These dudes continue to impress and entertain me. They keep churning out records with an admirable regularity that makes me feel even worse about our pitiful volume of output this many years into our band. I’ve loved all of Intercourse’s prior records, and was excited to hear they had another album out. Also, full disclosure, I’m internet acquaintances with front-man Tarek Ahmed.
The band’s motto of “music for aliens made by mutants” continues to ring true on their latest batch of tunes. It’s a fun, maniacal mash up of stuff like Kiss It Goodbye/Deadguy and Daughters – an awkward rambling blast of violence. Everything sounds crisp and loud. The guitars sound great from the busy notey-runs to the heavier chords. The bass is beefy and over-driven and compliments the punchy and full sounding drums nicely. The vocals continue with a Tim Singer-esque style that totally floats my boat. The lyrics are great – a tense, rambling condemnation of everything and everyone. It’s pretty great. Sci-fi, sex, drugs, death, politics, it’s all there. Killer.
Intercourse rips. They hurl riffs at the wall, but they also know how to ride a groove. Get this. – Jason
Piles – Heck yeah! I love the sound of this band. It takes me back to the mid/late 90s and Deadguy and Kiss It Goodbye. The guitar feedback squelch in the right channel is a sweet detail. The drum and vocal break through the middle is cool, especially when the rest of the band builds back in. Ripper.
Cuckoid The Family Ghost – I love the lyrics on this one, and the music kicks major behind as well! It’s got my faced locked in a perpetual sneer and the herky-jerky rhythm has me banging my head all wrong. Thumbs way up.
Beyond Human – Sweet, another rocking number about alien probes. I love it. The line “everything I need to know I learned from the Twilight Zone” is great! The big mosh riff in this track is a total vertebrae disintegrater. The slow downs and speed ups are devastating. Killer. Thumbs way up!
Naugatuck’s Alright If You Like Suboxone – At it’s core, this track has a much more direct punk-rock vibe than some of the other tracks, and I’m digging it, but it sounds a little “off” compared to the rest of the record. The big beat intro sets the stage nicely for the romping riffs that follow, although the heaviness is toned down a bit.
The Book Of God – At under 40 seconds long, this track comes in and rocks pretty hard, but it does leave me wanting a little more. This one’s ok.
Comfort Measures – The fast/slow, chaotic/atmospheric dynamics in this track work really well and I’m into it. The slower parts provide a great pulse, and the fast parts inject a great deal of chaos into the whole mess. This is good stuff.
Selling Fake Acid At Ozzfest – The title of this track betrays the message of mass shootings. It’s a 51 second banger that primarily focus on making you bang your head into brain damage. Thumbs up.
The Kids Are Alt-Right – Heck yeah, this is another punk-rock ripper. The ugly riffs that propel this track make me want to move and the lyrics are great. It’s heavy and it makes me want to dance like I was 18 again. I’m stomping my heal and pumping my fist and digging it. Rocker.
Too Fucked To Yiff – Man, this is a total neck wrecker, and the vocals about an overdose and body disposal paints a tragic picture. This one has a great hardcore vibe to it. Thumbs way up on this mega-bummer of a track.
Corricidin Is A Helluva Drug – This is a noisey track that nods a bit toward bands like DEP with the staccato guitar accents. When the riff shifts about half-way through, I feel like my whole body just wants to collapse into itself in fits. I love the slowdown and dissolution of the track near the end on this one. Rad.
Cum Kind Of Monster – This track tips the scales at 8 minutes, which is about as long as the first half of the record combined. Jokes on you, though, because most of the duration is a synthesized sort of outro (which is pretty cool, by the way). This song is about hanging out with Metallica. Kind of. It’s gross, but dang if I can’t help but bang my head along with it. Lyrically, this one totally breaks down at the end into a tirade about Dave Mustaine. There’s a surprising, almost melodic element to the “chorus” that sounds really cool.
