#777In Threadbare Agnostic, JT Stivers weaves a multi-textural musical cloth of religious belief, personal struggles with faith and doubt, moments of spiritual transcendence, and the curious consequences of dogma. Inspired by Joni Mitchell’s ability to transport and transfix the listener through a finely-woven tapestry of poetry and music--and influenced by Peter Gabriel and Loreena McKennitt’s fusion of world musical styles--Stivers crafts Threadbare Agnostic with lyrics at turns mystical, philosophical, narrative, and downright funny. This work is woven with eclectic musical settings that are soulful or ethereal, that swing or groove, but always that captivate. While songs from Threadbare Agnostic include various musical styles, the sound is unmistakably personal, forged through years of exploration, and accessible to all of us who are likewise examining the nature of our spiritual selves.
JT Stivers is a songwriter, singer, multi instrumentalist, and veteran of the NYC music scene, having played in such diverse venues as CBGBs, Carnegie Recital Hall, Max’s Kansas City, Mikell’s Jazz Club, and the Lone Star Cafe. JT’s guitar session work can be heard on Polydor, Mercury, and Spring Records, and is featured on albums by seminal NYC rapper Curtis Blow (featuring Bob Dylan and George Clinton from P-Funk) and Rahmlee Davis (Phil Collins, the Phenix Horns, Earth, Wind, and Fire). JT has also recorded or performed with Brent Carter (Tower of Power) for Melba Moore Productions, along with members of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra, Michael Jackson’s band, D Train, and Cameo. Currently, Stivers enjoys playing with Maine’s Cuppagroove band, quartered in Portland, Maine when not teaching English at Freeport High School. Recording Magazine described Stivers’ alt-country ballad, “This Picture of You,” as “a joy to behold.” Stivers is a proud member of ASCAP.
