Nascono ad Alessandria nel 1983, dopo lo scioglimento dei Blaue Ruiter[4]. Esordiscono nel 1984 con l'EP Benvenuto Cellini, pubblicato dalla Contempo Records, che li fa conoscere al pubblico underground del tempo. Il primo album vedrà la luce, sempre per la Contempo, nel 1985 con il titolo di Mediterranea[5]. Un secondo album, cui stavano lavorando, non sarà mai pubblicato a causa dello scioglimento della band, avvenuto nel 1988.
Nel 2012 l'etichetta indipendente Oltrelanebbiailmare ripubblicherà tutto il loro materiale e alcuni inediti in un doppio cd intitolato Gallipoli 1915 e le altre storie.
Nel 2014, inaspettatamente, il gruppo si riunisce e ricompare in pubblico facendo da spalla ai Diaframma in occasione di un loro concerto al Teatro Macallè di Castelceriolo, in provincia di Alessandria, il 18 ottobre di quell'anno. Non c'è più Paolo Boveri alla voce, sostituito da Gianluca Piscitello. Della formazione originaria ci saranno i soli Flavio Gemma ed Enrico Ferraris. Tornati freneticamente in attività, pubblicano nel novembre del 2015 un nuovo album omonimo per l'etichetta Danze Moderne, a trenta anni esatti da Mediterranea, il loro ultimo album di studio prima dello scioglimento.

Viridanse formed in 1983 by Flavio Gemma with Paolo Boveri, both from Blaue Reiter, active band in the early 80s, and known for having published a song in "Gathered" compilation, Rockerilla in 1982. The early line up included Roberto Modellato on percussion and Enrico Ferraris on guitars.
In 1983 they produced a demo tape titled "Gallipoli 1915", with four tracks strongly influenced and rooted in post- punk but with a strong psychedelic print. The band starts to turn the first places where the new trends of the new wave were making inroads, collecting the first consents.

They began to work and write other songs with the intention to publish a record, while Antonello DeBellis replaces Roberto Modellato on drums. At that time there was the meeting with the Contempo Records of Florence, historical label of Italian new wave, producer of the first works of Diaframma, Litfiba, Soul Hunter, Pankow etc.
In September 1984, was released by Contempo Records , "Benvenuto Cellini" mini LP with four songs and soon gets great feedback from audiences and music critics, later becoming one of the symbolic albums of Italian dark-wave of the early eighties.

After touring in concerts in various parts of Italy to promote the work, between 1984 and 1985, the band began writing new tracks intended for a LP. The turning point is represented by tracks such as Mediterranea and Dolce Vita that mark a major departure from the dark atmosphere and tense of Benvenuto Cellini, in favor of a sound close to the character of the Italian new wave, with a more solar sound.
Towards the end of 1985 the band released the LP " Mediterranea " for Contempo Records , and leaps straight to number one in the poll of readers Rockerilla and Mucchio Selvaggio, Viridanse become the most voted group in 1985.

Between 1985 and 1986, the group toured to promote the new disc reaping great acclaim. In 1986 there was the participation to the big concert event " Rock against the Mafia " in Palermo on September 3, the television appearances on RAI 3 , Discoring Sanremo Rock, Radio RAI Stereodrome.

Towards the end of 1986 Enrico Ferraris left the group and was replaced by Maurizio Barberis. After having written new songs, it cracks the relationship with Contempo Records in 1987. The band recorded twelve tracks for a new album at Psycho Studio of Milan and soon abruptly interrupts his journey. The songs identified with the title “The Psycho Sessions” were never published until 2012.

In 2012 it comes out a double CD anthology titled "Gallipoli 1915 and other stories", published by the label Silentes / Oltrelanebbiailmare, which collects the two official works of the band and a substantial number of new songs and live . Among the new songs the band released four tracks belonging to the work recorded at Studio Psycho in 1987.

In May of 2014, thirty years since the first album " Benvenuto Cellini”," Viridanse are reformed . Flavio Gemma and Enrico Ferraris, the only original members, reconstitute the band with a new line up. The project is to create new music for new shows and to make a new album planned for 2015.

In March 2015 the band starts the recording of the new album, at the studio 4/4 Sonic Factory in Alessandria . The new work is then mixed in August at the Music-Ink Studios in Paruzzaro (NO). The new tunes composed between 2014 and March 2015, marked a significant change of gear moving away from the typical sounds of the wave of the eighties, in favor of a more hard and psychedelic sound, but with the constant use of the Italian language.
The album is titled simply “Viridanse”, it comes out November 16, 2015 released by Fonoarte – Danze Moderne (Audioglobe distribution). The album receives very good reviews from all main music magazines and web sites.

In March 2016 Viridanse released the new video for " Disordine " , the album's opening track , directed by Andrea DiBartolo. Meanwhile, the band began working on new songs for a new musical project and an album planned for early 2017. The album titled "Hansel & Gretel e la Strega Cannibale", is a concept inspired to the fairy tale, telling about the decline of the present civilization and the devastating aspects of the society in which we live. During June 2016 Fabrizio Calabrese leaves the band and Erik Nalin replaces him as drummer. With the partially renovated line up, Viridanse begin recording the new album in October and November 2016, in evocative settings of the Teatro Comunale di Alessandria (still closed to the public for renovations). The production is entrusted to the hands of Lorenzo Stecconi, already known for collaborations and productions of Zu, Ufomammut and many others. The musical project also involves a group of graphic artists, actors, photographers, painters for the creation of a short film inspired by the concept of the album. In November 2016 Rave Up Records publishes the whole Blaue Reiter production in vinyl. The LP, produced by Rave Up Records and inspired by the musical journalist Federico Guglielmi, titled “My Inner Thoughts” is a nine songs album with the original recordings of the band from 1981-1982. Blaue Reiter were a seminal group of Italian new wave of the early eighties and since their breakup were born Viridanse. In 2017 the Viridanse will play some songs of the Blaue Reiter live, together with the new repertoire.
