Lake Forest is the introspective and sometimes melancholic folk music of Will Whitwham, singer and songwriter of the Wilderness of Manitoba. Last winter, in between tours with the band, Whitwham decided to write and record a song per day and see how long it took to get something he felt could be a snapshot of a period in time. The winter was a catalyst as every season can be. “I’m always moved the most by music that is really emotive above all else because that’s the only way I find it can really stay with and sometimes haunt you.”
After that, Whitwham wanted to send it out to a few close friends to hear their thoughts. Then, once revisiting it all, he wanted to put it out because he felt that the songs formed a real cohesiveness through this challenge; as though they could only be released if they were all together. It definitely captures the mood he was in and the sounds he really wanted to be creating at the time. He always prefers listening to a whole album by someone because then you get a wider perspective or series of moments rather than just one of them.
The Lake Forest name came from a place or a number of places that felt synchronistic, both internally and externally. One is the place in Illinois that Whitwham had read about in a book that moved him – Dave Egger’s “A Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius”. Another is the name of a road up north near a place where his family has had a cottage since 1979 and is the only place he has recurring dreams of throughout his life. The last was an image in his mind of a frozen ground surrounded by evergreens. “This came to me in the form of a beautiful photograph a good friend of mine took which immediately became the album cover. It was very cold, surreal and moving all at once”.
While remaining a member of the Wilderness of Manitoba, Lake Forest will always be an ongoing creative outlet for Whitwham whenever the mood and ideas come around. What separates Lake Forest is that it takes on a more sombre, melancholic tone with more sparse arrangements. “I also feel like there is more room to experiment in playing with what exactly that ‘sound’ is when I’m on my own. It ultimately delves much further into the introspective songwriter territory rather than the collaborative band dynamic. I started making music alone and always find myself returning to it and creating that way again. I’m writing all the time and can never really fit it all into one project because I feel like there is so much music out there.”.

Listening to Silver Skies is like curling up and dreaming one of the most vivid dreams you’ve ever experienced. Will Whitwham, a member of the Wilderness of Manitoba is the man behind Lake Forest and manages to concoct a wonderful album with little more than a guitar and some very, very, dreamy vocals.
The guitar/vocal setup is certainly nothing new in the world of music, but I don’t believe I’ve ever heard it done the way Whitwham has done it. The guitar is the (mostly) constant element of the music of Silver Skies. It is simple yet effective in conjuring moods from melancholy to serenity.
Those who have been following Lake Forest’s progress may already be familiar with the first single from the album, “Autumn Skies.” It’s a lush song that shows off Whitwham’s unadorned-yet-potent vocals amid a landscape of guitar picking. It nicely follows the opening instrumental track “Cathedral.”
The following song “Whispers” shows that barebones guitar picking can be just as powerful as steady strumming. The song feels slower, kind of like an afternoon before it fades into evening and then night. “Escape the Moon” echoes that same feeling of something slowly approaching.
Now to get into the melancholy. “Untitled” is one of the most spooky songs. What sounds like reminiscing takes a sharp twist as Whitwham sings the refrain. The use of minor chords in “Birds of Prey” makes for the most blatantly sad song.
The closing track “The Autumn Will Set the Land on Fire” is one track that breaks ranks from the others. Starting instead with a piano riff (there’s also a bit if piano in “Silver Stars”) and then transitioning into a more straightforward strumming pattern, this song shows an experimental side. The roughly six-and-a-half-minute song later incorporates multiple tracks of Whitwham singing to create some chaos.
There’s a lot going on during Silver Skies despite the minimal instrumentation, and it’s an emotional piece that will likely mean something totally different to each person that listens.
As a final note, my mother really liked “Autumn Skies” the first time she heard it many months ago and I decided to let her listen to Silver Skies before I did. Here’s what she had to say about it:
The music is very deep and introspective. It is obviously deeply personal to Will Whitwham and it feels as if the songs were written with great emotion. Each song strikes a different emotional response to the listener – at times sad (such as “Untitled”); sometimes feelings of calm and peacefulness, sometimes just restful and soothing. His vocals are minimalistic but, that, coupled with the sounds of the guitar chords, are quite powerful.
The album is available today on Verité records.

Will Whitwham first gained recognition as songwriter in The Wilderness Of Manitoba, a folk troupe that – as seen from this promotional video – really muses after nature. Taking inspiration from the trees, animals, breezes and soil is actually more direct of a conduit for universality than singing about love; it’s a constant that most humans cannot readily ignore and an escape for those of us feeling particularly disconnected between the grey shades of urbanity. While it’s a valid argument to state that few genres are as adept at conveying the rustic reality of our surroundings quite like folk, one can’t help but acknowledge that it was an oversaturation of natural imagery that facilitated the death of new age.
With The Wilderness Of Manitoba already carrying so much feel-good, post-hippie sentiment, Whitwham’s chosen moniker of Lake Forest suggested, if not an overbearing allegiance to doe-eyed solemnity, a perversion of art’s most resilient muse. Luckily Silver Skies doesn’t hammer its listeners with earnest nature-bound metaphors so much as relaying vignettes of love and loss next to an autumnal backdrop. Committing to traditional composition with sparse but recurring melodic touches, Whitwham crafts sweet understatement on “Escape the Moon” and “Silver Stars”.
Besides satisfyingly folky arrangements, Silver Skies also features grander approaches to Whitwham’s songwriting, most notably on the “Birds Of Prey”, with its haunted Elliott Smith reminiscent piano interplay, and “Ohio”, where a whole lot of echo introduces Lake Forest’s more obvious comparative point: Bon Iver. As a cottage-bound, lonely-guy record, Silver Skies does a respectable job of keeping off of Justin Vernon’s over-puffed coattails. Although veering for a similarly peaceful solitude, Whitwham and Vernon arrive at different ports on account of their distinct sensibilities. Tracks like “Whispers” and “An Autumn Sun Will Set the Land On Fire”, while less audacious than Bon Iver’s work, succeed as equally grounded mood-pieces that yearn to connect, human to human. Any natural imagery spotted along the way settles nicely, where it should, into Silver Skies sleepy ambience.
Lake Forest – Silver Skies
Posted on April 27, 2012 by arguejob
Toronto’s Will Whitwham makes music completely un-suggestive of the bustling metro where he resides. His cavernous folk cants drift effortlessly from light to dark, night to day. His lyrical imagery parades through the seasons and outward into the pristine untouched hinterland. Whitwham’s guitar writing is also a constant pleasure. His fluid incorporation of banjos, pianoes, and acoustic strings with effected electric elements is no new trick but his mastery of it is particularly noteworthy. Silver Skies glides in and out of consciousness so smoothly with its seamless transitions between instrumental tracks and big whispery vocal explorations. Trying to highlight an individual track for the reader’s immediate attention is not wise. This is why, over the course of the last couple months, I think I’ve played nearly every song off Silver Skies on The Ongoing Argument (CJSR, Mondays, 11-1). I recommend the record as an unpartitioned whole. Enjoy:
Will Whitwham, Elaine Kelly & Thom Gill
