"A singer who deserves a listen . . . she is a lady with an
adventurous soul!" – George Benson
"Diane Hubka makes her way into a select group of jazz vocalists/instrumentalists, where she rightly assumes a place of honor." (ALL ABOUT JAZZ) Whether performing with a group, or accompanying herself solo on seven-string guitar, she is an engaging artist with an original sound. Diane moves easily through a program of lesser-known standards and bossa novas, whimsical tunes by Bob Dorough and Blossom Deary, to surprising originals, getting straight to the heart of a song with her remarkable musicianship, masterful phrasing, "clear-as-mountain-stream sound", (JAZZTIMES) and irresistible sense of swing.
Concord recording artist and one of the world's foremost 7-string players, Howard Alden says: "I think voice plus seven-string guitar is an ideal combination. It's rare to find someone who can perform with both single-handedly, but Diane does just that - beautifully!" ALL MUSIC GUIDE calls Diane Hubka "one of the top jazz vocalists of her generation."
Diane's Recordings have been well recieved in Japan, and she has toured there several times. Her newest CD, I Like It Here/Live in Tokyo, (SSJ-USA 2009) received a nomination for the prestigious Jazz Disc Award by SWING JOURNAL. "Hubka dazzled the Japanese audience with her intelligent improvisations, understated emotions and energy." (EASTWIND IMPORT.) With overseas tours in Turkey & Japan and club appearances throughout the U.S., she continues winning the international acclaim that began when her first CD, Haven't We Met, was released on the Dutch Challenge/A-Records label in 1999. It featured the legendary alto sax player Lee Konitz, and garnered a Jazz Award Nomination for "Best Recording Debut."
A vital member of New York City's jazz scene for two decades, the award-winning vocalist relocated to Hollywood in 2004, where she collaborated with pianist Christian Jacob (Maynard Ferguson, Tierney Sutton,) to record Diane Hubka Goes to the Movies, (18th & Vine, USA; SSJ Records, Japan; 2007.) JAZZTIMES heralded its "winning results" and ALL ABOUT JAZZ declared, "Hubka has created an entirely new songbook all her own." Her third CD, You Inspire Me, (VSOJAZ 2002) was a personal tribute to her love of jazz guitar, with seven of the world's top virtuoso guitarists playing on alternate cuts.
This Blue Ridge Mountain-bred artist grew up in Western Maryland in a musical family and learned violin, trombone and guitar from an early age. After college she moved to Washington, DC where she frequented local jazz clubs Blues Alley, One Step Down and Mr. Y's Soul Kitchen, absorbing the sounds of local legends Charlie Byrd and Shirley Horn, hearing national acts, as well as honing her own skills in those rooms. In 1986 she moved to New York City and was awarded a one-year jazz fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts for private study with vocalist Anne Marie Moss. She also studied piano, voice and guitar privately with premier NY jazz artists Barry Harris, Harold Danko, Connie Crothers, Sheila Jordan, Jay Clayton, Howard Alden and John Hart.
Diane Hubka has recorded and/or performed with jazz luminaries Lee Konitz, Bucky Pizzarelli, Harold Danko, Anthony Wilson, Paul Bollenback, Frank Kimbrough, John Hart, John Pisano, Gene Bertoncini, Joe LaBarbera, Carl Saunders, Larry Koonse, and the Brazilian Trio Da Paz. She headlined in major jazz clubs appearing in New York's Blue Note, Birdland and Knitting Factory, the Central PA Jazz Festival, the Philadelphia Guitar Show, Washington D.C.'s Blues Alley, Soloist with the Western MD Symphony; Jazz Corner in Hilton Head, SC, and LA's Jazz Bakery, Steamers LACMA, Vitello's and Charlie O's. In March 2008 she headlined at Nardis Jazz Club in Istanbul, Turkey. In Japan she appeared at JZBrat, Tokyo TUC, Cotton Club, Satin Doll, Jazz on Top, Jazz Inn Lovely and Life Time Cafe.
Diane Hubka accepts students for private instruction and conducts workshops on jazz improvisation. In January 2005 she moderated a panel at the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) Conference, titled "The Voice / Instrument Connection."
This is Washington, D.C.-based Diane Hubka's second album for the Netherlands' A-Records. Even more so than on her first album, she avoids the classic standards favored by many contemporary singers. Instead, the playlist is dominated by "off-beat" songs, i.e., tunes that don't get that much recording attention even though they were composed by well-known writers like Richard Rodgers, Jobim, and Jules Styne. This is risky, requiring a lot of confidence to pull it off. Hubka obviously has this confidence, because this is as entertaining an album as has hit the streets for quite a while, and it doesn't have a single bad track. "In Walked John," Malachi Thompson's lyrical tribute to John Coltrane, is one of the highlights. Hubka's delivery is straightforward but compelling, while everyone gets an opportunity to stretch out to pay their homage to Coltrane. Especially commanding is Scott Whifield's trombone solo and Frank Kimbrough's piano. Kimbrough's piano is the grout which keeps everything in place on this recording session. "Never Never Land" (somewhere between Oz and Wonderland, it sounds like), has a fairy tale aura about it. Along with Hubka's delicate phrasing, there's an extended solo by guitarist John Hart with Tony Moreno's drums providing energetic punctuation in support. Hubka shows that she is no slouch with a guitar as she honors one of her mentors, Bob Dorough, on "Small Day Tomorrow." With Hart's guitar dispensing complementary chords, Hubka goes into the blues with Hoagy Carmichael's "Baltimore Oriole." Meredith d'Ambrosio, another singer who explores distinctive material, is recognized as Hubka performs her composition "August Moon." There are many other musical virtues here which make this an attractive disc, not the least of which is Hubka's pleasant, crystal-clear voice, as well as her impeccable phrasing and the spirited interplay between Hubka and the ensemble. But perhaps most critical is the balance she strikes between straight singing and wordless vocalizing and scatting. She doesn't scat on every tune, but when she does, it becomes a tasteful contribution to the lyrical message she is conveying. This album is highly recommended. ~ Dave NathanJazzTimes
