Two layers of groups can be found in every musical movement: the groups that receive the most attention and generally go into the history books as predominant examples of their particular sound, and the other groups that remain stratified as history buries them beneath the surface. Thankfully, the reissue culture enables listeners to act as archaeologists and perhaps even mad scientists, digging up and resuscitating releases that may not have received proper attention the first time around. Such is the case with Crain's debut release, Speed. Recorded in Chicago by Steve Albini Speed was released in a limited-issue of 1,000 vinyl copies and quickly became buried beneath the success of colleagues Slint and Rodan in the Kentucky soil.
Crain had local fame but remained hidden to all but those who diligently sought them out, until Temporary Residence had the good sense to reissue Speed in 2005. Beneath the history is an unadulterated session of brutal post-rock and math rock that laid the blueprint for so many bands (for better and worse) that would come later in the decade and beyond. The reissue features 4 bonus tracks, originally recorded by D.C. figurehead Don Zientara, around the time of Speed. All of the tracks were remastered by John Golden in 2004 for the reissue.
In Albini's case, it seems as if time spent with Crain would later rub off with his Shellac project, creatively and sonically. "Monkey Wrench" is eerily similar to Jawbox (especially if Jawbox were fronted by Rollins), while "Proposed Production" could have easily rivaled anything Drive Like Jehu issued on their first record. Sometimes things just fall through the cracks, but for post-rock and experimental rock fans, this is the equivalent of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Heater is one of the sadly overlooked 1990s post-hardcore albums that deserves more attention. The title and the cover image give appropriate descriptions of the music: Energetic, angry, tense, aggressive. If anything, it is certainly unrelenting in its delivery. The songs themselves live up to their titles. "Blistering" is unrelenting punkish speed. "Knock Yr Daylights Out" has enough aggression in the music to get the point across if the lyrics don't - "All I wanted was a total war / And to knock your daylights out / Uncontested." Jon Cook's vocals constantly shift from violent shouts to lethargic talking, a familiar characteristic of Louisville rock from this time period, and is used effectively throughout. He makes "Valium and Alcohol" sound just like that - one under the suppressant effects of the drugs which also inadvertently lower one's guard enough to allow bursts of rage that would otherwise not come forth. The underlying chaotic tones come through clearly on "One Who Hangs" which finally breaks the tension of the album, culminating into a cacophony of guitar noise and bass feedback. The exhaustion sets in, and the drumless "Broken Heart of a Neutron Star" is the final, tired statement of one that has given up on the ordeal.
Steve Albini's recording adds the perfect amount of grittiness to the music. Unfortunately this was Crain's last album, so it is unknown as of this time how much further Crain would - or could - have gone with the power displayed in this record.

Arising from the Louisville math rock scene that also spawned Slint and Rodan, Crain's slow, post-hardcore grind bore some resemblance to the likes of Helmet and the Jesus Lizard. However, their intricate compositions and time signature shifts were firmly a product of the Louisville scene, and even influenced some of the local bands that eventually rose to greater prominence. Crain was formed in 1989 after the breakup of the local band Cerebellum, with an initial lineup that featured vocalist Drew Daniel, guitarist Tim Furnish, bassist Jon Cook, and drummer Will Chatham. After recording a song that wound up on a split 7" with Deathwatch, Daniel left for college, and would later go on to form one-half of the experimental techno outfit Matmos. Cook took over lead vocals for a short time, then Kristen Shelor passed through the ranks until guitarist/singer Joey Mudd -- another ex-Cerebellum member -- became the frontman in early 1990. Mudd sang on a second track on the Crain/Deathwatch split, which was released on Slamdek that year; he also performed on the four-song EP Rocket, issued on the band's own Automatic Wreckords label in 1991. This lineup recorded the first Crain LP, which was issued on Automatic Wreckords in 1992; titled Speed, it was produced by the legendary Steve Albini.
Mudd departed after its completion, and Cook took his spot on lead vocals; he also switched to guitar, and a new rhythm section of bassist Jason Hayden and drummer John Causey came on board. Causey stuck around long enough to contribute "Coalmine #666" to a Simple Machines collection called Working Holiday!, but soon departed. When Crain entered the studio with Albini to record its second album, Jon Cook doubled up on guitar and drums; he also moonlighted briefly as the initial drummer for renowned math rockers Rodan. Crain's sophomore album, Heater, was picked up by Restless Records for national release in 1994. Full-time drummer Tony Bailey joined soon after, and when bassist Hayden subsequently left, he was replaced by Todd Cook. In 1995, the group contributed the Heater track "Hey Cops!" to the soundtrack of the cult indie rock film Half Cocked. They also began work on a new album, but it was never completed; Crain disbanded at the end of 1996. Furnish formed Parlour with Bailey, while Todd Cook went on to play with prominent Louisville indie bands like the For Carnation, Retsin, Four Fifty Six, and the Shipping News.
