The album you hold in your hands is, to the cultural historian, like a newly discovered stamp that was printed on an island that sank long ago. Its existence is an enigma. The spectre of war hangs over the record like a dark cloud - the recording was created at the height of the Vietnam conflict, in which over one million American men were drafted and over fifty-eight thousand died. The known facts: The record was produced by the United States Army in 1971, and features the winners of a battle of the bands concert by Army servicemen. It was recorded in the studios of American Forces Network, in Frankfurt, Germany. The recording is of exceptional quality, made at a time when German recording gear was at the zenith of audio technology design. We know from the players' own words, on the track "california Dreamin'," that the musicians hailed from all corners of the United States, an unusual fact given that generically similar records of the period are largely nuanced by regional styles and attitudes. The master tapes have never been located. They may be lost forever, but, fortunately, the United States Army kept a single copy of the LP in an office somewhere in Germany, from which this reissue has been remastered. That's it.
One question forces another: What happened to East of Underground? And how many gifted musicians, before and after, were swept into anonymity by the vortex of global conflict? The soldiers herein not only served the US abroad in wartime, they left us with a compelling document that is a time capsule of American culture at the time of war - revealing none of its mysteries, containing none of its horrors, and answering none of our questions.
