"To be one hundred percent honest, I don't think that there has been a record like this in a while. Settle Down City draws the listener in with great grooves and infectious rhythms. It challenges with gratingly jangled guitars that continually push the envelope of what to expect from where Young Widows left off with their previous incarnation. The vocals act like another instrument that emphasizes musical passages and put the exclamation point on parts of the conversation. I highly recommend this to any fan of the noisier side of music."

Taken at the member level, Louisville's Young Widows are basically the second coming of the defunct Breather Resist, since everyone but singer Steve Sindoni is present. But one listen to Settle Down City, Young Widows' debut for Jade Tree, and it's pretty apparent that the name change was warranted: this is a new band with a new sound. Not that the two bands couldn't share a bill together, but the Young Widows trio is a step removed from the metallic hardcore chaos of Breather with their noise rock-inspired post-punk grooves. They take a lot of cues from bands like the Jesus Lizard, and consequently, fans of such will find much to like here (take special note of "Glad He Ate Her," whose title is more than coincidental). The guys love distortion and reverb, with songs like "Formerer," the vocal freak-out "The First Half," and the confrontational "Almost Dead Beat" thriving on it amidst discordant playing where instruments and vocals all crash off each other to land in a wonderful musical heap on the floor. But nothing is just plain noisy; there is always solid playing to guide each note along. Evan Patterson's guitar work remains excellent as always, and he takes over main vocals with more of a cathartic yell than a harsh hardcore growl. Its effect doesn't knock listeners over on impact, but coupled with the bashing drums of Geoff Paton and throbbing basslines of Nick Thieneman, the emotionally charged sonic attack of Young Widows is as unsettling as it is compelling.

Still menacing, even without all the screaming and bashing, the sparse, cavernous textures created by My Morning Jacket producer Kevin Ratterman combined with the songs’ jagged dissonance make them severely tense. “The Guitar,” from 2008’s Old Wounds, hinted at this slow and spacious direction, and much of the three-piece’s 2011 album plays at a similarly steady pace, half-filled with music that culminates from goth, blues, and no wave, and half-filled with darkness. Nick Cave's influence is noticeable throughout, both in singer/guitarist Evan Patterson’s sing-talk vocal style and in the playing by Nick Thieneman and Jeremy McMonigle. A crawling Bonham beat drives the album’s middle, on “Lean on the Ghost,” “The Muted Man,” and “Right in the End,” behind sparse blasts of distorted bass and wiry slices of guitar. In other places things become more rocky and primal, with the feedback engaged. But even when Young Widows' scorn escalates and the mood becomes more frenetic, In and Out of Youth and Lightness always feels detached. Maybe that’s what makes it so unnerving, and so good.

#777Since their inception in 2006, Young Widows have released four studio albums – each pushing their restless drive
towards the incomparable a little further. Those albums – Settle Down City (2006), Old Wounds (2008), In and Out of Youth and Lightness (2011), and Easy Pain (2014) – were as bruising as they were brilliant, as menacing as they were mysterious.
DECAYED: Ten Years of Cities, Wounds, Lightness, and Pain perfectly charts Young Widows' evolution from inspired post-hardcore trio to peerless entity crafting profound combinations of post-punk, noise rock, heavy psych, and gothic folk. The fifteen tracks in this collection originally appeared on stand-alone singles, b-side, splits with like- minded artists (including Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Pelican, Melt-Banana, and MY DISCO), and rare compilations. Four of them have never been released until now.
Of the many impressive aspects of Young Widows' decade-plus run as a band, perhaps most remarkable is the quality and breadth of music they made that didn't appear on their albums. Every song here is a standout track from the evolving eras of the band, and as with all things Young Widows, DECAYED pays respect to the past while planting roots for the future.
Biography
Though singer Steve Sindoni amicably parted ways with Louisville, KY's Breather Resist in December 2005, the remaining members -- guitarist Evan Patterson (formerly of Black Cross, the National Acrobat, and various other Louisville bands), bassist Nick Thieneman, and drummer Geoff Paton -- weren't ready yet to throw in the towel. They pressed on and chose not to replace Sindoni, with Patterson picking up the main vocal duties. The trio entered the studio the following April with intentions to record Breather Resist's second album. But when the resulting music was not quite the metallic hardcore aggression of their past, the guys consequently decided to retire Breather Resist and its accompanying discography altogether, forging ahead instead with a new identity, sound, and name: Young Widows. Taking influence for their dark, reverb-heavy noise rock and moody post-punk grooves from bands like Hoover, the Jesus Lizard, Shellac, and the Melvins, their debut, Settle Down City, was issued on Jade Tree in September 2006. About two weeks of nationwide dates preceded its release, and the band headed to Europe soon after with Seattle's Akimbo. Two years after their debut, Old Wounds found the band teaming up with producer Kurt Ballou, who compiled the album from live performances on the road and in studio performances. Citing a lack of interest from Jade Tree, the band switched to Temporary Residence before releasing the album in September of 2008.
