The band returned two years later with the ambitious second album, Porcelain (released on Geffen Records), and North American tours followed into 2005, but, after pulling the band off the road mid-tour, Ward said he needed to re-group. During that time Hinojos would leave Sparta to join The Mars Volta as their secondary guitarist and filling in Jeremy Ward's (Jim Ward's cousin, who died of a heroin overdose on May 25, 2003) position as sound manipulator. He was replaced by ex-Engine Down/Denali guitarist Keeley Davis.
In January 2006, the band announced that they had signed a deal with Hollywood Records, resulting in the album Threes that same year, and a short film, titled Eme Nakia, based on Hajjar's experiences as a child in Beirut, Lebanon.
In June 2008, Ward stated that Sparta is on hiatus and without a label. Three years later, the band is back in action and played their first show since 2008 in November 2011 in El Paso. The band will also be back in the studio in the fall to start working on their fourth album, and released a new song on May 17, 2012 called "Chemical Feel", but gone indefinite hiatus again in 2013.
On November 13, 2017 a new line-up was announced, consisting of returning members Jim Ward, Matt Miller and Gabriel Gonzalez (who played on tour for Wiretap Scars, as third guitarist and keyboards), along with a new member - Cully Symington on drums. A new song, "Graveyard Luck", was released on the same day. Another song, "Cat Scream", was released in April 2018, together with a tour announcement.
