What could be better than hitting upon a winning formula which strikes such a chord with an underground unconscious that your band acquires the much sought after "cult status" tag, which means, to musicians everywhere, that you've made it; not only are you hip, but you are hip without having even considered entering into the mainstream?
Why, letting another band do all the aforementioned groundwork for you of course, then simply waiting for that group to disband and picking up the pieces by mimicking their sound almost as if you were acting as some kind of shamanic familiar for their tortured souls; tortured of course because the original trailblazing group would be turning in their graves if they found out that their legacy was being trampled all over.
June of 44 sound like Slint. I didn't want to have to say it, I was desperately striving to write a review that was above all nit-picking and comparisons, and based completely on an objective appraisal of the music, but it just couldn't be done; I kept thinking of all the other trailblazers throughout history that had influenced other bands to be thoughtless mimics. Today's music industry is full of copy cat outfits such as Nickelback, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Coldplay and U2 (the latter at one point were themselves trailblazers) amongst others who casually tune in to FM radio stations and, liking what they hear, realising that there's an easy buck to be made, pen a similar tune that is so devoid of true emotion, feeling or insight that it may as well have "instant chart hit" branded on it's cheap rough hide.
In many ways, June of 44 are the first 'sell-outs' of the so called post rock movement. They no doubt stumbled across Slint, were impressed, shocked even, that such an original noise hadn't found it's way to their virginal ears sooner, and discovering to their delight that Slint had ceased to exist decided that this new sound would be their new sound. To try and find a little more commercial success they seem to have injected slightly more rock'n'roll into proceedings, but the effect of this is largely unredeeming as the sudden metallic riffing is too much in contrast with the broody and alien world that Slint inspired the group to create.
The race to be original is a tough run one, with no respect being lavished upon those who come in in second place, and no amount of "cryptic" lyrics are ever going to smooth over that fact. And in all honesty, June of 44's lyrics are sometimes a tad laughable; can I get a "PORT STARBOARD" anyone? No, what about an "INHALE.........EXHALE?"
