01. Mors Syphilitica is a Gothic rock/Ethereal band formed in 1995 in New York City by Lisa Hammer (née Houle) and Eric Hammer after the breakup of Requiem in White. Their music combines often-surreal lyrics with unusual instruments such as the mandolin and banjo, as well more conventional instruments such as the guitar. Lisa's operatic vocals give Mors Syphilitica's music a distinctive powerful, sweeping quality. On record, all of the instruments were played by Eric; while live, they were accompanied by live drum and bass players.
Their first EP, which was released on Sacrum Torch, had a very limited release of 300 copies, and proved a great success. Their subsequent recordings were distributed at first by Sacrum Torch, then were picked up by Projekt Records for their last album, which gave Mors Syphilitica access to a much wider audience.
The band did not conduct many interviews, preferring that their music would speak for itself rather than warrant explanation.

02. The history of NY's Mors Syphilitica dates back to the goth scene of the mid-80's. Guitarist Eric Hammer and vocalist Lisa Houle first played together in Requiem in White, whose mix of dark, swirling sounds and operatic vocals won them a huge following. After moving to the Big Apple from Boston, they played shows with nationally known bands like Biohazard and Type O Negative. Eric and Lisa, now married and sharing the same surname, formed Mors Syphilitica {two years ago}. Unlike other bands who rely on pre-programmed backing tracks, the group includes a live rhythm section, which helps them stand out among their peers. Lisa's vocal range can hit high C or dip into the bottom range. Not only does she have the pipes, but she knows how to use them creatively. The end result has drawn comparisons to Switchblade Symphony or Dead Can Dance, but Mors Syphilitica has their own thing going.

I think considering this band as the middle point between Christian Death and Dead Can Dance would be really too limiting. There aren’t simply gothic influences, but also black metal, classical opera, middle ages influences and atmospheres (try to imagine what would happen if the songs “Below the Baleful Star” or “The Woman Who Believed” if they were sung by a death metal singer!!!!) Eric Hammer’s guitar style is surely unique and I’m sure he has nothing in common with the bands above just as Lisa has nothing in common with all the usual gothic singers. Of course that’s gothic; that is what I think gothic is, different from new wave, dark, cold wave, post-punk, etc!
