I can't even describe it. "Turning Up Broken" is a pretty good tune, mid tempo, mildly heavy, fairly progressive feeling. "Apologies Wanting to Make Good" is a pretty cool tune, it serves as a good intro to "Legacy Departing" which is a great ballad and has a hypnotic flute part in the background.
Definitely recommend for those that like top notch musicianship and innovative song writing.

After having lost track on this album a few years ago, this is the first time I listen to it again and I am floored to recognize all the melodies that have hit me back in the day it was released in 1994. Great, playful, yet melody driven progressive powermetal is what you get here. The technical approach is certainly a point where many power metal fanatics might stop and turn away but if you take one step further you will find an enchanting soundscape full of rich harmonies, great charismatic vocals and songs that are heavy and sophisticated. A shame that this one had to get lost for such a long time to really appeal to me, as I was not very fond of this playful prog metal back in the day due to the one or another reason.
Anyway, sometimes you wake up late and listening to this with the distance of 16 years, I can say this is certainly as great as everything big names as FATES WARNING, DREAM THEATER, QUEENSRYCHE and acts like that have unleashed in the previous years and it is, despite the general direction into playful and technical song structures, a unique and fairly enchanting piece of music. You will never get rid of these melodies, just as it happens to me in this moment.
As a bonus you will find the 1993 demo, which I still keep as a sacred gem in my collection in its original cassette format. This is a little bit more melodic, still draws influences from the neoprog scene of the 80s but you can already hear in what direction this band would move later on. What sweet memories come up. Well, if you loved KINGSBANE lately, you will certainly get hot on this one. The 90s were, after all, not such a bad time for sophisticated heavy metal music.

Colorado based Leviathan was one of the great prog metal bands of the 90s, recording for Century Media as well as their own label. This set featuers a DVD and companion CD of their reunion show filmed in Brighton, CO on 1/7/10. I forgot what a great band they were. If you dig melodic prog metal with stellar musicianship and vocals you can't go wrong.
The CD contains over 60 minutes of live concert audio from all four critically acclaimed albums. The DVD contains 80 minutes of live concert, behind-the-scenes and unreleased material.

Yes, it is true. The 6th album from the gifted Colorado Progsters is a reality and when I threw a quick glance at the album's credit, I was surprised that Ronnie Skeen wasn't credited as a member or a composer! John Lutzow is now the man behind the compositions, while John Sellers accompanies him in the guitar parts.
So, after this significant change, I was extremely curious to listen to the new stuff. After several spins, the listener can realize that Leviathan are meant to be always unique. The new album is an ideal soundtrack for the cold, rainy winter days and nights.
Sounds that touch the inner self, while the vocal lines are tenderly fit with the melodies, the new CD from the band really contributes a wonderful sample of a genre that remains artistic and free of boundaries. Songs like "Vanity Might Protect", "Acapello Gold", "Forsaken, Forgotten For Nothing" and "Memorized Fairytales" are so emotionally intense and wonderfully structured that satisfy the demanding listener. I would also suggest to pay attention to the solos of the song "Forsaken..." since the strong melodies are a wonderful, dreamy experience!
I also enjoyed the heavier moments of the album, such as the song "Third Rail To The Third World" which begins with an intelligent riff, while the lyrics are pretty inspiring and "politically-active". The opening track,"Blue Screen Of Death - THC EMP Part I" is also another highlight, with the sing-a-long chorus and the majestic riff to prove that Leviathan are present again.
The new Leviathan CD includes also a superb instrumental entitled "Acapello Gold" which is definitely one the band's most wonderful compositions! I really cannot hide my enthusiasm when I witness bands recording strong instrumental and not just another "filler" for their album. Well done guys!
I am pretty sure that the new CD, "At Long Last, Progress Stopped To Follow" will satisfy the fans of the band and will also attract new ones.

End of status report
Colorado's Leviathan has more than a little cult status in the world of progressive metal. Formed in 1989, the band had an ambitious start, label status, yet eventually succumbed in 1998. But, it appears you can keep a good band down. Leviathan revived several years later, did a reunion show producing a live CD and DVD, and recorded their first new album in some 15 years. Now, the band returns another four years later with Beholden To Nothing, Braver Since Then.
Leviathan - Beholden To Nothing, Braver Since Then Photo
Leviathan: in the forest.
One of the curious, and entertaining, things about the band is their odd album and song titles, like Ephemeral Cathexis, Solitude Begets Ignorance, Magical Pills Provided, Misanthrope Exhumed for example. Lacking the lyrics, and the weakness of the vocals, much is left to the imagination as to what the songs are about. We do know from the album page on the band's website that, conceptually, the album has something to do with religion. I don't think guitarist and lyricist John Lutzow likes it/them.
Otherwise, as usual, Lutzow and Leviathan create some rather creative and entertaining progressive metal, and there's a lot of it in 15 songs clocking in around 75 minutes. To say that Leviathan is unusually unique in their sound or approach is not necessary. The arrangements can be technical, but are not necessarily so. It's easy to follow along, finding the varied parts of song nicely intriguing yet blissfully enriching the whole. Good examples include Creatures of Habit and If the Devil Doesn't Exist, the latter offering mostly playful guitar work.
But that's seems to be the centerpiece of Beholden To Nothing, Braver Since Then, after all, Lutzow composed all the songs. Magical Pills Provided and Thumbing Your Nose at Those Who Oppose are only two examples, of many, where he shapes the entire song with electric and acoustic interpretations. The former song, to these ears, has the almost 70's psychedelic thread, mixed with jazz fusion, wrapped in progressive rock. Both songs are also examples of how Leviathan adds spoken word part throughout. Yo must turn up the volume to catch what's being said. Despite the fuzzy ambiguity of the album's theme, I'm sure the have some meaning within each song. My suggestion is to simply enjoy the music. Leviathan's Beholden To Nothing, Braver Since Then is ambitious, creative, and dramatically unpretentious progressive metal, while nearly epic in scope. Hopefully, Lutzow and company didn't completely drain the tank with this album, so we'll have more in the future. Easily recommended.

Take FATES WARNING in the short period of time when John Arch had left the band, Ray Alder had joined them and they were developing their epic metal towards a more technical, progressive metal. Take PSYCHOTIC WALTZ and strip them down, free them from their acidelic elements. Combined, you'd get something that could sound similar to the first real album by Colorado progressive metal heroes LEVIATHAN.
