Очень загадочно все, что окружает этих мистиков с гитарами — дешифраторов древних индейских текстов. Очевидно лишь то, что они — одни из самых знаковых фигур в американской альтернативной музыке. Об их концертах, полных экзальтации и анархического драйва, ходят легенды. Легенды становятся явью. Спиритический рок-сеанс в серии концертов AVANTCLUB. Это первый концерт в России и один из двух концертов, которые даст эта выдающаяся команда в Европе в этом году!
«...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead» — группа с таким необычным названием образовалась в конце 1994 г. Джейсон Рис и Конрад Кили, каждый из которых был и вокалистом, и гитаристом, и барабанщиком, познакомились на Гавайях, после чего переехали в городок Остин в Техасе. Там дуэт сыграл первые концерты под названием «You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead». Со временем к группе присоединялся Кевин Ален (гитара) и Нил Буш (бас, сэмплер). Чуть позже они добавили к названию неоднозначное многоточие. Название группы друзья взяли из древней молитвы майя, которая почти дословно совпадает со строкой из древнеегипетской «Книги мёртвых».
Вскоре на местном лейбле Golden Hour вышла небольшая концертная запись. Именно благодаря концертам группа уже успела стать легендарной в инди-кругах. «Мы никогда не рассылали демо-записи, — признаётся Конрад. — Наши концерты говорили сами за себя».
В начале 1998 года группа выпустила полноценный дебютный альбом «...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead». «Okay this is a song about killing everybody» — так начинается первая песня на альбоме. От электронных взрывов группа обращается к хаотическим гитарным взвизгам — а порой всё это происходит одновременно. «Этот альбом демонстрирует, как важно не пытаться быть важным», — считают критики.
Второй альбом «Trail of Dead» — «Madonna» — вышел на известном лейбле независимой музыки Merge (осень 1999). «Джейсон вырос под влиянием панк-рока, — рассказывает Конрад. — Когда мы познакомились, я впервые дал ему послушать такие группы, как Rush и Pink Floyd». В США за «Trail of Dead» прочно укрепилась репутация бескомпромиссных разрушителей, наследников рок-н-ролльных традиций The Who: они известны тем, что в конце выступления крушат всю сценическую аппаратуру. От одного из первых концертов у Джейсона даже остался шрам… Между тем Конрад Кили и Джейсон Рис всегда были интеллектуалами. Они интересуются цивилизациями древних времён и загадками Средневековья, изучают современные работы по археологии, пытаясь понять, каковы истоки нашей цивилизации. Конрад пишет научно-фантастический роман и критические статьи о современном изобразительном искусстве — продолжая, впрочем, быть бескомпромиссным и в этой сфере: одна его статья, опубликованная в журнале Filter, называется «Абстрактное искусство никуда не годится». Он учится играть на виоле, собирает струнные инструменты и пишет музыку для струнных.
Исследователи по натуре, «Trail of Dead» пишут музыку, которая требует внимательного изучения. Их своеобразная музыка, созданная под влиянием Sonic Youth и Fugazi, классического рока эпохи Led Zepellin и пост-рока Mogwai, балансирует на стыке инди и альтернативной культуры. «Это новый панк для нового тысячелетия, если только в новом тысячелетии такие термины, как «панк», которыми мы засоряем наш музыкальный словарь, будут иметь значение», — пишут о них журналисты, которым не удаётся вписать их в какую-нибудь одну систему.
