The title sounds enough like H.P. Lovecraft to make one assume that Orthrelm are your basic death metal merchants, but the Washington D.C.-based guitar-drum duo are a lot weirder and much more interesting than that. Yes, there are elements of death metal in Mick Barr's ultra-shred guitar style and Josh Blair's neck-snapping tempos, but there's at least as much Sonny Sharrock and John Bonham, among other influences you wouldn't expect from an album featuring this title and cover art. The 27-minute album is divided into 15 tracks, but one suspects that this was accomplished through after-the-fact editing; it wouldn't be a surprise to learn that Norildivoth Crallos Lomrixth Urthiln is the result of one extended guitar and drum freak-out that was (shades of the early Amon Düül albums) then cut and pasted into separate tracks. This is a true rarity, an album that fans of Slayer, King Crimson and Eugene Chadbourne should be able to get into about equally. - Stewart Mason, AMG
rthrelm: the name sounds metal; it has that slightly mystical feeling that evokes ancient Egypt and vengeful gods, even if it really has nothing to do with that. And their lineup hints at metal too—a pair of virtuoso musicians, one a bleeding-fingers guitarist and the other a sweaty, skins-slaughtering drummer, combining to create music that will shred your last few brain cells and leave you disemboweled in a corner. It has all the trappings of metal, sure, but there are a few clues contained in this package that Orthrelm might not be all they seem. There’s that ungainly, nonsensical title, and the song names which look like outtakes from Richard D. James’ latest IDM opus—no self-respecting metalhead would fail to evoke images of blood, war or death at least once on the album packaging.
Then, of course, there’s the music. Again, it strives to fool you into thinking it’s metal. The fast guitars and frantic rhythms would certainly make Slayer proud, but there’s something in there that’s not quite right, not quite what you expected. Orthrelm’s peculiar approach to metal both strips down and complicates the genre. The duo of Mick Barr and Josh Blair has, over the course of a handful of stridently anti-accessible releases, made some of the most grating, assaulting, and challenging music to fall under the metal tag.
Their unique style, in many ways, is actually closer to free jazz or classical than metal. The group tears through 15 songs in a mere 27 minutes, and almost half of that time is taken up by the 12-minute closer, “Nrthiln,” which means that most of the other tracks range from 30 seconds to two minutes. Barr’s complex guitar parts are squeezed into these tiny timeframes, and he seems to throw out more notes in a 40-second soundbyte than most guitarists do over a whole album.
The entirety of 2nd 18/04 Norildivoth flows together without much differentiation, the proliferation of machine-gun riffs slowly wearing you down as each song breaks off abruptly, only to throw you once more into the fray as the next track quickly starts up. Though the atmosphere is chaotic, each of these tracks was in fact carefully orchestrated and composed, every note and fill placed for maximum carnage. Much like Beefheart’s Trout Mask Replica, this record is a prime example of composition posing as randomness.
Without any vocals to provide a hint of structure, the role of holding these tracks together would seem to fall to Blair’s drumming. In practice, however, his drums are just as wild and challenging as the guitar parts. Taking his cues from free jazz at its most skronky and uninhibited, Blair thrashes at his kit, following his partner’s lead and providing a dense undercurrent to the music, but his presence never really approaches a conventional rhythm.What the interplay between guitar and drums on this album does add is a sense of multiple layers to the music. The two parts within Orthrelm’s compositions are relatively separate, acting simultaneously but not necessarily always with the same goals in mind. The effect of this is that there is a clear separation, for the listener, between what the two parts are doing. Cumulatively, they both add to the feelings of disorientation and chaos that the music is meant to evoke, but they can also be focused on individually, the different elements of each track isolated from one another.
If the goal of Orthrelm’s music is to directly challenge and confront the listener, their mission is most certainly accomplished. If nothing else, they’ve managed to craft a work guaranteed to utterly annihilate almost anyone who listens to it—even in such a brief time, their music quickly becomes tiring, if not outright unbearable. Brief flashes of playfulness (like the ascending and descending scales on “Satrilovoithal”) betray a sense of humor, but many listeners will probably need an even greater sense of humor to even make it through these recordings.
And yet, there is definitely an undeniable appeal to this album that keeps me coming back again and again. Beyond the showy virtuosity and the sheer abrasive power of this music, Orthrelm has a kind of weird charm that shines through even their densest walls of soloing. This record’s saving grace, the one thing that keeps it interesting, is its ability to surprise: you never hear the same thing twice, and on a record this heavily packed with ideas, that’s quite an accomplishment. - Ed Howard, Stylus Magazine
