Delicatessen were an indie-rock group formed in Leicester, England in the early 1990s. They released three albums and four singles before splitting in 1998. Delicatessen was formed by Neil Carlill (vocals, guitar), Craig Bown (guitar, flute), Pete Capewell (bass) and Stuart Dayman (drums), taking their name from the French film. Signing to Starfish records, they debuted in October 1994 with the single Inviting Both Sisters To Dinner, followed by C.F. Kane in April 1995. Debut album Skin Touching Water was released a month later. They headlined the little tent at Reading that summer, with Jonny Wood added on keyboards, percussion, backing vocals, and violin from then on. Capewell had already left, replaced by Will Foster. The second album Hustle Into Bed, a dark, piano/string led album, was issued in 1996, produced by long time Nick Cave/Bad Seeds/Birthday Party engineer, Tony Cohen. The band reappeared in early 1998, with a third album There's No Confusing Some People on Viper records. After two token gigs, the band split, Carlill and Foster joining members of Supergrass and Powder in indie supergroup Lodger.
Delicatessen recorded two sessions for John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show, both in 1995. The first was a four track studio session and the second six tracks recorded at the Reading Festival.
Will Foster now plays keyboards in The Tears. Neil Carlill is making music in the United States, with Vedette, Me Me the Moth & Chicanery. Stuart Dayman is a photographer. Pete Capewell has become a teacher at Ellesmere Port Catholic High School as head of the maths department. Jonny Wood played keyboards with Ten Benson, and bass and violin with early Poptones band, January.
A BIOGRAPHY
written by Neil Carlill
The band got together in 1993 in the picturesque suburbs of Leicester, England. The original lineup worked on songs into 1994, while playing gigs in the Midlands with occasional forays into the north London music scene. It was here that they first encountered the many-headed beast that is The Music Business.
Early in 1994 they received their first live review in Melody Maker , soon followed by an ON piece tipping them for future success. With Management secured the Band began the dubious courtship ritual known as ‘attracting record-company Interest’. Companies sniffed and courtship rituals were played out, culminating in a Deal being signed sealed and delivered with Big Life Records.
The first EP, “Inviting Both Sisters Out To Dinner” was recorded with Portly Adam & the Ants/Tindersticks producer Ian Caple. The line-up for this first phase of Delicatessen was:
Craig Bown : Guitars, Flute.
Stuart Dayman : Drums and Percussion
Peter Capewell : Bass
Neil Carlill : Vocals, Acoustic Guitar , Keyboards
The e.p was released in September 1994 and reviewed in small yet highly complimentary quantities.
Recording of the first album began in late 1994 at Toerag Studios in East London With Liam Molloy and Edward Deegan. The vintage analogue specifications of the studio shaped the classic sound of “Skin Touching Water” and the first single to be taken from the album “CF Kane”. The single was released in the spring of 1995.
Before their first nationwide tour, bass player Peter Capewell was Replaced by Will Foster. This was a busy time, as Delicatessen completed a Peel Session at the BBC’s famous Bing Crosby’s Last Stand studio and made trips to play gigs in Germany and Holland while preparing to release their third single “I’m Just Alive”.
The summer of 1995 saw the release of the first album “Skin Touching Water”. Delicatessen’s long-playing debut received excellent reviews both in the U.K and overseas (France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg all raved). Videos for “CF Kane” and “ I’m Just Alive” were filmed and received sporadic rotation on Video channels around Europe.
Delicatessen played both the Phoenix and Reading festivals in 1995 to support the album and another two U.K tours followed. A multitude of bizarre radio sessions were recorded Whilst on the road. (forthcoming in the MP3 section). A couple of special gigs towards the end of 1995 gave the band a chance to try out some new songs that would be a part of their second album.
The first show was At the Borderline in London and was all acoustic with accompanying Brass and String sections. This show was recorded on a 24 track mobile for possible release.
The other show was in Paris just before Christmas and featured, for oddity, a power cut (right in the middle of “Zebra/Monkey/Liar”) caused by a City-Wide Workers Strike in Paris.
1996 begat the second album “Hustle Into Bed”. Recording began in Spring with Nick Cave producer Tony Cohen. The sound was heavily laden with strings and brass and the associated signature sound of the producer. When the album was completed, a rather ill-advised UK support tour was undertaken.
This was followed by another bad idea advocated by the record company and resisted by the band; an out-of- touch theatre producer called Genghis was hired to Stage Manage a multi-media theatrical event to promote the release of Hustle Into Bed. After several days of madcap, Machiavellian backstage activity, the three show ‘happening’ was pulled off with a minimum of personal embarrassment (thankfully).
The first and only single from the album, “Monkey Suit” was then released, with an accompanying video shot at the Roundhouse in north London.
Relations with record company Big Life had been deteriorating for some time and a parting of the ways came to pass as 1996 drew to a close. Small but imperfectly formed label Viper Records stepped up in 1997 for the band’s next release. A series of sessions that were intended to comprise an EP became itself extended as more and more material developed. This Studio Time resulted in what is essentially a mini-album, entitled “There’s No Confusing Some People”. Jono Twycross co-produced this record with the band.
The two club dates in north London, which followed the release, turned out to be the last gigs Delicatessen have played to date.
Neil and Will formed another band that Neil, for one, regrets very much indeed.
Neil, Craig and Stuart have continued to work on music periodically over the last five years. 2004 saw a breakthrough when new songs of Alarming Quality began to form themselves into a collective known as the next Delicatessen album. Then came Benoit and a website. Plans for a new era of Delicatessen are taking shape even as we hunt and peck. Even original back-in-the-day Svengali Mike Frost is back in the picture.
Neil Carlill (vocals, guitar)
Craig Bown (guitar, flute)
Pete Capewell (bass)
Stuart Dayman (drums)
