From the inception of file sharing the debate of its morality has been spawned on countless message boards, talk shows, and courtrooms. Even the hallowed halls of the TSB forum where users are almost all in harmony over a certain reviewer’s sexual orientation and the supremacy of ‘post-rock’ have fallen victim to quarrel over torrents and FTP (check it out). Fortunately, a number of quality Net Labels have arisen lately and temporarily diffused said argument by releasing music free for all to download. While this phenomenon is still hampered by the concept of “TINSTAFL” and some cannot understand why any respecting musician would give away their music rather than have it downloaded illegally, French Teen Idol is here to quell the naysayer and disprove economic theory.
Enlightened False Consciousness, the second offering from Italian solo artist Andrea Di Carlo, is a mature, lush compilation of post-rock, electronic beats, and sound samples. Eliciting comparisons to M83 and the Album Leaf, FTI shows its musical ability by gleaning from these sounds but never mimicking, creating a familiar yet distinctly different sound. While the electro-beats and melodic lines are both intricate and beautiful, Di Carlo prefers to place the synthesizer’s chord progression at the forefront of the mix, allowing both upbeat and slow paced songs to maintain the delicate ambiance that defines FTI’s sound.
Perhaps the best track of the album is the fourth song “Departure” which melds the ever-present enveloping synthesizer with sound samples from the ATC tapes of United flight 93. This at first seemed to be a misstep for the Italian artist. However, an overdriven guitar swells and the drumbeat soon arrives to create a somber intensity that is fully respectful of the tragic events. The title track continues in the same vein, where a simple driving guitar repeats with a fragile piano arpeggio mesmerizes.
Despite FTI’s insistence of false consciousness, it appears that they subtly are aware of their output. The sound sample on “Compromise Your (He)Art” aptly quotes Ayn Rand “When the common good of a society is regarded as something apart from and superior to the individual good of its members it means that the good of some men takes precedence over the good of others.”Enlightened False Consciousness is beneficial for both the individual listener and the whole of Internet music pirates, and therefore gives one no excuse to not download the album.
