This extraordinary album, an underground classic since its release in early 1971, has been lurking around CD want lists for decades -- it seems to have been lost amid the bankruptcy of Avco/Embassy, the parent company of the record label for which it was recorded. Leonid Hambro was a renowned classical pianist who was known for his willingness to take chances with unusual repertory and arrangements; Gershon Kingsley was one of the earliest musicians to make a name for himself playing the Moog synthesizer, a device that, at the time in 1969-1970, more resembled a piece of laboratory apparatus than a musical instrument as that term had ever been understood. They were put together in the wake of the success of Wendy Carlos' Switched-On Bach (and this record was apparently also issued as Switched-On Gershwin at some point), and recorded the centerpiece of the album, "Rhapsody in Blue," at The Record Plant in New York in the fall of 1970. The results are delightful -- Kingsley apparently abandoned any connection to the familiar Ferde Grofé arrangement of the piece and simply transcribed the piano part on the spot into the sound of a synthesizer, with the result that the piece just soars above, around, and beyond the boundaries of the original, while never getting too far from the latter. This rendition ends up being among the more charming renditions of the work in any form ever committed to tape, and one heartily wishes it would show up on CD. The remainder of the album is purely Kingsley and his Moog, and delves into more daring electronic excursions based on Gershwin's writing as represented by Porgy and Bess. It's one of the best products of the public's brief embrace of electronic music from the end of the 1960s, a rival for Carlos' best work, and long overdue for a digital reissue.
