Kerosene 454 была классической командой округа Колумбия, в том смысле, что просуществовала недолго и была довольно плодовитой. Группа сформировалась в 1993 году, начав карьеру с выпуска дебютного EP «Two For Flinching» и выпустив еще 3 ипихи за 2 года, группа записывает в 1995 году свой первый лонгплей «Situation at Hand». Ранние записи былы типичными для групп округа D.C. - быстрый, уничтожающий, немного мелодичный панк. После выхода первого LP, начинают проявляться большие способности баранщика Даррена Зентека и Kerosene 454 выпускают второй альбом «Came By to Kill Me» в 1996 году. Новая пластинка (которая абсолютно отличалась от однообразия ранних записей) стала открытием и была восторженно принята поклонниками группы. Следующей вехой в развитии группы стал «At Zero», вобрав в себя фирменность хриплого вокала и гитар Эрика Денно и Джима Уолла, создав противовес легендарному дуэту Пиччотто / Маккей из Fugazi. Группа становилась популярной и в 1997 году компания Polyvinyl выпускает на одной пластинке «Race» все ранние записи группы. в 1998 году Kerosene 454 выпускают свой 3й и последний альбом «At Zero», который звучал намного взрослее и мелодичней предыдущих работ. После небольшого тура в поддержку новой пластинки группа прекращает свое существование. Эрик Денно и Даррен Зентек входят в состав вашингтонской группы Oswego, в то время как братья Джим и Джон Уолл формируют новый состав вместе с Вито Бруно и Брэндоном Батлером (ex-Boys Life и Farewell Bend), а также с Вином Новара (ex-Crownhate Ruin).

With Came by to Kill Me, Kerosene 454 roars to the forefront of the Washington D.C. hardcore scene. The record manages to capture a perfect balance between punk's noisy dissonance and a melodic sensibility. The used formula is the exact opposite of the Pixies. While Frank Black relied on quiet verses and exploding choruses, Kerosene 454 opens with the explosion, using the chorus to reflect and replenish before diving in head first yet again. Like all of their catalogue, the record belongs to drummer Darren Zentek. His inventive timing prevents several cuts from dulling due to excessive repetition. All in all a strong effort and a fine example of the prototypical D.C. sound.

After the release of Kerosene 454's second full-length, Came By to Kill Me, it became apparent there was a need for Kerosene 454's older material to be back in print. After plenty of planning and hunting for the master tapes, Polyvinyl released Race which was a collection of every Kerosene 454 release prior to Came By to Kill Me. Race compiles the first Kerosene 454 album (Situation at Hand), a host of long-out-of-print 7?s, and a couple of unreleased tracks.

Much more polished than their previous releases, Kerosene 454's final effort shines with professionalism and experience. Producer J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines) hones Erik Denno's reluctant yelp into a tool strong enough to carry the whole record. Fortunately it doesn't have to. Unlike Came By to Kill Me, At Zero doesn't meander, doesn't become repetitious, and is always on target. The interplay between brothers John Wall and James Wall is impeccable; each strum and pluck echoing the other to form a seamless union between the guitar and bass. The best example is in "Negatives," where the bass carries the melody while Denno's voice floats above. Meanwhile, the guitar chimes a single tone with the rhythm of an alarm clock. It may very well be the best song they have ever written. The anger and playfulness that the group had exhibited is still present as well. "Heroes," with its manic beat, begins by Denno screaming, "Lies got your heroes," an appropriate lyric for a group from the nation's capital. The final two cuts feature a one-man show via drummer Darren Zentek. His work on the toms in "Pay Attention" is jaw-dropping, while "Spookin the Birds" proves how easy post-rock can be. At Zero is certainly the best record that Slowdime has released and one of the best rock & roll albums ever released by a D.C. band.
