Review At some point or another someone at this party started talking about the “renaissance of rock and roll” that we are currently experiencing. My first thought was: “Wow, what a great party—a bunch of rock critics.” Shouldn’t we be talking about Debbie Gibson’s naked butt being plastered about the Internet? Let’s keep these discussions puerile and naughty. Renaissance of rock and roll? Please. Then this guy, who was clearly going out of his way to antagonize me, starts reeling off reasons why loud bluesy guitars, thick chunky riffage and the general worship of the guitar as a phallic extension is currently not only in vogue but saving rock music from itself: “White Stripes Strokes The Black Keys The Hives Von Bondies…” The worst part was that people were starting to listen to him. They actually were starting to nod their heads and murmur agreement. I did what I had to do to save the party. “Look, why don’t you take all those bands and just tell them to drop their pants and get a ruler, ok? Just go ahead and have them measure their guitars. Just cut to the chase, ok? They borrow what they can’t create, rehash what has already been done better, cloak their cool as shit snarl in a shroud of everything that’s already been done successfully in the hope that no one will notice. Their whole attitude is just a reworking of the canonical rock and roll attitude that Elvis Presley, Led Zeppelin, the Stones, Jim Morrison, all perfected to such a pelvis thrusting, faint inducing, weird sex in hotels ‘T’.” Then I went for my ace in the hole, my trump card to shut up Mr. Rock n’ Roll renaissance and get the party back on track. “It’s the chicks that make rock music interesting. The Slits, Sleater-Kinney, Joan Jett, The Donnas, L7, shit the fucking Bangles! Rocking out without a cock, that’s attitude. Sticking your nose into the old boys game, that’s attitude. Being loud, good, and butting your head against a bunch of denim jacket wearing stoner boys, that’s your renaissance. Pouring your heart into a song, but still having every guy in the room staring at your tits, that’s attitude. ” I think the whole party had started staring at me at that point. But really, wasn’t that kind of my plan the whole time? So dude says, “You don’t know what you’re talking about.” More often than not this is true, especially after an evening when I’ve spent enough time with the king of beers to be informally welcomed as a member of the royal family, but luck was on my side. I’d been listening to The Heartless Bastards’ Stairs And Elevators obsessively for the last week. The Heartless Bastards are a hard rocking three piece fronted by 27 year old Erika Wennerstrom. Hailing from Dayton, dropping out of high school, moving to Cincinnati, and generally paying her dues the way any self respecting songwriter would, she and her two band mates have created an album with more rocking songs and fat hooks than most bands can dream of. It’s not just that they rock, it’s that you believe what you hear, that they love the sound they make, that Wennerstrom lays her soul bare in her lyrics without sounding like Sarah McLachlan, that the women of rock who labored to make it OK for a girl to dream of playing guitar deserve far better than Avril Lavigne or Kelly Osbourne as their descendants. Songs like “Gray,” “Runnin,” or “Autonomy” will stand up to any of the music being hailed as a “renaissance of rock.” This is pedal to the metal, bang your head rock, and there’s a woman at the front of this train wreck flailing her vocal cords to tatters with a rough-hewn beauty hard-earned. Frankly, I don’t know if I convinced anyone of anything at that party. But then again, they hadn’t heard Stairs And Elevators and I had. ~ Peter Funk

Review All This Time, the Heartless Bastards' sophomore album, begins with a gentle and determined piano line, a melody by no means delicate but genuinely hopeful when it hits those higher notes. Such a subtle start is a little unexpected after the full-on blues-rock assault of their debut, Stairs & Elevators. But you know what those Heartless Bastards do to that little piano part on "Into the Open"? Erika Wennerstrom's guitar starts churning, drummer Kevin Vaughn chomps his teeth, and Mike Lamping's bass sneaks up on it and they devour it whole. Why? ‘Cause they're a rock band and that's what rock bands do. And when they belch it back out for the second verse, that little melody has changed considerably, becoming more fuel for the engine that powers the band along. Like that digested piano theme, the Bastards have changed considerably since Stairs introduced the band's unpretentious Midwestern blues-rock and Wennerstrom's much-ballyhooed vocals. They still sound heavy enough to level a small city, but they've refined their sonic tonnage to make it tighter and more agile, able to move more quickly even as they incorporate new styles into the mix. With its marching pace, swirling vocals, and cut-loose chorus, "Finding Solutions" sounds soupily psychedelic, like heyday Jefferson Airplane, and "Brazen" fiercely lives up to its title. Best of all, the band actually pull off some quiet moments, like the cooing "I Swallowed a Dragonfly" and the closing "Came a Long Way". At the center of this maelstrom stands Wennerstrom, who plays a capably muddy blues guitar but commands more attention for her enormous vocals. Perfectly suited for the Bastards' brand of bar rock, her voice is a distinctive and forceful instrument, howling through these songs like a tornado through a trailer park. Furthermore, the gale force of her delivery makes her lyrics sound truly conflicted as she balances self-loathing with self-assurance. On the title track, her declaration of loyalty and affection sounds all the more convincing for being so forcefully stated, and on "Blue Day" you can hear the desperation in her voice when she sings "I get no motivation/ Need some inspiration/ Try to get motivation/to help me get through this day." Wennerstrom's voice, however, is both a blessing and a curse. Its power demands bold accompaniment, which Lamping and Vaughn are more than capable of providing, but because she doesn't have a tremendous amount of range, the band can't move with much agility or dynamic. For the most part, they've worked around this handicap on All This Time, hitting the big notes with scary ease and sounding bruised and tender on quieter sections—usually within the same song. But there's not much in between these extremes-- no building up or quelling down, just relentless horizontal jamming. As a result, they hit the same emotional notes in every song. Those notes may be distinctive to the band, but the Heartless Bastards nevertheless sound like giants tied to the earth. ~Stephen M. Deusner

Review Since 2005, Heartless Bastards have been writing traditional blues-rock that they record in a simple and more or less lo-fi manner, which means they bleed authenticity from both ends. So the cleaner and more carefully arranged sound of their latest album, The Mountain, is a new step for them. From the opening title track, it sounds like a confident one. A muffled guitar introduces the simple minor-key progression, but then the whole band kicks in, stretching the sound from pan-and-scan to widescreen, while a soaring electric slide guitar adds to the song's understated majesty. Producer Mike McCarthy has done a fine job of making the band sound clean without being antiseptic, but the focus is very much on the dirty guitars and the voice of frontwoman Erika Wennerstrom. Her voice is distinctive, powerful, and exudes an easy lived-in authority; it's the kind of voice any band playing this kind of straightforward rock would die to have fronting them. Heartless Bastards seem like their trying to grow and diversify without losing sight of themselves or their sound-- a tricky undertaking since they've made it thus far on bare-bones rock. But even with the added touches, The Mountain still a pretty austere affair. The most ostentatious moments are the record's softer ones. "Wide Awake" is one example, with its reserved strum augmented by mandolins, a martial drumbeat, and Wennerstrom singing an ambitious, vaguely Eastern-sounding vocal melody (Led Zeppelin III seems seems like the band's North star on how to add depth). "Early in the Morning" and "Out at Sea" are more typical plugged-in mid-tempo stompers, the latter having a few overdubs and incidental noise that slyly suggest a psychedelic touch. "Nothing Seems the Same" is that song's simmering cousin, gradually building and receding without ever bursting through, with some of the same production touches. If anything drags The Mountain down, it's tempo. The title track is immediately deflated by the acoustic campfire strum of the following "Could Be So Happy", though the simple ascending chorus promises that it'll linger in listeners' minds once it's over. . "Hold Your Head High", however, is maudlin world-weary, little-help-from-my-friends tripe that even Wennerstrom's voice, hammering every brassy high note within reach, can't save. "So Quiet" is another folky detour, with a string chart that screams starched collars in comparison to the band's blue ones, and they follow that right up with "Had to Go", more acoustic fun with added banjo and fiddle. Compared with the record's earlier slow songs, "Had to Go"'s languid tempo seems purposeful and patient, with Wennerstrom in total control of the melody-- but most arresting is the open space that they've allowed into the song. The last two songs signal a return to volume and normalcy, but while closing track "Sway" is a perky step sideways from the record's somber tone, "Witchypoo" is not nearly sublime enough to sustain its sluggish pace. With The Mountain, Heartless Bastards have shown that they have the tools and the talent to take at least tentative steps forward into a more ambitious and diverse sound. But it's surprising that they sound so introspective here when they could, and occasionally do, sound world-beating. ~ Jason Crock
Доп. информация:
The Band History Heartless Bastards, formed in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2003, is a garage rock band. They are often compared to fellow Ohioans and Fat Possum labelmates The Black Keys. Heartless Bastards originally formed as a four piece band with members Erika Wennerstrom on vocals, piano and guitar, Dave Colvin on drums, Adam McAllister on bass and Michael Weinel on lead guitar. They played their first live show at The Comet, a bar in the Cincinnati community of Northside, in August 2003. After parting ways with Colvin, McAllister and Weinel, the group reformed as a three piece with Kevin Vaughn on drums and Mike Lamping on bass. The band was signed to Fat Possum Records in 2004 after Patrick Carney from The Black Keys passed along a demo he received from Erika. The 5-song demo was recorded in December 2002 at Ultrasuede Studios by Shannon McGee and featured Colvin on drums, along with contributions from Reuben Glaser on lead guitar and Jesse Ebaugh on bass. Rolling Stone reviewed their debut album Stairs and Elevators and said, "the Heartless Bastards are a small-town band who are ready to show the big city no mercy".[1] The Village Voice wrote: "deadeye accurate in pitch and message... what we've got is a hard, gnarled voice singing simple-seeming melodies that feel archetypal rather than ordinary, which is no easier to explain than it is to do". Stylus gave the group high praise, stating, "(Erika Wennerstrom) and her two band mates have created an album with more rocking songs and fat hooks than most bands can dream of. It’s not just that they rock, it’s that you believe what you hear, that they love the sound they make, that Wennerstrom lays her soul bare in her lyrics without sounding like Sarah McLachlan, that the women of rock who labored to make it OK for a girl to dream of playing guitar deserve far better than Avril Lavigne or Kelly Osbourne as their descendants."[2] The second full-length album from the band, All This Time, was released on August 8, 2006. The band road tested many of the tracks on the record prior to releasing it and received rave reviews from audiences. The album relies less on guitar riffs and belted vocals and more on musicianship, without leaving behind the group's unique sound. On the modern rock station WOXY, the band was ranked #12 on the 97 Best of 2005, putting the band among the likes of Spoon and ahead of blues rockers The White Stripes. [3] According to Wennerstrom, the name of the band comes from a question on a Mega Touch trivia quiz game at a bar. A question asked the name of Tom Petty's backing band, and one of the options was "Tom Petty and the Heartless Bastards." She thought it was funny, and used it when she later formed a band.[4][5] In August 2008, a new lineup for the band was announced. Erika Wennerstrom remains the only constant member, rejoined by bassist Jesse Ebaugh and original Heartless Bastards drummer Dave Colvin. Their third album The Mountain was released February 3rd, 2009 on Fat Possum Records and was produced by Spoon producer Mike McCarthy. For this album the band broadened their sound to include elements of country music, employing violin, banjo, mandolin and steel guitar.[6] The Heartless Bastards performed a taping for the popular PBS series Austin City Limits on June 3, 2009 as part of the show's 35th anniversary season.[7] Currently, the Heartless Bastards are opening for Wolfmother, during the band's American tour.
