The Strange Boys and Girls Club is the debut album by the band The Strange Boys. It was released via In The Red Records on March 3, 2009 in the USA and a day earlier in the UK.
The album was initially recorded with labelmate Jay Reatard, however the band was unhappy with the takes recorded in the sessions with Jay, and subsequently rerecorded the album with Orville Neeley. Ryan Sambol has stated that this was because the recording sessions with Reatard took place at a time when the songs were still 'new', and that he "hadn't really finished them." Dusted magazine reported that the recordings with Neeley took place in a disused liquor store, however, this was later discredited by Ryan Sambol in an interview with Paste Magazine. Sambol clarified that this was the case with an earlier release, recorded with Greg Ashley, not ...And Girls Club, the recording of which took place in Neeley's garage.
The album was released to generally favourable reviews, attaining a score of 77% from the reviews collated by Metacritic.

Acronym for 'Martin Luther Kings'. The Strange Boys released an EP entitled The Strange Boys Will Now Forever Be Known As The Martin Luther Kings in 2008, as Ryan Sambol intended to change the name of the band. Being outvoted by the other band members on the decision, he later chose to use the name for a country music project started with friend Shane Renfro, co-writer of tracks 8 and 16.

"The Strange Boys take a big step out of the garage murk of their early days with Live Music, yet somehow end up sounding even more like a part of Austin, Texas than ever. The band recruited fellow Austinite Jim Eno to produce the album’s first half and ventured to Costa Mesa, California to work with Mike McHugh on the second half; though Live Music's actual sound is free of the grit that marked albums like Be Brave, it rambles like a bar crawl, and Ryan Sambol's voice is as smoked as Austin barbecue. As on Be Brave, Sambol and company spend most of the album chugging along at an amiable strut, particularly on “Me and You,” “My Life Beats Me,” and “Doueh.” The pianos that popped up from time to time on that album return here, adding to the honky tonk feel of “You Take Everything for Granite When You’re Stone” and the excellent “Saddest,” which interrupts its wry shuffle with a synth interlude reaffirming that the Strange Boys are still keeping it weird. However, the band also uses its newfound polish to try different sounds on for size: the closing instrumental “Opus,” a surf-blues exercise in tension and release, boasts some great guitar tones, and “You and Me,” a strangely timeless-sounding ballad, has a subtle drama that recalls Eno’s main project, Spoon. Still, the Strange Boys’ greatest strength is making the rootsy sounds they love seem fresh and unfettered. They’re steeped in tradition, not hidebound to it, at times evoking the Band, the Stones, and the Faces as well as contemporaries like Childballads and Cold War Kids, but always sounding like themselves. Their harmonica wails like a blues harp on the soulful “Walking Two by Two,” then harks back to the British Invasion on “Punk’s Pajamas.” Sambol is evolving into a fine lyricist, equal parts poet and philosopher, as well as an expressive singer. He murmurs lines like “You can’t choose who you love and you can’t choose when you die” on “Over the River and Through the Woulds” as though he’s singing them more to himself than an audience; “Mama Shelter”’s “There just had to come a time/When you would decide/To take leave/To keep alive/What you’d started long before/We ever said hi” sums up so much about the end of relationships. While Live Music sometimes feels a little too rambling for its own good, the growth the band shows is even more impressive because it seems so effortless. The Strange Boys are a rock band based out of Austin, Texas, comprised of the members Ryan Sambol (Guitar, Lead Vocals, Harmonica), Philip Sambol (Bass), Greg Enlow (Guitar), Seth Densham (Drums), Jenna Thornhill-DeWitt (Saxophone, Backing Vocals) and Tim Presley (Backing Vocals). Their music incorporates stylistic elements of garage rock, punk, R&B and country. The group have been compared to acts such as Chuck Berry, England's Newest Hit Makers-era Rolling Stones, 13th Floor Elevators and other bands featured on the compilation album, Nuggets. However, in an interview Ryan Sambol dismissed the lattermost of these comparisons as "ridiculous", stating the album was "filled mostly with boring stuff and horrible lyrics."
The Strange Boys were formed in Dallas, Texas in 2001 as a punk duo by Ryan Sambol and Matt Hammer while the pair was in 8th grade. Ryan's brother Philip Sambol returned to Dallas from college and joined in 2003.
After releasing their debut EP, States Newest Noise Makers, in 2004 and adding Austinite Greg Enlow to the lineup, the band relocated to Austin in late 2006.
The band later released their Nothing EP in 2007 on Dusty Medical Records and a self-released EP, The Strange Boys Will Now Forever Be Known As The Martin Luther Kings, in 2008 before issuing their debut full length album, entitled The Strange Boys and Girls Club via In The Red Records on March 3, 2009.
In late 2009 the band underwent some line-up changes, with drummer and founding member Matt Hammer being replaced by Seth Densham, originally of Mika Miko (who disbanded in October, 2009). Jenna Thornhill-DeWitt, also a former member of Mika Miko, was added as saxophonist and backing vocalist, and Tim Presley, of Darker My Love, also joined to contribute backing vocals.
Around the same time, the newly outfitted line-up of the Strange Boys signed a deal with UK record label, Rough Trade, to distribute their material outside of the US, as well as announcing details of their sophomore release, Be Brave, which is due on February 22, 2010 (UK) and February 23, 2010 (US) and preceded by a single release of the title track, 'Be Brave', on January 25 (UK) and January 26 (US). The group also announced details of a brief supporting slot throughout November with Julian Casablancas of The Strokes for some of his solo US tour dates.
The Strange Boys have toured alongside acts such as the Mighty Hannibal, Roky Erickson, Mika Miko, Daniel Johnston, Black Lips, Reigning Sound, King Khan, Jay Reatard, Julian Casablancas and made appearances at Austin City Limits Festival and SXSW. The band will be supporting Spoon and Deerhunter on a Spring 2010 tour.
