Жила-была в Канаде молодая классическая пианистка по имени Джейн Баннетт. Жила себе, никого не трогала, училась в своем Торонто. Довелось ей как-то побывать в Калифорнии. Услыхала она там Чарльза Мингуса и Роланда Кирка, и осенило её, и открылся ей мир джаза. И пошла она учицца к бопщикам да блюзменам – пианисту Барри Харрису, флейтистам Джеймсу Ньютону, Фрэнку Вессу и Джеймсу Муди. А потом услыхала она авангардного Стива Лэйси – и вот, опять ей откровение было. И дали ей степуху казённую, и поехала она до городу Парижу осваивать сопрано-сакс под его чутким руководством. И писалась она себе с разными американскими и канадскими именитыми пост-бопщиками, и в ус не дула, за неимением такового, а дула поочерёдно во флейту и во сопрано в саксофон. И вышла она замуж за любимого человека, канадского трубача Ларри Крамера, и повез ее молодожён в променад на остров Кубу... ну и всё. Человек опять попал. Хотя мы здесь её, конечно же, поймём Такая вот история постадийного излечения от хронического классицита методом свингования Подсев на латинскую музыку, мадам трудолюбиво осваивает материал, и вскоре собирает состав, с мужем и канадским басистом, остальные – как есть кубинцы. "Spirits of Havana" (1991) влетает в 300-ку джазовых альбомов всех времен и народов и получает премию JUNO, а сама мадам получает погоняло "Гавана Джоана". Все ее дальнейшие "кубинские" и "бразильские" (равно как и пост-боповые) альбомы также очень тепло принимаюцца критикой и слушателями. На Кубе Баннетт огорчило плохое состояние материальной базы тамошних музыкальных учебных заведений, и она мобилизует в Канаде добровольцев, которые деляцца запчастями и/или едут на Кубу ремонтировать людям инструменты. Из этой инициативы вырос целый некоммерческий фонд поддержки культурных связей со странами «Третьего мира». Еще один кубинский альбом получает JUNO – "Ritmo+Soul" (2001). Имел успех снятый с ее участием документальный фильм "Spirits of Havana". Ну, и альбомы пишуцца, понятное дело – всех трех мастей. А за них и за прочие красивые культурные глаза всякие премии дают, звания почётные, и даже орден в 2005 г. дали – за вклад в культуру Канады... послушайте соло американца Ховарда Джонсона на тубе на альбоме 2005 г. (еще одна премия JUNO) "Radio Guantanamo Blues..." – и, я думаю, вы одобрите решение канадского правительства Кстати, Джонсон тогда был уже седым ветераном – он когда-то одним из первых начал использовать тубу как солирующий инструмент в джазe... но ето уже другая песня, и такие песни можно спеть про многих соавторов Баннетт, в том числе и кубинских. В общем, хорошая такая белая тетка. Побольше бы таких! [...] Не буду говорить здесь об отдельных альбомах – послушайте сами, я думаю, многое вам понравицца. Jane Bunnett, a talented flutist and soprano saxophonist from Canada, has consistently cut through red tape and bureaucracy in order to perform with Cuban musicians. For this project, Bunnett puts the focus on a pair of talented Cuban pianists (Jose Maria Vitier and Frank Emilio Flynn), performing in a variety of settings that also sometimes include bassist Carlitos del Puerto. The leader actually sits out on three of the ten songs. As strong as the playing is (and the interplay between Bunnett and the pianists is consistently delightful), the rich melodies (five by Vitier, one from Flynn and four obscurities) are most memorable. Influenced by classical music and the pianist's Cuban heritage, the highly appealing themes stick in one's mind long after the CD is finished. Several of the tunes could very well catch on as standards in the future, if enough musicians hear this CD. Recommended, as are all of Jane Bunnett's recordings to date.

Afro-Cuban music offers the flute one of its few opportunities to shed its prim and proper persona and cut loose. Here four maestros joined forces in a recording studio in Havana during a three-day session: noted jazz flautist Jane Bunnett; two major forces in the history of Cuban music, "Maraca" and Richard Egues; the former's protegé, Céline Vallé. Nonpareil Latin jazz pianist Hilario Duran provides an inventive, solid underpinning and works with the percussion section to set grooves that just don't quit, while the flutes soar exultantly above it all.

How does Bunnett create such a rootsy, authentic Cubano sound? Simple: she uses excellent Cuban musicians. This spirited album is brimming with bright rhythms and delicious melodies. And Bunnett's soprano sax offers a nice, lighthearted voice at the musical core. You can sense the positive energy created in the studio.

Spirituals & Dedications is a nod to a period in music's history when jazz reflected a strong connection to the church and its musical repertoire. This modern interpretation of the beauty and simplicity of the traditional hymn is brought to life by an eclectic collaboration among Jane Bunnett, Stanley Cowell, Larry Cramer, Mark McLean, Kieran Overs, and Dewey Redman. Together they perform the music of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Charles Mingus, as well as several original compositions by members of the collective. Saxophonist Jane Bunnett has composed a remarkable tribute to pianist Don Pullen with "Don's Light," a slow, tranquil church mode that reflects the strong connection to the natural spirituality of the piano's white keys as played by Stanley Cowell and the gospel-tinged voice of Dean Bowman. "A Laugh for Rory" has an ingenious arrangement featuring Bunnett on flute and Dewey Redman on tenor saxophone with mutual impact by bassist Kieran Overs and Mark McLean on drums. The doctrine of effects is clearly present on this recording. For those seeking a different musical perspective on traditional hymns and the relationship between spirituality and emotions or jazz and gospel, look no further.

Jane Bunnett's Red Dragonfly (aka Tombo) is one of those rare projects that may not be original in conception, but in execution becomes a great achievement. Bunnett and her band -- Larry Cramer, trumpet and flügelhorn; Kieran Overs, acoustic bass; David Virelles, piano; Mark McLean, drums -- team with the Penderecki String Quartet on a set that almost exclusively features startlingly fresh jazz revisions of songs from various world traditions. Each tune here was chosen not for its ability to be re-created in the jazz idiom, but simply for its subjective meaning to Bunnett. Simply put, this may be the most personal recording Bunnett has ever issued. Originally conceived as a set of folk songs to be performed as a soprano saxophone showcase (which is all she plays here), the process mutated into something more. These tunes retain their melodies and their heart, but they also become something more in this rich, sonorous atmosphere with lush, adventurous harmonies and deep, focused lyricism and rhythmic invention. There isn't a weak moment on this disc, but there are some standouts. "Black Is the Color (Of My True Love's Hair)" nods to Coltrane's read of "My Favorite Things," with expansive modal strings just above the rhythm section. The title track is derived from Kosaku Yamada's 1921 standard with its haunting string and piano intro. When Bunnett enters with the melody, she strikes the balance between East and West. The band redoes "Divule Oni" from Spirits of Havana with a radically different arrangement, one that showcases the melody over the rhythm and allows the strings to paint the gap. The South African folk song "Nkosi Sikelel'i Africa," with its dirgelike cadence and the strings playing an extrapolated harmony in unison with Bunnett's soprano, is just plain beautiful. But the finest selection is her gorgeous and deeply moving version of the late Jim Pepper's "Witchi-Tai-To" (derived from a Native American peyote chant), with dynamite playing from pianist Virelles. Bunnett's restrained, understated use of the melody in the head and in her solo brings to bear all the history Pepper was drawing from in his composition, as the strings shimmer through the background. The effect is one of heartbreaking beauty and grace. In sum, Bunnett and her band have once again shown exquisite taste, and have upped the bar of artistic excellence and integrity with a simply stunning set.

On this intriguing set, flutist and soprano saxophonist Jane Bunnett explores music from the Guantánamo region of Cuba, music originally brought to the area from Haiti and West Africa. Bunnett's group infuses the exciting styles with jazz improvising and, due to the inclusion of Jumpin' Johnny Sansone on guitar, harmonica, accordion, and vocals, a dose of the blues and New Orleans rhythms. There is a great deal of variety to this set, ranging from the folkloric music of the voice and percussion ensembles Grupo Changui de Santiago and Grupo Changui de Guantanamo to the brilliant tenor saxophone playing of Dewey Redman, the contributions of Howard Johnson on tuba, and Bunnett's regular group with trumpeter Larry Cramer. While some numbers are dominated by vocals, even those pieces generally include interplay with the horns. For jazz listeners, the instrumentals are of greatest interest, as is the mixture of styles and idioms. Highly recommended.

Canadian Jane Bunnett has distinguished herself as a soprano saxophonist and composer over a long period. Following her collaborations with the late pianist Don Pullen she was drawn to Cuban music, so she regularly incorporated it into her compositions and frequently used Cuban instrumentalists and vocalists. This session is a bit different from her earlier dates, as its main focus is on the Afro-Cuban/Haitian ten-voice a cappella choir Grupo Vocal Desandann, who piqued her interest with their inventive harmonies and ability to handle challenging rhythms. These spring 2008 sessions feature traditional Cuban and Haitian songs and originals by Bunnett with various lyricists, along with an original plus a surprising arrangement by fellow Canadian Don Thompson, who alternates between bass, piano, vibes, and marimba. Bunnett co-wrote the tricky "Kaleidoscope" with lead vocalist Kellylee Evans, a rhythmically complex piece with many sudden chord changes that Evans and the musicians master easily. Bunnett's lighthearted soprano and pianist David Virelles are briefly featured in the traditional piece "Wongolo," a showcase for Grupo Vocal Desandann. "If You Go Away" (written by Jacques Brel and poet Rod McKuen) is hardly the kind of piece that one would expect to hear on a jazz date, let alone a Cuban-flavored session, but Thompson's infectious arrangement and Molly Johnson's Billie Holiday-flavored vocal carry the day. Jane Bunnett continues to prove that jazz readily absorbs the best elements of any form of music with this fine effort.

Cuban music has long been the love of Canadian soprano saxophonist and flutist Jane Bunnett, as she has explored it throughout most of her career. But Cuban Rhapsody is a special project since it pairs her with the gifted Cuban pianist Hilario Durán, as they explore a wide range of individual styles in a duo setting. Their match proves to be a magical affair, as they offer performances that are lively yet intimate, adventurous yet lyrical. Bunnett begins on soprano sax for Miguel Matamoros' bittersweet "Lágrimas Negras" (Black Tears), switching to flute for a playful romp through his "Son de la Loma." They interpret two tunes by Ernesto Lecuona (composer of the well-known "Tabu"), offering a heartfelt take of "Maria la O" and a loping, cowboy-flavored setting of "Danza Lucumi," both featuring Bunnett's emotional sax and Durán's inventive piano. The pianist penned "New Danzón," but this updated version eclipses his earlier trio recording with Bunnett's powerful flute providing the perfect accompaniment. "Sherezada" is a bit different from the remaining songs as it briefly adds voices (which aren't credited), though Durán's brilliant improvising steals the show. Lovers of Cuban music will be overjoyed with the duo's consistently rewarding performances, which will easily stand the test of time.

There has been a constant stimulating fascination associated with Cuba that has attracted numerous jazz musicians to delve deeper into its musical traditions. Also, judging by the amount of recent recordings by Cuban artists, and those who feature them in collaborative efforts, the island sustains its status as a vital source of inspiration on the global jazz scene. Cuba captivated saxophonist/flautist Jane Bunnett many years ago, eventually leading her to form the all-female group Maqueque in 2013, culminating in a well received, self-titled record the following year. Oddara expands upon the Afro-Cuban format established on the first record, and further exhibits the collective talent which comprises the group. The clever utilization of upbeat vocal dynamics opens the set with "Little Feet," Bunnett entwining her soprano around the joyous chorus led by Melvis Santa, augmented by the deft violin work of Elizabeth Rodriguez. The light hearted direction continues on the "Dream," which takes a surprising turn into a Cuban son. The essential clave introduces the rumba oriented "El Chivo," Bunnett switching over to flute for a distinct charanga feel. Kudos on this track to pianist Danae Olano, who establishes her credentials as a formidable player with an expert grasp of the montuno, and percussionist Magdelys Savigne, a superb rumbera in her own right. They slip into a modern groove on "25 New Moves," and as the surprise of the project, Leon Russell's classic "Song For You," is given a fresh atmospheric arrangement, courtesy of lead vocalist Dayme Arocena, and an inspiring vocal choir backing. "Power of Two," is a reflective study of Cuban Santeria, and the perennial danzon is realized on "La Flamenca Maria," immersed in traditional Spanish splendor and grace. This is a tale of a gypsy fortune teller, a mysterious woman with strange powers to predict the romantic future. The Caribbean syncopation of "Eulogy," has Bunnett stepping into the improvisational spotlight with her sax, as the vocals take it back to the streets of La Habana. In the Santeria religion, the deity Eleggua, is one of the most powerful, recognized as the opener of doors and also as a trickster. "Trés Golpes -Pa Eleggua," is a three part mini-suite, which traverses the spiritual plane with determination in honor of this transcendent being. The rural roots of the folkloric changui rhythms dominate "Changui del Guaso," where pianist Olano again demonstrates her ability to propel the melody against the fierce vocal and percussion onslaught. The famous Cuban coffee "Café Pilon," is the subject of the final track, performed with street carnival flair and attitude, and with a strong dose of humor. Though Jane Bunnett is obviously the leader, the ladies of Maqueque are a powerful ensemble which can play this music with the authority required. In Cuba, music is intrinsically connected with culture and heritage, the contagious rhythms and vocal incantations being a way of life celebrated with each performance. Bunnett has immersed herself into this phenomenon, and has put it on full display with this production, as the adventure continues.
