This is some dark and snarling music. The songs themselves bring back memories of faded Dinosaur Jr t-shirts and stinky cowboy shirts, of plastic beer pots with cracks in them. Of rolled cigarettes and of being drunk by 4 in the afternoon. Of getting to the show late and trying to snake your way through to the front of the crowd without being spotted by the speed freak who still thinks you owe him money. It’s music of scuffed Blundstones and chatting up people you’re not really even that interested in. ‘I’ve Been Told’ oozes with the same kind of helplessness as a 3 day binge, of waking up the next day with cuts on your hands and gum in your hair. Recorded live the songs subject matter is as dark and unrelenting as it gets. Topics include everything from driving getaway cars, forlorn hookers and drunken guys lying almost dead on barroom floors. But despite the bleak subject matter of most songs Here Come the Lies is not without a good shot of humour ‘Chrome! Preen! Tarzan Grip is real good shit! cries vocalist Gareth Liddiard on a cover of the Cramps ‘New Kind of Kick’ while on the album’s best track ‘Six Ways to Sunday’ he sings ‘What felt like purgatory just last week is starting to feel more like a toilet seat’ This is swamp blues at it’s swampiest. You want classic song structure or ‘love me tender’ type lyrics, we’ll you’ve come to the wrong place. There’s going to be a lot of people who will hate the songs, the delivery, the singing and the playing. The Drones don’t give a fuck. They are from Perth. They are used to people hating them. The guitar of Rui Pereira morphs in and out of the bass licks of Fiona Kitchin while angry drums of Christian Strybosch help with the menacing vibe. But it’s Liddiard vitriolic and venomous snarl that makes the songs sound well so, angry. Covers of Chuck Berry’s ‘Downbound Train’ and Leadbelly’s ‘Dekalb Blues’ are given their own unique spin and the by the closing ‘The Country of Love’ where Liddiard sings about ‘pills and dildos and constipation and lies’ you’ve realise that you’ve born witness to a harrowing 12 songs.

“This isn't really an outtakes or b-side record...its just that when we recorded ‘Here Come The Lies’ and ‘Wait Long By The River’ we did them six months apart and we had a huge pile of songs....those two records were both really long and we had to ditch some of the stuff we were doing to keep them reasonably timed....most of the stuff is recorded straight up live in the studio....so basically if I fucked up a lyric it didn't go on the record. we didn't have the time or money or patience to correct anything....all I can remember about these sessions is just being tired and drunk and hoarse and broke and way too loud for a recording studio...it seems like 20 years ago. But I really like this record...it’s got everything I like about rock n roll in there so I’m totally cool with it..... even though it's a little messy and rushed. lots of people think we are shit and I hope this makes them think we are even worse after hearing it cause we are just doing our thing and doing a thorough job of it......I hate to sound trite but this is what we think punk sounds like you know??? and any band worth anything knows that you are just there take what you think is most valuable in good music and then show it to everybody... kinda pervert it a little to suit... then you try to enjoy it more than everyone else”. ~ Gareth Liddiard

The Drones обитают в Мельбурне, существуют с 2000 года, их второй альбом называется потрясающе «Долго жди на берегу реки и тела твоих врагов проплывут мимо тебя».

The Drones mark their return in 2006 with the release of their much-anticipated third album, Gala Mill. Recorded in a mill on an isolated 10,000 acre farm on Tasmania's east coast, Gala Mill is an album full of extremes — moments of stark, ghostly beauty set against outbursts of the dark, intense noise for which the band is renowned. The album's sense of place is palpable — barking dogs and birdsong are heard between tracks, and the island's history and atmosphere resonate through the songs. This is as diverse and eclectic a collection of songs as The Drones have recorded to date. Infused with a rich sense of history and yet utterly modern, both thought-provoking and viscerally compelling, Gala Mill marks the welcome return of one of Australia's most intelligent, innovative and important bands.

If the Drones have grown a touch more polished and focused with time, it's not at the expense of creating compelling music — if anything, Havilah even more clearly places the band as one of Australia's best rock bands ever, something that goes beyond the clear twang in the voice of Gareth Liddiard right from the start of "Nail It Down," the album's dramatic start. With guitars moving from the understatedly tuneful to sweepingly angry without losing the pace, it suggests Havilah will be nearly all brawl, but instead it takes a generally calmer turn, Liddiard's voice front and center even as the band artfully and alternately arranges itself around the singing and then bursts forth on the breaks. Even that doesn't always happen, though, with "Penumbra" essentially being the Drones unplugged, the calm guitars touched with a distant wail at the song's end sounding like a lost soul. Songs like "The Drifting Housewife," its delicacy marked by bells and building strings even as the lyrics meditate on identity and social expectations, and the tense "Careful as You Go" show that even as the Drones sound less overtly frenetic they still exude a sense of unsettled threat, suggesting the build to a final fierce resolution rather than necessarily reaching it. If nothing else, some of the opening lyrics to "Oh My" show that the band's contrarian spirit is far from dead: "People are a waste of food....they're only happy when they're burying their friends."

There’s no question The Drones are at their most mercurial live. Now the band is set to acknowledge its reputation again with the release of The Drones – Live At The Hi-Fi. The career-hopping set was recorded on the opening night of Brisbane’s Hi-Fi Bar in front of a sold-out crowd.
Live At The Hi-Fi is released 1 October as the bonus disc of a repackaged Havilah. For those who already own the full Drones catalogue, the live album will also be available for download on iTunes. Included are set-list staples like The Minotaur, Shark Fin Blues, I Don’t Ever Want To Change and Nail It Down.

Gareth Liddiard has never been one to shy away from expressing the way things are and he again goes straight for the jugular on his band’s latest album, I Sea Seaweed. In the past, the Drones-eye-view has been entrenched in the surrounding landscape and its people. So while there’s something quintessentially Australian about The Drones, with their passionate local fans lapping up their visceral live shows, it's hard to imagine their music translating and making much of an impact overseas.
The strong sense of place is retained here, but they also branch out and move to more universal themes. Most importantly, this is a confident jump up in quality after 2008’s variable Havilah. The band play to their strengths, marking a triumphant return to bloody, bruised rock epics.
The lyric that best sums up the album, is the succinct "life is cruel". The album offers a bleak view of a beaten-down population who are “lockstepping in their millions”, with a sense of helplessness relieved by the rumbling outrage of the louder peaks of the songs; when they crash in, they’re like wrecking balls against the big, brick walls of an unfeeling world. A lyric like Laika’s "half a pound of sugar on an old blackboard" sounds at home in a social realist ballad, but it's a punch in the gut when delivered with such venom and menace.
The mid-album cut, Nine Eyes, is a walk down a personal memory lane, with a Google street-view perspective given a creepy, possessive undercurrent. The insistent "I'm all I need" of the chorus is at odds with the insecure, obsessive ownership issues of the verses. "What kind of asshole drives this lime green Commodore?" sneers Liddiard, equal parts disturbing and funny.
Laika follows the story of a dog shot into space as part of the controversial Russian space trials of the '50s, the victim a stray who was always intended to perish. It builds up to a thundering takeoff into space, a blood-soaked Space Oddity. Whether they’re dogs or underdogs, Liddiard's characters are fighting against the odds and helplessly weighted down by a harsh, cruel reality. It all comes to a head in the fiery closing track, Why Write A Letter That You'll Never Send. After a gentle acoustic intro, it crawls ominously to its halfway point. It then lets rip, erupting into a rant about everything from the holocaust to the Vatican, even wily a dig at Band Aid. This is the best kind of anger management, surely?
I Sea Seaweed’s eight songs are brash, rallying and raucous, but also insecure, unhinged and pessimistic. It’s that brilliant juxtaposition of conflicting emotions that has always marked The Drones as more than just an everyday garage-rock band and here they’re on commanding form.
