Transmutant – Katie Noonan’s sixth independent album – the title of which actually means ‘change’ is her most personal storytelling and possibly most ambitious creation to date.
“Yes, change is the key word”, muses Katie. “There have been so many changes in the past five years – and it’s taken five years to produce this album,” she explains.
I am speaking to two weeks prior to the launch of her newest album. Financed entirely through PledgeMusic, a crowd funding platform, Katie has not just created a timeless album, but she has led by example: how do you put power back into hands of fans? Answer: PledgeMusic. In fact, so involved were Katie’s pledgers, they were part of the backing vocals on some of the songs including In The Name Of The Father (feat. Jordan White).
“The winners came to be a ‘fly on the wall’ at the Sing Sing studios in Melbourne and had some mentoring sessions. It was truly an exciting way to make an album.”
Pledges for the album came in fast – no dallying for Katie’s fans. “ We reached our target in 48 hours, and then within two months we had 180% of the original target…so we used the additional funding on the film clip of the track Vanguard.”
The video clip to Vanguard is mesmerizing. A black and white masterpiece of song and dance intertwining. “The video was filmed with the Sydney Dance Company and has the most beautiful choreography…. Charmaine Yap the lead dancer has some videos on Youtube, she is amazing.”
“After several different projects, this album feels like a return to me. This is the first truly ‘Katie’ album with all new material in a long time. The songs reflect my journey over the past few years exploring the emotional tapestry of this modern world through beauty, sadness, gratitude, loss, love, joy, admiration, connection, disconnection and many things in-between. All in all, I’m really proud of these songs and so excited to be able to share them with you.”
Listening to the entire album on repeat before I speak to Katie is something of a ‘pinch myself’ moment. Katie’s floating, soaring vocals are other-worldly. Katie’s voice is divine and if you have never heard it, you’re missing out. Studying at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, she initially trained as an opera singer (as her mother is also famed for) before falling in love with jazz. Those influences combined with Katie’s passion for music have resulted in one of Australia’s finest artists.
“Opera was my first love, although I started writing my own music and loved the complete and absolute freedom there… Then I realised, you can do anything with Jazz and that was exciting for me.”
Katie grew up around music. Her mother Maggie Noonan has been famous for decades as one of Australia’s best-loved sopranos and in 2009 the pair released an album of jazz and operatic duets entitled Two of a Kind.
After graduating from the Conservatorium, Katie fronted the pop-rock group George, along with her brother Tyrone Noonan. Festival Mushroom Records released the debut album Polyserena in 2002 which debuted at number one one the ARIA charts.
The lyrics you’ll hear on Transmutant – a lot like Katie, are real, humble and gracious. For example the lyrics in The Name of the Father – do make you question: what’s important in this world? Through all of Katie’s work there is palpable connection with the audience and her band members. “We never go on stage without a meditation and a cuddle with the band. It’s really important to connect.”
Unwaveringly humble, Katie talks with gratitude about the talented collaborators she has worked with over the years. Transmutant came to fruition with the help of Cameron Deyell, Stu Hunter and Declan Kelly (The Captains), Zac Hurren and Stephen Magnusson (Elixir), Bree Van Reyk (Synergy, Sally Seltman), Manu Delago (Bjork), The Gossamer String Quartet, Jordan White (Playwrite), singer-songwriter Jack Carty, revered bassists Ben Robertson and Jasper Leak, child soprano prodigy Miuro Lauritz and renowned French horn played Robert Shirley, who all feature on the album.
During the first two minutes of our conversation as we utter “so great to talk to you… excited about the album…so many great tracks…” and after that Katie apologizes for being late (quite unnecessary, I assure her – as I was simply enjoying listening to her album more) as she was driving with the kids and the dog is rustling distantly in the background. I ask Katie about juggling motherhood, plus international music career – singing, and producing, plus raising funds for women’s causes…How does she manage it all?
“I have to say we scheduled the album to coincide with school holidays. I create my music, and block out chunks of time around that now. My mother was a working mum and singer – on the fridge door she’d always have the lyrics of the arias she was rehearsing. So I suppose, I grew up respecting the making of art and creating music. It helped to shape my approach to this industry.”
“Also my partner is supportive and is not threatened by me going about this work, he’s fine for me to be the breadwinner. We’ve been together a long time and he understands” Katie is married to Isaac Hurren, her longtime partner and collaborator in a jazz trio: Elixir. Elixir’s second album First Seed Ripening was eleased in 2011 and that year won the Best Jazz Album.
“Dexter and Jonah (Katie’s two children) came down the Melbourne studio (Sing Sing) and they loved it! It was quite cool they were helping to make a behind-the-scenes video while we were there, filming lo-fi. Jonah, Dexter and Saffie was the studio dog. My kids have been around the world, wherever the music takes me.”
As I leave my conversation with Katie Noonan, wrapping up with thank yous, and me adding an admittedly lame: “Look, if i don’t get the chance to say so in future, I want to thank you for such amazing lyrics …and umm…for being a role model for other women to stay true to their own style”… (cue: post conversational cringe!)… it occurs to me that she is a modern day ambassador and voice for switched on women who are forging creative businesses their own way. I feel she gives a voice to women who are embracing their own positive change.
Katie also says she is looking forward to getting back to the Gold Coast. “ I love this whole area. I’ve done shows at the Soundlounge before and that was a lovely experience. I’m looking forward to coming back.”
