#777If minimalist punk group Flipper had incorporated the excesses of Pere Ubu, then created a hybrid of the Cramps' Lux Interior and the Make Up' s Ian Svenonius to sing vocals, this Old Time Relijun album would be the result. Vocalist/guitarist Arrington De Dionyso explores the guitar's fretboard in every non-standard method possible, whether it's detuning and retuning during the middle of a song ("Telephone Call"), sounding like an uncontrollable factory machine ("Giant Boat"), or picking the guitar strings near the bridge to create piano-like noises ("Broken Water"). Along with drummer Phil Elvrum and bassist Aaron Hartman, the band destroys any preconceived notions of what rock is supposed to be. They take a metallic, simplistic, and chaotic approach, where instruments sound as if they're melting (the bass at the end of "Johnny Appleseed") or dying (the bass clarinet in "Broken Water"). The group even manages to explore free-form noise ("Hot Oven") that puts the Stooges' "L.A. Blues" to shame. The album would be an all-around success in noise rock if not for a two-and-a-half-minute Jew's harp solo ("Khomuz") and a drawn-out acoustic guitar/vocal ditty ("Office Building"). Fans of no-wave punk, or experimental renegades like Captain Beefheart, should take note of this record.

Now here are twenty five minutes of music worth saying a big goddamn over. In the old time style of hick comedy not unsimilar to The Cramps or Circle Jerks, with a completely rod-twisting sinisterism of The Birthday Party, Old Time Relijun have captured a most titilating sound of backwood angst and fury. No sloppy copying or tributing, OTR is probably the most original sounding bit of work heard since the genre of horror movie style swamp music was culled into Rock-N-Roll. Slap your knee and grab your sister, ready yourself for a musical trip to an uglier world of marshy secret snake handling and speaking in tongues. And speaking of tongue ties, Old Time Relijun has modified three of their tracks, originally released on Uterus And Fire in1999. The songs are reworked into Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, ostensibly to celebrate their trek into Europe, but perhaps because these languages of "love" translate well the emotions of passionate hate and disgust and degredation that are themelike on La Sirena de Pecera This world ain't no pretty place, and this comes off in any language unmistakable, clear and to the point. Rhythm, bass and striptease percussion fall apart into Jazz on crank and vocals from somewhere else. Everything is out of tune and twisted and perfectly wrong. Arrington de Dionyso's voice is...is... well, it is showcased perhaps best on "Moon". I think he spits. Somewhere there is a descriptive medium-um...squeaky hinges, Gibby Haynes, demons from Hell? Maybe? He tries a little acapella on "Caught at the Door". Mr.Cave might call up soon. And as if Arrington's voice and that lethal rhythm aren't enough to send you off your rails, he also lends breath to some of them most merciless wind I've ever heard.(meaning the bass clarinet...) Aaron Hartman with upright bass and Phil Elvrum doing percussion are more than great accompaniment it must be said. My advice: Lock up your kittens.

It's a fine line that separates the ragged stomp and swagger of Old Time Relijun and the borderline blackface routine of Jon Spencer and his Blues-ploitation, but it's an important one. Rather than rely or clichés, milking them for comedic effect or just for a strutting, self-congratulatory wank-off, Old Time Relijun takes the blues and twists it into a contorted, freakish figure similar to the way Captair Beefheart's early Magic Band did, complete with lyrics that seem pulled out of a peyote-eater's dream journal. Old Time Relijun revolves around Olympia-based songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Arrington de Dionyso. The band started as a one-man deal, but over time de Dionyso recruited other Olympians to help his cause. For some time now, Old Time Relijun's drummer has been Phil Elvrum from the Microphones (lo-fi indie rock's great white hope). He also recorded Witchcraft Rebellion, and it features a few of his by-now-expected marks of idiosyncratic brilliance, though he mostly keeps the twists and turns to a minimum, relying instead on a trebly, tense sound. As his name would seem to suggest, Dionyso sings like some drunker ecstatic lunatic when he's not doing his best Beefheart imitation. At his strangest and most compelling, he sounds like a Mongoliar throat-singing Popeye. Needless to say, it's one of those voices you're going to either love or hate immediately-- I happened to love it. As for his lyrics, here's a good sample from the disc-opening "Mystery Language": "I can take off my head and so can my dad/ In the grocery store it falls on the floor..." You get the idea-- even the band's name is cribbed from Beefheart (Mr. Van Vliet's refrain or "Moonlight on Vermont"). Yet Old Time Relijun have clearly developed their eccentricities to such a high degree that they distinguish themselves beyond mere imitators. Those with the aural endurance to make it through Witchcraft Rebellion's early sonic assaults will discover hints of dub, Motown, post-punk angularity, and hipster-jive poetry strewn throughout the album. "Cuneform" starts out like classic Beefheartian chang-ba, but ends sounding like a vintage Nick Cave rant-- uh, if Cave had ever ranted about archaeology. Elsewhere, "Mercury Snake" is a dirty slow jam coupled with the strangled blasts of a sax trying to turn itself inside out, and "King of Nothing" sounds like Sebadoh as fronted by the aforementioned spinach-eatin' sailor man. The problem with most modern bands who take a lot of their cues from Beefheart is that they almost always ignore the wild sense of humor present in a lot of his music, focusing instead on Beefheart's more serious, conceptual, and high-minded aspects. I'm mainly thinking of U.S. Maple here, and they serve as a good foil to Old Time Relijun ir terms of bands heavily influenced by the good Captain. Old Time Relijun takes Beefheart's more playful elements and runs, synthesizing them with a shambling melange of clatter and junkyard funk. When I saw Old Time Relijun at Tonic a few months ago, guitarist and vocalist Arrington de Dionyso wore no beard to obscure his baby face. Without his ragged mountain-man facade, de Dionyso's distinctive voice lacked its familiar context; instead of an unhinged woodsman chopping demons, a bespeckled indie-rock geek spat possessed tongues, hillbilly ire, and the gurgling howl of a vampiric Jon Spencer. To confuse things further, this end-times preacher was swaddled in a red sweatsuit emblazoned with "Oriental is the world famous country" and accompanied by a picture of Italy. I really love these disjunctions: Ted Bundy didn't resemble a killer, pre-makeover Clay Aiken was an unlikely pop star, I can't believe it's not butter. As I saw it that night, this figure somehow swallowed a maniacal banshee who flooded the club with its angry presence whenever this sorcerer opened his mouth. Perhaps due in part to my confused expectations, Old Time Relijun was unstoppable that night-- an endless well of Beefheart goodness. "Cold Water", from Lost Light, was especially propulsive, constructed with an extended build-up and an eventual shout-along of the song's title by new double bassist Aaron Hartman and drummer Rives Elliot (the latter replacing The Microphones' Phil Elvrum) before de Dionyso ended the set with an extended jaw harp solo. There are no jaw harp or solo excursions on Old Time Relijun's fifth album-- it's all about teamwork (well, that and storytelling). An intense 30 minutes, Lost Light features the band's catchiest, most filled-out songs to date-- a sure-footed treat after the unevenness of 2003's rarities collection, Varieties of Religious Experience, whose lack of narrative pull was its primary weakness; as if Old Time Relijun are responding Roxanne-style to my prodding, Lost Light is a goddamn concept album. At first glance, Lost Light's song cycle seems to document an estrangement from innocence (or Eden). Complicating this otherwise easy read is an Olympic-sized pool of water imagery-- amniotic fluid, rivers, rain-- as well as an endless quest, oral sex as ablution, Blakean naturalism, the gnashing of teeth, and addictive poison (I'm thinking Bel Biv DeVoe). Upon closer inspection-- and with the help of "Dark of the Male, Light of the Female" from 2001's Witchcraft Rebellion for imagistic explanation-- it's more about old-fashioned love. That's an interpretation that's backed by de Dionyso himself, who told me via e-mail: "My songs use the language of alchemy and dreams to find new (and ancient) ways of talking about love-- the entire process of having, losing, finding, rejecting, coming to terms with, being in love. Lost Light tells the classic story of the Shaman's Soul Retrieval." Amidst that dense tale, Old Time Relijun twist and shake the three-minute pop song. Banged together with Thinking Fellers Union Local #282's angular and unhinged guitarissimo, album opener "The Door I Came Through Has Been Closed (But I Keep Trying)" mutates as it swivels, swings, and saves. It also announces de Dionyso's Proclaimers-like intentions: "I walk the streets of the city/ I walk alone in the city/ I keep trying to/ Find you." The previously mentioned, "Cold Water" is a swift eight minutes: De Dionyso tracks a vision quest, water, and himself through trees, roots, mud, rock, soil and sand. The instrumental "Music of the Spheres" chimes with the confusion of a flood-zone and "Cold Water, Deep Underwater" is a chill-out sans vocals with wrangler gee-tar and precisely constant water torture drumming. "The Rising Water, The Blinding Light"-- with lines such as, "Devil and the angels making eyes at each other/ They wanna be inside of each other"-- feels like Flannery O'Connor damnation as sexual come-on, a crazed monological call-and-response of dizzying spells invoking Nick Cave. The album even ends with a reference to rock's most-famous lovers, John and Yoko, via the "put down your sword" of the joyful "War Is Over". Critics mention a musician's parent's occupation when it adds to or helps create a mythology. With that shop secret in mind, de Dionyso was raised in Arkansas and Spokane, WA as the son of Methodist ministers. And Lost Light is his most confident, explosive sermon. When a band this manic attempts concision while still working within its raging form, the ideal result is a super-tight documentation of howling at the moon. Lost Light has that swagger. As the poem inside the album suggests ("I'm the kind of king that likes the night/ Ashes and dust are my glittering crown/ I found my queen/ I go down/ For my underground queen"), this is a cracked, art-rock Odyssey, a collection of warped hillbilly booty jams for folks who've misplaced something and want like hell to find it. — Brandon Stosuy, April 18, 2004

Every fifteen seconds in America, Mississippi Delta and hill country blues are co-opted, mimicked, or re-invented by a bunch of white people with thrift-store guitars: Mercifully, Old Time Relijun, Olympia, Washington's mostly-bearded noise-blues quartet, have dismantled the form so thoroughly and recklessly that Catharsis in Crisis, their seventh LP, is less an homage than a passing nod. The record may steal bits and pieces from classic American idioms, but their clamor is all their own. Old Time Relijun have been recording for more than a decade, first forming in 1992 and signing to Calvin Johnson's K Records in 1995; since then, they've contributed to several compilations, released six albums and issued a mess of 7" singles. Mostly, OTR serves as a vehicle for frontman Arrington de Dionyso's bizarre avant-blues dirges: Members drift in and out (past drummers include the Microphones' Phil Elvrum and Jamie Peterson of Deerhoof side project the Curtains), but de Dionyso keeps writing confounding stompers and then recruiting his pals to help slam them out (the current lineup includes Aaron Hartman on upright bass, Ben Hartman on saxophone, and Germaine Bacca on drums). Produced by Steve Fisk, Catharsis in Crisis is the third and final installment in the band's self-proclaimed Lost Light Trilogy (preceded by 2004's Lost Light and 2005's 2012), and arguably their finest effort to date. Scads of critics have already pointed out how, as a vocalist, de Dionyso seems to be deliberately channeling a less snickery Captain Beefheart (not a particularly shocking comparison, seeing as the band snatched its name from a Beefheart lyric)-- his pipes are scratchy and wild, spastic and loud, beguiling and gross. If you were to unfold the album's liner notes with hopes of clarifying some of the narratives shooting out of de Dionyso's piehole, you'd be treated, instead, to a series of six original line drawings of half-animal, half-human critters engaged in varied earthly pursuits. The fake-out is sort of appropriate: Old Time Relijun's narratives are based more in noise than language. The instrumental "Garden of Pomegranates", with its dark, garage-rock rhythms and freewheeling sax blows, is disorienting and intense; likewise, "Dark Matter" feels well-suited to the kinds of ominous highway drives that find you falling asleep at the wheel, head bobbing, car careening, body going limp. Vocals pop up about a minute before the song ends, and de Dionyso (the son of Methodist ministers) sounds more like a priest speaking in tongues than the leader of a Pacific Northwest indie band. "Circular Ruins" is based on a short story by Argentine poet and writer Jorge Luis Borges, wherein a wizard attempts to create a young boy by dreaming him into existence; at the end of the story, the wizard realizes that he, too, is the result of another's person's dreaming. Over wonky guitar and taut drums, de Dionyso re-tells the wizard's story: "Night after night," de Dionyso warbles, voice popping, while his guitar shivers and squeaks. It's one of the record's most thrilling moments, throbbing and desperate. Old Time Relijun aren't especially listener-friendly, but it's worth battling through the all scum to get to the little glowing gems underneath: Catharsis in Crisis is a complex, fully-realized collection of songs. — Amanda Petrusich, October 19, 2007
