After two CD single releases (Hollow Craving and Tears Of Deceipt), Finnish goth rockers Soulrelic (who are vocalist Tommy Suomala, guitarist Antza Talala, keyboardist Jay Hölli, bassist Pecu Talala and drummer Raymond Pohjola) have combined the four tracks featured on those original releases along with six others in the form of their debut long player Love Is A Lie We Both Believed.
My immediate impressions of the opening track Hollow Craving made me think of bands such as Sentenced, Poisonblack and Marble Arch. Soulrelic's style of melodic goth rock is a combination of all of those and probably a few more as well. The strength of the opening track is somewhat undone by the cheesy almost 80s like keyboards in Tears Of Deceit and the fact that the song as a whole doesn't stand up to repeated listens. The slow and melodic mood of Dying Angels directly contrasts the quicker and more dynamic Down On My Path which features an interesting and unexpected guitar intro. In fact, it's a track that could feature on any of Sentenced's more recent releases.
The Key doesn't offer anything to write home about. It's not that it's a bad song; it's just nothing special in the grand scheme of things. Kiss Of A Saint's saving graces are the dynamics around the song's tempo and a solid, melodic chorus. Offering up something very different to the rest of the album is the piano and vocal only ballad The Rain Of Sorrow which unexpectedly changes direction two thirds of the way through as the outtro is marked by an epic chord and lead guitar driven piece. The final three numbers Still Breathing, It's All So Easy and Burned To Ashes are all guilty of being somewhat along the lines of modern day Sentenced material - something isn't uncommon for the album as a whole either. But it's the final track Burned To Ashes that as guilty as it is, marks a classy and memorable finale to the album.
With this years demise of Sentenced, Soulrelic probably couldn't have timed their appearance on the scene any better as Love Is A Lie We Both Believed certainly continues some of the musical traits associated with the aforementioned band. Where they go from here will be the real test for the band's future but so far, they are not off to a bad start.
