Swedish funk and jazz trombone player Nils Landgren spent his formative years at the music college in Karlstad and at the university in Arvika studying classical trombone. He discovered improvisation after a meeting with jazz legends Bengt-Arne Wallin and Eje Thelin and moved to Stockholm, after which he toured with Swedish pop phenomena Björn Skifs ("Hooked on a Feeling"). Since then, Landgren has appeared on some 500 albums, including collections from artists as diverse as Herbie Hancock, ABBA, the Crusaders, and Wyclef Jean. He released his debut solo album (Planet Rock ) in 1983, followed by a string of successful titles including Streetfighter, You Are My Nr 1, Miles from Duke, Chapter 2, and Follow Your Heart. In 1992 he formed the Nils Landgren Funk Unit, which has released numerous recordings including Live in Stockholm, Fonk da World, 5,000 Miles, and Funky ABBA.
With his smoking, hard-hitting "Funk Unit", the man with the Red Horn has been responsible for a bunch of successful CDs over the past years. His concerts from Stockholm to Beijing have been met with ecstatic acclamation. In duo with pianist Esbjörn Svensson, he has elevated Swedish folk music to the level of subdued works of art. As the artistic director of the 2001 Berlin Jazz Festival, designed a state of the art presentation of Scandinavian trends and moods. In May 2002 Nils was honored with the "Tore Ehrling prize" by the Swedish Society Of Popular Composers for "His outstanding contribution to spread swedish jazz music around the globe". He is a world-class soloist and artist with heart and soul: Nils Landgren. Jazz and church music shaped his childhood. As cornetist, Nils Landgren's father brought US jazz into the house. The traditional Swedish chorales and songs came from his grandfather, who was a preacher. Nils Landgren was born in 1956. He began playing drums at the age of six. At 13 he layed his hands and lips on the trombone and was hooked for life. Between 1972 and 1978 Nils studied classical trombone at the music college in Karlstad with David Maytan and at the university in Arvika with Ingemar Roos. During this time he also met the legendary Swedish Folk-Jazz pioneer Bengt-Arne Wallin and the fantastic tromboneplayer and proffessor of the Graz Conservatory in Austria, Eje Thelin. These two men completely changed the way for Nils to go; from a strict classical player to an improviser with his own idea of what to play and why. After his graduation Nils moved to Stockholm to work as a professional tromboneplayer. First the life of a struggling jazz musician, making no money but gaining loads of experience. Then the call that totally changed his life: an offer to go on tour with Sweden's most successful pop star of that time Björn Skifs who at that time was at #1 in the US pop charts with "Hooked on a feeling". The money was ok, the vibes were cool and the band was simply great! Ever since that time Nils Landgren has been involved in a variety of music styles and projects. These include jazz, rock, soul, hip hop, big band’s, studio sessions, and by his own reckoning, at least 500 albums. Mostly, for natural reasons with Swedish artists but also with such internationals stars as ABBA, The Crusaders, Eddie Harris, Bernard "Pretty" Purdie and Herbie Hancock. Nils even plays on the first Wyclef Jean solo album, titled "Carnival". In 1981 Thad Jones invited the Swede into his new Bigband project "Ball of Fire", to take the lead-trombone chair. The band was built up around such great musicians as Jerome Richardson, Jerry Dodgion, Tim Hagans, Bobby Burgess, Roger Kellaway, Sahib Shihab, Dusko Goykovich, and Benny. "A fantastic band, sad that it did not work out in the end", Nils says about that expreience. Two years later Nils debut album "Planet Rock" was released, followed by "Streetfighter" in 1984, "You are my Nr 1" in 1985, "Miles from Duke" with Bengt-Arne Wallin in 1987, "Chapter Two 1", in 1987, "Chapter Two 2" and "Follow your heart" in 1989. Between 1985 and 1987 Nils also performed as actor, singer, trombonist, and dancer in over 360 performances of the Swedish "play of the year", SKAEL, as well as appearing in several TV-films as an actor. 1992 saw the first performances and recording of the Nils Landgren Unit; the recording was called "Red Horn", and was mixed by the legendary sound engineer Bruce Swedien. (re-release 2001 as "The First Unit", ACT 9292-2). That same summer the band performed at the "Playboy Jazzfestival" in Los Angeles, hosted by the great Bill Cosby. The final breakthrough outside of Scandinavia came first in 1994: it was at the Jazz Baltica Festival in Germany that the "Unit" became the "Funk Unit". The album "Live in Stockholm" (ACT 9223-2) with guest star Maceo Parker was released that year and was the foundation for the collaboration with Siegfried Loch and his young ACT label.

um das Werk mit einem unbekannten Ausgang zu beginnen. Für alle weniger Kunstbegabten gibt
es jetzt eine bessere Lösung, denn sie wirkt sofort und beweist auch beim männlichen Geschlecht
einen Sinn für Romantik. Hierzu einfach das neue Album von Nils Landgren in den CD-Spieler
legen, am besten im Autoradio, mit der Freundin auf die Motorhaube setzten, und der Abend ist
mehr als gerettet. Wieso? Landgren hat die Sterne zwar nicht an den Himmel gemalt, aber perfekt
vertont, denn ' The Moon, The Stars And You' ist ein Konzeptalbum über den Mond und die Sterne,
die man am besten zu Zweit begutachten sollte.
Der Mann mit der roten Posaune, oder mittlerweile auch der Professor mit der roten Posaune, stellt
uns eine Sammlung von Balladen vor, teils eigene, teils fremde Kompositionen, die er zusammen
mit Michael Wollny am Piano, Lars Danielsson am Bass und Rasmus Kihlberg am Schlagzeug
eingespielt hat. Landgren setzt seine Posaune sehr gezielt und sparsam ein, nicht wie einige
Trompeter, die einen regelrecht tot quälen können mit ihrem Instrument, aber das verbietet sich in
diesem Fall schon auf Grund der Thematik. Die sanfte Art wie der Schwede seine Posaune spielt
wirkt allein schon auf direktem Wege im Empfindungszentrum, aber wenn er zusätzlich noch seine
angenehm warme und zarte Stimme benutzt, wird man regelrecht gefangen genommen von den
Stücken. Es ist schwer zu beschreiben wieso, aber es ist kaum zu glauben, dass diese Stimme
einem 55-jährigem gehört.
Die richtige Mischung macht?s. Nils hält den Hörer bei der Stange indem er die Mond und Sterne
Thematik immer wieder variiert, so gibt es einige instrumentale Themen wie das peppige 'Joe?s
Moonblues' oder das eher langsame 'Moonriver' mit Akkordeon, ein Cover von Cat Stevens gleich
als Einstieg ('Moonshadow'), das sich mit Hintergrundchor heraushebende 'Stars In Your Eyes' von
Herbie Hankock oder das Stück von Joao Bosco, das uns den brasilianischen Nachthimmel
beschreibt ('Holofotes'). Zum krönenden Abschluss gibt es sogar ein Stück mit Orchester. Nicht zu
vergessen sind dabei die wunderschönen Balladen wie 'The Moon, The Stars And You' oder das
zusammen mit Caecilie Norby gesungene und deutlich melodischere 'Angels Of Fortune'. Jedes
Stück liefert eine eigene Welt und doch fügen sich alle zusammen in diese romantische Sicht des
Erdtrabanten und seinen funkelnden Freunden am Nachthimmel. 8.5/10

Dieses Album hat das Potenzial, um selbst den striktesten Sonnenanbeter mondsüchtig werden zu lassen. Posaunist Nils Landgren, der sich mit jedem Album besser als Sänger positioniert, beweist mit den zwölf Tracks, die alle dem Erdtrabanten gewidmet sind, sein glückliches Händchen bei der Repertoireauswahl: Das Spektrum reicht von "Moonshadow" (Cat Stevens) über "Moon River" (Henry Mancini) und "Please Don't Tell Me How The Story Ends" (Kris Kristofferson) bis hin zu "Stars In Your Eyes" (Herbie Hancock) und "Lost In The Stars" von Kurt Weill.
In den Arrangements spielt Landgren mit allen Schattierungen - ob in der swingenden, relativ traditionellen Eigenkomposition "Joe's Moonblues", wo er mit der Posaune alles im Griff hat, bei verträumten Balladen wie "Moon River" (mit Joe Galliano am Akkordeon) oder "Moonshadow", zu der seine fragile Kopfstimme bestens passt, oder in Stücken wie "The Moon's A Harsh Mistress" von Jimmy Webb mit der NDR Bigband und dem Kurt-Weill-Klassiker zum Finale, bei dem er mit dem Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in die Vollen geht.
Bei all dem unterstützen den schwedischen Meister viele hervorragende Begleitmusiker. Vor allem Pianist Michael Wollny macht, wie nicht anders zu erwarten, einen tollen Job. Aber auch Schlagzeuger Steve Gadd oder Bassist Lars Danielsson gehören zu den tragenden Säulen des Konzepts.
Mit diesem dritten Balladenalbum nach "Ballads" (1999) und "Sentimental Journey" (2002) landet "Lunar Orbiter" Landgren einen weiteren Volltreffer.

I knew of Landgren as an ace trombone player, of his association with Joe Sample's Jazz Crusaders and his own Funk Unit but somehow his talents as a ballad singer had passed me by which is why I welcome this new release.
To dedicate an album to the moon isn't totally original Frank gave us Moonlight Sinatra and Mel Tormé did Swingin' on the Moon. Landgren however, includes the stars too in the equation which gives him even more scope and room for originality.
The voice is pleasing - rather like Sting in his jazzier moments - with a husky edge to it ideally suited for standards such as Oh You Crazy Moon, Lost in the Stars and Till There Was You. I'm not quite sure how this latter title qualifies apart from the line There were birds in the sky. Please tell me if I'm missing something here! That aside, it's a great vocal track.
Instrumentally, Moon River has some nice slightly edgy trombone and Galliano's accordian brings almost a blue harp feel to it. Joe Sample and Steve Gadd push Nils along a bit on Joe's Moonblues.
Langdren himself wrote The Moon, the Stars and You, Moonshadow is a Cat Stevens tune, Jimmy Webb provided The Moon is a Harsh Mistress whilst Joao Bosco sang and played guitar on Holofotes.

Mit einer veritablen Starparade wartet Nils Landgren beim Nachfolge-Projekt seines 2002er-Balladen-Albums „Sentimental Journey“ auf: Michael Wollny, Ex-Crusader Joe Sample, Steve Gadd, Cæcilie Norby, Richard Galliano und João Bosco gastieren auf diversen Tracks, die NDR Bigband und das Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra liefern stellenweise große Klangkulissen. Oft will Landgren hier aber den persönlichen, intimen Ton in den Vordergrund stellen: So geht es vom zarten Intro aus Gallianos Akkordeon ganz zu Beginn bis zum Finale mit den Philharmonikern durch eine ganze Palette unterschiedlicher Besetzungen. Wollny ist auch Koautor des Titelstücks, zudem greift der umtriebige Schwede hier auch bewährtes Liedgut von Cat Stevens („Moonshadow“), Henry Mancini („Moon River“), Herbie Hancock, Kris Kristofferson, Kurt Weill und Jimmy Webb. Landgrens Zugriff auf das Material ist hinsichtlich der Arrangements in der Regel gediegen traditionell, er selbst tritt als Sänger stärker in Erscheinung denn als Posaunist. Und genau daran, ob sie Landgrens leicht heisere Stimme als charaktervoll oder als limitiert empfinden, wird sich für viele Hörer entscheiden, ob diese gepflegte Song-Kollektion punktet.

Trombonisten och sångaren Nils Landgren är en ytterst produktiv artist. Han är en flitig besökare i skivstudion och han turnerar regelbundet i olika formationer som med Bohuslän Big Band. Där han även en roll som konstnärlig ledare. Med sitt eget band Funk Unit spelar han en annan sorts musik, samma när han ansluter sig till Joe Samples Jazz Crusaders och annan aktivitet, som producent hos skivbolaget ACT.
Skivan som är dedikerad till Esbjörn Svensson är fylld av ballader. Där är Nils på sin mammas gata såväl instrumentalt som vokalt. Det visades redan på skivan Sentimental Journey för nio år sedan. Nils ramas här in av olika grupper. Från det lilla intima formatet med bland annat accordeonspelaren Richard Galliano samt NDR Big Band i Hamburg och Stockholms Filharmoniska Orkester. I den större omgivningen har ypperliga arrangemang skrivits av Vince Mendoza. Kärnan i Nils grupp är pianisten Michael Wollny, basisten Lars Danielsson och trumslagaren Rasmus Kihlberg. Meriterade special guests är pianisten Joe Sample, gitarristen och sångaren Joao Bosco, trumslagaren Steve Gadd samt sångerskan Caecilie Norby. Nils har producerat tillsammans med bolagets boss Siggi Loch.
I den omväxlande mjuka repertoaren ingår bland annat Cat Stevens Moonshadow, Jimmy van Heusens Oh You Crazy Moon, Henry Mancinis Moon River, Kurt Weils Lost In The Stars och Herbie Hancocks Stars In Your Eyes. Som albumstiteln anger har månen och stjärnorna en central position i sammanhanget.
