Beginning life in 1998, Aereogramme was initially a project between Craig B (former member of krautrock/post-rock band Ganger) and Campbell McNeil, which they intended to consist of "acoustic guitars and electronic noises," but the pair's shared love of aggressive music (particularly left-field hardcore along the lines of stated favourites Will Haven and Isis) in addition to the slower, prettier style they played initially (confessed influences including Low and Red House Painters) soon led to them bring a drummer into the fold in the form of ex-jazz percussionist Martin Scott. As a three-piece the band began to self-release singles the following year, but only started to garner serious interest after being snatched up by the label Chemikal Underground, responsible for the rise of post-rock legends Mogwai to whom Aereogramme are sometimes compared.
In 2001 they released their debut album, A Story in White, an album diverse in its methods (from lo-fi acoustic picking to full-on metalcore assaults) but unified by Craig's distinct melodic style and tendency to split his vocals between high-pitched singing and demonic screaming. The album was released by Matador in the USA, and considering the band's fairly small potential audience (due to their Jekyll and Hyde song-writing which many indie-rock fans found off-putting) it sold extremely well.
Constantly touring Europe and occasionally touring America, Aereogramme followed up their debut album with Sleep and Release in 2003, a self-produced effort recorded in the USA over a few weeks. While A Story in White was put together from existing material, Sleep and Release was more carefully constructed and the recording is more polished, leading to more exposure, particularly in America, helped along by single "Indiscretion #243" which came with a curious b-side, a creeping gothic cover of Michael Jackson's "Thriller". This was followed in 2004 by the EP/mini-album Seclusion, continuing in the same vein as Sleep and Release but expanding on the band's synthesis of electronic elements into their rock foundation.
Aereogramme's fourth studio album, My Heart Has a Wish That You Would Not Go, was released in October 2006 in Japan and early the following year in Europe and North America. It was their final recording; In May, Craig B announced the band's split, citing "multiple and complex" reasons, including "the never-ending financial struggle coupled with an almost superhuman ability to dodge the zeitgeist". Aereogramme played its final show at the Connect Festival in Inverary in August 2007.
