"A British documentary once erroneously described Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, as the ‘murder capital of the world’, not for its homicide rate per se (the city has one of the lowest crime rates in Australia), but because of its inordinate number of foul and bizarre killings despite its relatively small population. In Australia, interstate rivalry also sees the rest of the country dismissing Adelaide as a small-minded backwater teeming with bogans (loosely the Antipodean answer to chavs and rednecks, for our Northern Hemisphere friends). People like to sneer at Adelaide—except for the wine regions. Everyone likes the wine regions.
I was born in Melbourne, Victoria, but have grown up in Adelaide. Mark Groves was born in Adelaide but has spent most of his adult life in Melbourne. Like the steady stream of others who’ve moved from Adelaide to the Eastern coast, I suspect that Groves has a love/hate relationship with Adelaide. But it’s clearly the starting point for his excellent (and now sadly defunct) Von Einem project. Specifically, Bevan Spencer Von Einem is a notorious scumbag currently serving a life sentence for the torture and murder of a local television newsreader’s fifteen-year-old son in 1984, and is commonly considered a member of a (likely fabled) group of high-society pervs, ‘The Family’.
There are plenty of folks taking true crime as the starting point for noise and power electronics, but Groves’ take on matters is a far cry from the projects that wallow mindlessly in the violence. Instead, this is more a psychological study of human degeneracy and the environments that breed it. Like the 2011 film Snowtown, based on the infamous ‘bodies in barrels’ series of murders in and around Adelaide, the music here is often sedate and rarely features outright violence. Indeed, the Snowtown killings make perfect fodder for the project: they could have happened anywhere, and are shocking precisely because they had such banal, familial roots.
There are bursts of brutality here, to be sure, but most tracks opt instead for cold, suburban dread and a dispassionate, almost journalistic analysis of events. While Von Einem peddles very different thematic material and is delivered with less ferocity, it’s an approach not dissimilar to that employed by Dead Boomers, the superb power electronics project Groves shares with Leith Thomas. Together, the two also run Sabbatical Records.
The Von Einem Tapes is a double-CD release that brings together the project’s entire cassette discography of its four-year existence. I have the tapes, but never appreciated—until now—just how focused Groves had been across the albums. Released on some of Australia’s strongest tape labels (Mazurka Editions, Altered States Tapes, Cantankerous Records, Future Archaic, Solar Anus, Virulent Rationality), they included three split releases. Methods at work are common enough, but deployed with a freshness and conviction often lacking in similar material: tape loops, synth splutter, shaker box, morose drum machine rhythm, and heavily processed vocals. Collected together on the one double-CD, the tracks make easy bedfellows, and clearly a good deal of thought has gone into progression.
Tape and amp hiss tie them together, while Grove’s sinister baritone recites the deadened lyrics. Unlike the original tapes, the lyrics are also reproduced in full here, at times displaying noxious poeticism:
