SL. You ended up recording a track with the Finish Idols winner Hanna Pakarinen, that's not exactly a logical choice is it?
MD. Oh yes Hanna did an amazing job on the cover version! Nino my producer explained in the studio that the Finnish Idols cannot be compared with the German ones f.ex. (do not know others though) it is really about rock and metal there!! The latest winner Ari went straight to #1 for weeks and got platinum gold in same week, he looks like Axl rose from Guns and Roses somehow and they play heavy metal. So Hanna has always been in rock bands and writes songs and her voice was the only choice to imagine with her sexy warm timbre. We have seen Hanna on the TV. She does not only look gorgeous she has an extraordinary outstanding voice from the masses. Perfectly for my duet. Nino said he knows her and called Hanna and luckily she was in Hellsinki and had interest to work with me. What great luck for us! Iris and Markus already suggested a duet and were much happy that it worked out, she separates simply greatly to my voice and the atmosphere of the song and lovely Hanna has created a very sad and dark feeling which made people even cry because it is so touching she has made a fantastic job really ...
SL. You have said that the solo album will help you to break through the ordinary cycle of album, tour and break when you record a new album with End Of Green. Had it become that invasive in your life?
MD. The reason for this solo album is indeed the usual rhythm of album, tour, break. It was time for me to realize and record my own album and everything and fulfill my desires and musical dreams. For years I burned to realize this. And with AFM Records I could not only find a perfect home for my musical work, but also new friends. At the beginning many anxious letters of my fans with your question came. Please see it also through with my eyes. In the 16 years of band history with 5 official published albums is truly enough time for me in between them to record nevertheless and carry out my own musical paths without crossing others path or futures. And since I am the only with no job besides making my music and I hope all will understand this reasons , since music it is simply my life.
SL. In what sense do you think that your solo material is different to the material you have written for End Of Green?
MD. Well yes sure it is a couple of hundred times just pure straight in the face Michelle Darkness sounds this time no one talking into it no compromises no regrets not caring about others concerns about loving clichés or playing with them…which are sometimes exactly that charm or spirit and personal flair it really makes a song happening alive My Songs should always sound itself simply in such a way, as I would hear gladly music, if I had bought a CD... and for my money I spent also to fulfill the expectation I have had on the one...
SL. As the frontman it is a lot easier to market the release as well I suppose?
MD. Since I am not only the frontman singer I also play guitar and I am a main songwriter. I am always involved in the whole process of songwriting, recording, and just everything so I guess I am not the right one to answers this really since I'm a multi-Instrumentalist also on my solo record. It has never been that I just come to sing in the studio.
SL. All instruments in the studio were originally planned to be played by you. Now, you ended up using guest musicians after all...
MD. Haha, yeah, why not, it is great fun having friends around in the studio and when they come by have a couple of drinks and maybe more it happens that you start jamming and it turns out so awesome you just need to record it (laughs). Christian Hector and Nino played great guitars on these 2 songs and Mika Taurianen of Entwine did an awesome job in the "Hatethings" vocals which will be found on the limited Digipak edition as a bonus track and all press people and Darkness Army fans promised it is really worth the money having these outstanding song together with Mika as a bonus
SL. The material was produced by Nino Laurenne, if I'm not wrong he co-owns the studio where you recorded, no? What attracts you in his production work?
MD. Nino and Tero (Nightwish producer) and the Pasis, and all involved just did an amazing job with great tips and ideas on guitars, vocals and all. They filled the whole album with an outstanding warm Finnish sound timbre powered by a modern powerful ass kicking sound! And last but not least, the studio has a Finnish sauna (smiles).
SL. You recorded the Joy Division cover "Love will tear us apart"; I guess the fact that there is a Joy Division film coming out is part of the choice of this song?
MD. We did not even know at the time we were recording that there was a JD movie coming out... the song had chosen as a very deep and very big honest respect!, to honor one of the biggest legends with the biggest hymn kneeling down emotionally is in deepest respect before Ian Kevin Curtis/Joy
Division. They have begun a whole movement in their time, have foundation and laid milestones like a landmark. This cover is a quite big admiration and worship for me to them.
SL. Please explain your choice for Andy Death "Darklandcity"?
MD. Andy Death wrote this song especially for me. It is a great song, maybe some kinda hit? (smiles) Andy loves fantasy texts in the style of the horror cult fiction stuff à la John Sinclair.
SL. It has been a while since we heard something from End Of Green, I guess you guys are working on something new as you did play two new songs lately?
MD. We are rehearsing.... A part of my musically life will probably always be with EOG making music. We will always continue to meet also without stage lights and without stage.
