#777Sea Scouts formed in Hobart in 1995, following Tim Evans' ending of his previous band Mouth. Firstly comprising of Tim (vocals, guitar), Zach von Bamburger (vocals, bass) and Monica Fikerle (drums), then Tim, Zach and a drum machine, this lineup released $100 000 Mammal (no label,1995). Zach left and was replaced by Alex Pope (vocals, bass) and Andy Hazel (drums), before Sara Libero took the drum stool and they recorded the album Pattern Recognition (Choozy/Unstable Ape 1996). Within weeks of it's release Sea Scouts toured Eastern Australia supporting Pavement. Months later they again left Hobart to support Archers of Loaf, before returning to the lineup of Evans, Pope and Fikerle and moved to Melbourne.
Sea Scouts quickly gathered a reputation as a formidable live act, due to the intensity of their sound and a rigorous DIY-ethic conviction to their music. As with all good music it was an unfettered extension of their lives. This imitable authenticity packed an emotional punch rarely found in Australian music and won them an array of fans and support slots with Mogwai and other international acts.
Indicating a greater attention to textures and production, Sea Scouts' final realease Beacon Of Hope (Patsy/Unstable Ape, 1998), again featured Pope's riff-heavy, high-pitched bass, glued to Evans' guitar through disortion, volume and a rigourous rehearsal schedule. Fikerle's martial drumming underpinned Evans' lyrics with an affecting directness. Lyrics concerned with alienation, social injustice and small-town Tasmanian nightmares born from poverty in winter and a wilful ignorence of conventional technical ability.
Following their split in 2000 Evans moved on to front Bird Blobs, Pope returned to Hobart to front Vodka Party, and now formidable metal band The Ruins while Fikerle joined Love of Diagrams and Baseball.
