All tracks recorded in late winter, 2000 at Acme Recording, Chicago by Jeremy Lemos except 7 recorded largely at Elliotsound, Chicago by Elliot Dicks. Mixed by Jim O'Rourke at Acme with some mixing on 1,4 by Jeremy Lemos and on 7 ("New Bird" dance mix) by AZ.
Track 4 is not listed in the booklet, but seems to be a rough rehearsal recording of track 5 ("Pools of Mercury").

Azita has finally returned from the seclusion of her own self-imposed exile... and from the molten ashes of the Scissor Girls, she and new bandmates J Graff, MV Carbon & J Kienzler have emerged from the lab as a lovely, 4-headed apparition: Bride of No No.
Atavistic 2000
Vocalist and bassist AZ has emerged from the twisted mayhem of her previous project, The Scissor Girls -- a legendary group of Chicago-based No Wave avatars renowned for their eerie and bizarre theatrics -- with a new venture known as Bride of No No. AZ is quick to point out that Bride of No No is definitely a mature group of musical equals and shouldn't be seen as her new backing band. However, Bride of No No does take up many of the Scissor Girls' initiatives, ambitions, and themes, both improving on them and departing from them.
In the six tracks on their new LP, B.O.N.N. Apetit!, Bride of No No regularly sacrifices clarity of expression for seemingly stream-of-consciousness lyrical portraits of madness, nebulous clouds of guitars, and the omnipresent backbone of stable drumming and bass. The band enlisted such heavyweights as Elliot Dicks, John Golden, Steve Albini, and Jim O'Rourke to help give the recording the lacerating claws it needs, and you can hear their presence on the album. Bride of No No may evoke memories of God Is My Co-Pilot, UT, Vue (formerly known as The Audience), and obscure Olympia acts like Kreviss with their snarling idiosyncratic narratives which demand you to pick up the liner notes and pore over the lyrics.
Much of the buzz around Bride of No No stems from their live performances and their methods of challenging preconceived notions about identity and assumptions about motivation and ideology. The band has further encloaked its mixture of performance Art Brut and punk noise mayhem in mistique and intrigue by wearing full length tunics to literally mask their identities, performing unnannounced, and using cryptic initials to retain their personal anonymity. Definitely a band with more to communicate than simply their music, Bride of No No promises to continue evolving into a fearsome and irresistible entity.

Azita's Bride Of No No have delivered their magnum opus to date with this, their untitled second album. Their deconstructive sonic stance now collides head-on with their newly discovered (and surprisingly overt) desire to atonally hook you into senseless submission.
A quick history lesson, redux: Revered authentics of Chicago’s mid-90’s “NOW Wave” scene, The Scissor Girls made what some would consider to be the ultimate post-art school musical statement. As the SG’s developed, Azita launched her own label, SG Research to release Scissor Girls 7”s (long gone collector scum), and her own solo album, Music For Scattered Brains. Her artwork was every bit as compellingly arcane as the music itself; Atavistic picked up the slack by releasing most of SG Research’s out-of-print output on CD, as well as the SG’s watershed full-length debut, We People Space With Phantoms in 1996. In the hearts and minds of many- including THE NEW YORK FUCKING TIMES, the Scissor Girls are held in similar esteem to legends such as The Slits, Au Pairs, Mars and The Contortions. As with all the best musical collectives, their time would be very short before calling it a day.
Fast forward to 1999: an atonal phoenix rises from the ashes- and slowly, unperceptibly, clandestinely- and Bride Of No No is born. Their 2001 Atavistic debut, B.O.N.N. Apetit! won rave reviews with their gauze-shrouded “uniforms” and the record’s strangely dischordant yet compelling riffs; a tour with Man Or Astroman? unfolded, and a select slot at the Los Angeles installment of All Tomorrow’s Parties in 2002 ensued as well. Since then, the members of B.O.N.N. have been working on many projects. Available to YOU now is the delicious fruit of their burkha-shrouded labor.
As we are prone to say in these parts: it’s Azita’s World, we just live in it: she’s back from a great SXSW performance with (SMOG), and will be touring in support of her Drag City solo debut, ENANTIODROMIA this Spring & Summer. So: see her live, clutch your Scissor Girls records tightly, BUY the B.O.N.N. rumor & sell the NEWS- while it's fresh.
Atavistic 2003
Biography
by Johnny Loftus
Bride of No No was a theatrical noise rock quartet formed in spring 1999 by Chicagoan Azita Youssefi. After her influential Scissor Girls project fizzled out, Youssefi formed Bride of No No with J Graff, MV Carbon, and J Kienzier. Their names may have been fabricated; it was all part of the show, as BONN also performed in floor-length, burka-inspired shrouds that left only their eyes visible. Since the Scissor Girls had made Youssefi a bit of a star in the underground music community, the mystery surrounding her new project was in part designed to present the quartet as equals, unmarred by preconceived notions of reputation or gender. Atavistic issued the debut Bride of No No release in early 2001. B.O.N.N. Apetit!'s discordant anti-melodies and claustrophobic vibe were a critical success, and the band performed at the Los Angeles installment of the artist-curated All Tomorrow's Parties music festival ( where Sonic Youth was host). However, by 2002, strife within the group was rampant, and by June of that year, Bride of No No was no more. The quartet had managed to record another album before its dissolution, however; the self-titled release appeared on Atavistic in June 2003. Youssefi went on to a solo career, and Drag City issued her debut, Enantidromia, in early 2003.

Here Comes the Bride
AZITA YOUSSEFI, Mystery Girl
By Liz Armstrong
Azita Youssefi has a reputation as an exhibitionist. A couple years ago she posed at O'Hare for the Lumpen spin-off Easy Listener wearing nothing but a pair of angel wings, and as bassist and front woman for the theatrical no-wave band the Scissor Girls, she performed in everything from a Catholic school uniform to a two-piece made of bubble wrap. Offstage she could be seen loping around in heavy raccoon makeup or aviator goggles, and though her look is now more demure, she's fond of practicing classical piano in the game room at the Empty Bottle.
But in her new group, Bride of No No—whose first record, B.O.N.N. Apetit! (Atavistic), will be released on Tuesday—Youssefi and her three bandmates cover themselves completely in all-white outfits inspired by traditional Islamic women's clothing. The long tunics and veil-like masks ensure that the women's personalities emerge only through their music, a heavy, strategically loose kind of denatured doomsday rock. But the masks also allow them to turn the tables on the audience, watching them as if through a surveillance mirror.
The idea for the costumes came in part from Youssefi's childhood, which was split between the U.S. and Iran. Her parents, both doctors, were completing their residencies in the U.S. when she was born, then moved back to Tehran when she was almost two. When Youssefi was old enough to go to kindergarten, they sent her to the Tehran American School, which catered to Americans who'd come to Iran to get rich in the oil business. She says she was singled out there for not speaking English well. "It's like the kids didn't even realize they weren't in America," she says. (In a yearbook from the school, a good number of her classmates are wearing Mickey Mouse paraphernalia.)
One day in late 1978, when Youssefi was seven years old, she noticed a soldier across the street from her house carrying a machine gun. The Iranian revolution had begun. Her school let out early for Christmas that year and was bombed shortly thereafter, and in early '79 the Youssefi family permanently relocated to Bethesda, Maryland.
Her parents were used to a lifestyle that included parties at the shah's palace, where monkeys would dance on guests' laps, but in the States, Youssefi says, they were "just more doctors." Still, she was sent to Holton-Arms, an elite all-girls' school where most of the students were the children of government officials. It was a bad time to be an Iranian kid in America: "You took our hostages," her classmates sneered at her on the bus. Meanwhile her home life was regimented down to the minute: her father would post detailed after-school schedules on her bedroom door, and when she began taking piano lessons, he took them too. As soon as she was old enough to drive, Youssefi took off for D.C. whenever she could, attending punk shows and hanging out with a bunch of people "who tried to outdo each other on being totally psychotic. Criminal. I mean, just out of the blue they might decide to beat you up and steal your boots."
At her high school graduation, she wore elbow-length fingerless lace gloves and a platinum-blond new-wave do. Bob Hope, whose granddaughter was in the class, was the guest speaker. "He was late," she says. "After hours of waiting, he finally landed on the lawn in his helicopter....And he told some dumb joke about when he was in high school, `back before the wheel was invented,' he said, and everyone laughed like it was the funniest thing they'd ever heard."
In the fall of 1989 Youssefi came to Chicago to attend the School of the Art Institute, where she studied drawing and sound, but she found the relaxed atmosphere unfulfilling. "Basically," she says, "if you showed up you passed." She says she lost interest in visual art as a primary medium because there was no way of telling how people were responding to it, and in 1991 her craving for more immediate audience interaction gave birth to the Scissor Girls. For her thesis project she created an intimate sitting room, placed so people had to seek it out, and decorated the walls with her paintings. Her solo record, Music for Scattered Brains (rereleased in 1996 by Atavistic), lay on a nearby turntable, waiting for someone to deliberately set it in motion.
Around this time, Youssefi says, "there was a lot of potential. A lot of things were happening around Wicker Park before all the gentrification, so many bands and so much inspiration. There was the idea that anyone could be in a band....And there was no hierarchy to getting a gig." But in 1996, after five years and two guitarists, the Scissor Girls broke up—just as Atavistic released their second full-length record, We People Space With Phantoms. The scene, which had expanded exponentially in the mid-90s, no longer seemed as exciting, and "there was this feeling of `What are we doing this for?' No one really seemed to have long-term musician goals."
In the years following the Scissor Girls' collapse, Youssefi played music with several women in hopes of forming another band. But Bride of No No didn't officially form until April 1999, and at first it was even more mysterious than it is now. Shows weren't announced in advance, and the costumes were part of the act from the start. "This isn't `Azita's band,' like a lot of people are saying," Youssefi explains. "This is the first band I've been in where we're all equals, all strong individually, all take initiative. We're all interested in studying what we're doing and developing as musicians."
Youssefi says the lineup's no longer a deep secret, but that her bandmates are enjoying the anonymity and don't want their names published. (They're identified in the CD booklet by initials and what seem to be surnames.) "When people know who you are, they automatically think they know what you're all about," she says. "We don't want anyone to have preconceived ideas based on who we are as individuals. . . . We want to present ourselves as an entity. It probably won't be like this forever. The way we are now is just a millisecond in Bride of No No history."
