The first track, "Elephant" is the best in the whole album.
Bad production aside this track is a nice piece of depressive BM, sounds like a really cleaned up Xasthur track without all of the ever so famous distorted sound. In short this track is a journey though several different black metal sounds. Some parts are heavy and quiet, others are the usual chaotic blast beat attack, and finally there are also some melodic parts in it. The reverend rounds it all out with a nice snarling vocal performance mixed with some clean vocals.
The ten minute track was all Tjolgtjar should have released with this. “Bomb the Ghetto” is a drunken wreck; we get something resembling a black metal sound, some keyboards, the a hip-hop sample following a gunshot outro. This almost sounds like a different band’s material compared to the first track.
Midnight on Witches Sabbat
1. “Midnight on Witches Sabbat” it starts of with church bell that go on for about a minute. Then the guitar comes in and everything else joins. His vocals are not bad but they get annoying after a while they sound really scratchy and dry. The guitar riffs he uses are repetitive but it works for this song. This is the best track in the demo it’s the only one that actually sound like black metal.
2. “Voyage of Satan's Elves” not a bad track but its way to repetitive and again his vocals are still one of his biggest flaws as a one man band. Another thing he uses is keyboards in this track and it just doesn’t work.
3. “Full Moon Devil Wolf” The only thin that I like about this song is that it sounds like old school heavy metal. He eve throw in a solo which sounds pretty good. But then he kills it but trying to turn it black metal and doing his crappy vocals. Then he does a second solo which is alright and then keyboards come in.
4. “Muun Ritual: Ave Tjolgtjari” this song starts of with some sort of native music and people singing “Ave Tjolgtari” and that about it listening to them for like 7 minutes. So it’s basically an outro.
5. “Outro: Hallow's Eve Murder Shape” can’t complain this outro is good.
Voices from the Center of Earth
The musicianship on this album is sub-standard at best, but again, it does get the point across. The drums were the biggest problem for me because you can barely hear them. I can't tell if this is intentional or just over-looked due to it being a one-man-in-a-garage kind of album. Vocals are all over the place, ranging from three or four different kinds of what I can only describe as primitive American Hardcore style vocals, to a very generic Black Metal growl.

The Tjolgtjarian Mass
The music matches the production. Atrocious. JR's vocals are a higher-pitched black metal vocals. And they're annoying. He sounds like he has something stuck in his throat during the entire recording, but decided to go on anyway. The drums sound really out of time and are poorly done. Very poorly done. I understand this is a solo project, but if you're bad at drums, you probably shouldn't do the drum duties for the album. Now the guitars...they're quite hard to hear at times because of the poorly done mixing of this album. But, the guitars are the reason I gave this album 3 points. Because when the guitars are actually audible, there are a few decent riffs here and there. They're usually short, and end up transitioning into something shitty, but they're there.

The vocal styling’s combine King Diamond’s operatic vocals, occult chants, and horribly annoying high-pitched black metal cries in such a way that it makes me want to laugh every time Preston opens his mouth. They are truly a torment no man should have to endure. His vocal patterns are purely silly. It’s like he tries to put an entire song’s worth of lyrics into one verse and spits them out in a cheesy thirty second string of shit. At the end of one song I could swear I heard him burp.
This album basically consists of primitive NWOBHM riffs recorded in a black metal fashion. But instead of quality original guitar riffs, I’m assaulted by a wall of distorted boring sludge. Riffs are often hard to distinguish from song to song, and when you can distinguish them it is because it is being played at a faster tempo. The clean tone on this album is also horrible. Imagine Indian pop music circa 1978. The solos are equally uninspired and thoughtless as the riffs. Blues pentatonic scale abuse. I give it one point because of the single good riff on the second song that is over all too quick.

The first six tracks are the best, taken from the 'The Five Tjolgtjarian Keys And The Gate To Vruguun' demo. They're the least conventionally black metal of the material on this disc, really reminding me of a more uptempo Black Sabbath than anything. The riffing throughout this compilation is really very NWOBHM and first-wave black metal oriented, with a great bluesy feel on the earlier tracks. Drumming in simple and rock-based while the vocals are a silly goblin screech or some surprisingly well-performed clean vocals. Some of the riffs on this release are absolutely stunning, a perfect fusion of bluesy Sabbath and first-wave black metal ala Mercyful Fate.

Midnight Mindtrip
Tjolgtjar plays a mix of European style black metal and regular 80s heavy metal with a bit of Southern rock thrown in every now and then. The black metal sections are usually fast and melodic, in the traditional Scandinavian vein, and the heavy metal sections sound quite NWOBHM inspired, although there are a few nods to Judas Priest (like the fantastic cover of Deciever) and the 80s Italian metal scene (I'm sure that Death SS were a big influence during the recording of this album). There are a few Southern sounding moments, with some laid back, bluesy Lynyrd Skynyrd style solos popping up from time to time. Vocally the Rev can be pretty eclectic, sometimes favouring a standard black metal rasp, sometimes employing regular Halford-style heavy metal vocals, and every now and then delving into King Diamond falsetto territory. He doesn't have the strongest set of lungs but is a competent enough vocalist to make all the different styles work.
The songwriting is strong, each song has a good set of hooks and the compositions flow well, with enough variation to keep things interesting. The cover of Priest's 'Deciever' at the end is surprisingly strong, and I like the fact that there's a Creep Show sample in the song of the same name, with the title theme incorporated into the song at the end. I like the fact that all of the songs are just about the right length to remain interesting, as is the album, and unlike most people I like the fact that the most isn't meant to be taken entirely seriously. People complain about bands like Drudkh and Xasthur making boring music on every album and then act so unwelcoming when a band tries to mix things up and make it a bit more interesting. I'll never understand some people. If you're not one of those people, I recommend you give Tjolgtjar a good listen. The only complaints that I have are that the vocals and production aren't quite as strong as they could be, but that's not really a complaint per se, as I'd probably make similar comments about a lot of my favourite albums. 'Midnight Mindtrip' is enjoyable from start to finish and recommended to anyone that takes an open minded approach to black metal.

Witchcrafts
This album was originally meant to be released under the band name "Haxxan", which was to feature Killjoy from Necrophagia on vocals, and was to be released on Baphomet Records. This never came to be, so The Reverend eventually recorded vocals over the music and put it out as a Tjolgtjar album on Dipsomaniac Records.
