As a fiddler and vocalist, Carolanne Pegg (then billed as Carole Pegg) was an important part of Mr. Fox, a notable if cultish early-'70s British folk-rock group. On her 1973 self-titled album, however, she simply sounds both out of her element and ill-equipped to carry a record as a solo artist. Her voice is thin and wavering, and the material is often far less folk-oriented than Mr. Fox's, veering toward mainstream early- to mid-'70s singer/songwriting with some country-rock touches and a mystical air. While a song title such as "A Witch's Guide to the Underground" might whet the appetite for something truly hellacious, in the event it turns out to be a prissy tune, sung with all the confidence of a woman stepping onto a frozen pond whose ice may or may not hold. More of her folk roots surface in the dark British melodies of "The Sapphire" and "Fair Fortune's Star"; "Man of War," which sounds like a Sandy Denny song with lousy (and very un-Denny-like) vocals; and the fiddle-driven "Mouse and the Crow." Those are more satisfying than the straight and unmemorably ordinary rock tunes here, but are still way short of outstanding.

The songs represent the chrysalis-type situation I found myself in, having left Mr.Fox amid controversy and passion, and illustrate the beginnings of my own voyage of self-discovery. My grief comes through clearly in songs such as The Sapphire and Winter People. l had started busking in the London underground (A Witch's Guide to the Underground) and had an interest in mystical things. For instance, having driven through the night to Glastonbury after doing a London gig, I sat and watched the dawn from the top of the Tor (The Lady and the Well); and l was inspired by an eery place I visited that had links with the story of Jane Eyre (Wycoller). But the lady's difficult journey through the dark wood in Fair Fortune's Star and her arrival at the stile on the other side is highly symbolic, as is the determination of the Mouse and the Crow (l'll get there, by and by). Part of my journey involved learning what I did and didn't want in a relationship (Man of War, The Lizard) and the value of friends (Open the Door). Clancy's Song is about both my daughter and myself. lt's an up-beat country number recognising our aspirations for adventure and prefiguring my travels in Mongolia. Clancy has now started a band (Crac), writes songs and music, and plays keyboards and bass. ln style, some of my songs look back to Mr Fox (in their use of traditional themes and motifs) but they're also experimental. It was wonderful to work with such lirst~rate musicians, great to have the space to develop my own song-writing, and fun putting the album together at Rockfield. The last song recognises that neither time nor person stands still. Although it seemed like winter, spring was just round the corner.

Carolanne Pegg was one of the great but over-looked talents of the Seventies, a singer and song-writer who created her own, very special and highly original brand of British folk-rock, and never had the breaks she deserved. She was constantly struggling, constantly producing great material, and often seemed to be on the edge of a major break-through that never quite came. She may have never enjoyed great commercial success, but she made some truly great albums, including this solo set from back in I973. lt's remarkable partly both because of the quality of much of the song-writing and the self-assured playing, and because of the circumstances in which it was produced. When it was released, Carolanne was working as a switchboard operator for a computer firm, coping with the aftermath of divorce, looking after her nine year-old daughter, and worrying about where to live. In the previous year she had had supplemented her earnings as a singer by working as a waitress and busking in South Kensington tube station - where of course she was moved on. She also had to cope with the disappointment of having been a member of a much-praised band that never quite made it. Mr Fox, which she formed with her then-husband Bob Pegg, was surely the most English of all the folk-rock bands that emerged in the late Sixties and early Seventies. They came from Yorkshire, were influenced by the music that they heard in the Dales - anything from hymns to early pop - and from this they developed a style of their own.вЂЁThese were new songs of the English countryside, and were exhilarating, haunting and mysterious. Bob and Carole (as she was then known) both shared the vocals, and the band were driven on by Carole's fiddle playing. It seemed that they were on the verge of greater national, and perhaps international success, when Bob and Carole split up. So too did Mr Fox.

After releasing two excellent albums with her then husband Bob Pegg, Carole Pegg recorded this stunningly good solo album under the name Carolanne Pegg. Like far too many albums of the period, it remained virtually unknown to the record buying public, and Carole was reduced to singing and playing her violin in London tube stations to help make ends meet. Nick Drake's work was similarly ignored. Will Carole's music ever get the recognition it deserves? The availability of the Mr Fox albums, and this one, bring her music to today's audience. Unlike much of the Mr Fox material, this album sounds strangely undated to my ears. It seems to have a timeless quality to it; unlike a lot of older recordings, listening to it is a good musical experience. I didn't know what to expect when I bought it, having never heard any of her music, but I was very quickly persuaded of its excellence and I have played it many times. Carole's voice and musical style is very English; Mr Fox were influenced by the Velvet Underground and traditional Yorkshire folk music, and whilst she is very clearly working in a folk (or folk rock) framework, the music sounds more modern, to my ears, than that of Fairport Convention. Her voice is excellent, and very distinctive. I think the album is really excellent, and it's rumoured that she is planning something of a comeback, after a gap of over 30 years. In the meantime, we can listen to this, while we wait!
