“Josh Ritter Makes Dependable Heartland Roots-Rock on Fever Breaks
Josh Ritter’s prolific consistency has always been a blessing and a burden. The ten mostly-great roots-rock albums he’s released since the turn of the century have helped foster a uniquely supportive fanbase. And yet, it has been over a decade since any of his new records, which continue to impress as much as his earlier work, have made any sort of larger cultural mark. “At last, her combination of age and consistency has caught up with her,” read an apt Pitchfork essay on the lack of attention the reliably great Lucinda Williams has received in her late career, “enabled by our obsessive ability to track what’s new and seemingly important at the expense of what’s familiar though no less powerful.” A similar sentiment might be applied to Ritter.
Fever Breaks, the latest work from the 42 year-old singer-songwriter, blazes no new emotional or musical ground. And yet the album, coming after the rare lackluster offering, 2017’s Gathering, feels like a vital career summation, a survey course sampler in a word-swilling artist’s narrative gifts and endearing empathy.
The album is produced by Jason Isbell, an admirer who understands the ins and outs of what Ritter is striving for at his best. It’s a well-suited pairing: Ritter sounds recharged on the Tom Petty heartland stampedes of “Ground Don’t Want Me” and “Old Black Magic.” He is bitterly inquisitive when singing about the desecrated state of the American project, either in the form of folk-revival protest (“All Some Kind of Dream”) or “Girl in the War”-style allegory (“The Torch Committee”). He is perhaps at his best when he’s full-grin reflecting on the folksy heart-bursts of “On the Water and “I Still Love You (Now and Then).” On the latter, he finds fresh ways to mine the same type of emotional terrain of post-breakup grace he explored on 2013’s Beast in its Tracks.
“You must become a new man,” Ritter sings. Over the past several years, he’s become fascinated in self-change as a lyrical trope. It makes sense: a songwriter as dependable as Ritter can easily fall victim to retreading past ground as the years roll on. But Fever Breaks is a moving exercise in reshuffling and restating what a long-time talent does best in a just-new-enough guise. (Jonathan Berstein, Rolling Stone, 26.04.2019)

An American singer/songwriter with a strong voice, a keen wit, and an evocative way with words, Josh Ritter has built a loyal following as one of the leading lights on the contemporary folk scene. Born in Idaho, Ritter bought his first guitar after hearing the Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash classic “The Girl from the North Country.” While attending college in Oberlin, Ohio, Ritter got his first taste of the music of Leonard Cohen and Gillian Welch; he instantly fell in love with their songs and dropped his neuroscience major in favor of the pursuit of music. As home to classic folk venues like Club Passim, Boston, was the place Ritter chose to follow his dream. He recorded and released his self-titled debut in 1999, but it was 2002’s The Golden Age of Radio that got him noticed by both critics and folk fans. Selling copies of the disc on his own funded Ritter’s touring, while successful tours in turn funded more albums, and so on. Signature Sounds Recordings soon picked up the rights to The Golden Age of Radio; their reissue gave it exposure on a national level, and the four- and five-star reviews started rolling in. The HBO series Six Feet Under grabbed a track from the album for their end credits, while Ritter received an offer to open for the Frames on a tour of Ireland. Soon his single “Me & Jiggs” was in the Irish Top 40, a headlining tour of the country was sold out, and a tribute band named Cork was playing nothing but Ritter material in numerous Irish pubs. Back home, Ritter’s following was growing with sold-out shows in New York City and Boston, while an invitation to the Sundance Film Festival helped begin 2003 on a high note.
In February 2003, Ritter spent 14 days in rural France at Black Box Studios (where much of the gear originally equipped Curtis Mayfield’s studio in Chicago). The result, Hello Starling, was released in September of the same year. The success of The Golden Age of Radio and Hello Starling attracted the attention of the major labels, and Ritter signed with V2 in time for the release of 2006’s The Animal Years. Ritter’s tenure with V2 was brief, and after releasing a CD/DVD concert album, In the Dark: Live at Vicar Street, through an Irish label in April 2007, he hooked up with the BMG-distributed Victor Records, which issued the rock-oriented The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter in August 2007. The hard-touring Ritter dropped two more live discs in 2008, Live at the 9:30 Club and Live at the Record Exchange, and he opted to eliminate his problems with record labels by forming one of his own, Pytheas Recordings. Pytheas issued the album So Runs the World Away in 2010, and when Ritter published his first novel, Bright’s Passage, through the Dial Press in 2012, Pytheas issued a special box set of Ritter reading his own novel, accompanied by an EP of songs inspired by the book. Ritter returned to music with 2013’s The Beast in Its Tracks, an album inspired by his divorce, and he traveled to New Orleans to work with producer and engineer Trina Shoemaker for his 2015 release Sermon on the Rocks. In July, 2017 Ritter issued the single “Showboat” in anticipation of the release of his ninth studio long-player, Gathering, which arrived later that September via Pytheas Recordings/Thirty Tigers. The prolific singer/songwriter returned in 2019 with his tenth full-length effort, Fever Breaks, which was produced by Jason Isbell, and backed by Isbell’s band the 400 Unit. (Mark Deming, AllMusic)
The follow-up to 2017’s loose and versatile Gathering, Fever Breaks sees the lauded Idaho-bred singer/songwriter teaming up with producer and Americana wunderkind Jason Isbell and delivering a taut ten-track set backed by Isbell and his formidable 400 Unit. Less prone to stylistic detours than previous outings, Fever Breaks is a straight-up band album, with Ritter and company administering some serious muscle on cuts like “Old Black Magic” and “Losing Battles,” the latter of which gives off a distinct Crazy Horse vibe. Dylanesque opener “Ground Don’t Want Me” takes a similar approach, but retains a modicum of heartland folksiness, bringing it more in line with Ritter’s earlier works. Things take a more bucolic and less propulsive turn on “On the Water” and “I Still Love You (Now and Then),” the former a Springsteen-y, road trip-ready love song, and the latter a heartfelt, rear-view mirror ode to a love long gone. Ritter has always been a deft lyricist, and Fever Breaks is rife with both poetic (“I wanna lay down in a field of bone, but an angel guards the garden”) and prudent (“There was a time when we were them, just as now they all are we”) observations of the human condition. A trad-folk singer at heart, Ritter has no qualms about getting political, taking on holding pens filled with refugee children on the contrastingly sunny-sounding “All Some Kind of Dream,” and caustic tribalism on the satirical “Torch Committee.” Throughout, the 400 Unit, specifically Amanda Shires, who provides soaring harmonies and some truly emotive violin work, adds considerable sonic heft to the proceedings, and help to imbue Ritter’s workmanlike folk-rock narratives with the kind of studio finesse that sometimes eludes him when left to his own devices.
