Taking their name from the Drive Like Jehu song, the spastic post-hardcore of southern California's Bullet Train to Vegas came about under the direction of vocalist/guitarist Dan Sena, formerly of Adamantium and Give Until Gone.
After his previous bands disbanded, Sena wanted to form something new that would challenge what he felt to be stagnant punk and indie rock scenes. After getting an initial lineup together, the Profile This EP was soon recorded
and released in limited amounts in 2003.
Things didn't quite gel, however, and following that record, a complete member overhaul took place. Accordingly, Sena claimed that Bullet Train to Vegas never truly began until he found the kindred spirits of Greg Horton
(bass/vocals), Erik Bailey (guitar),and Marty Cornish (drums). Together, the guys refined their sound, which included elements of Gang of Four, Fugazi, and Clikatat Ikatowi, and took it out on the road, sharing stages along the
way ith the likes of Bloc Party, Sparta, Pretty Girls Make Graves, JR Ewing, and more. The quartet began writing its debut album in the spring of 2004, and after [b]producer Alex Newport[/b] [b](At the Drive-In, the Locust)[/b] caught wind of
some demos, he insisted the guys record with him in his studio. An unmastered version of the resultingWe Put Scissors Where Our Mouths Are fell on ears over at Nitro Records, which then picked up Bullet Train to Vegas and
released the band's album in June
2005.

Recording information: 09/2004-12/2004. Imagine if Gang of Four bore the alien two-headed baby of XTC, then imagine that they gave the baby up for adoption and it was raised by Sweep the Leg Johnny.
That baby would inevitably grow up and form a band, and the band would probably sound quite a bit like Bullet Train to Vegas. For all of their obvious influences, Bullet Train to Vegas has a surprisingly mature and fully realized
sound, as well as the kind of manic energy that can make up for any number of weaknesses. Though they're not a math rock band in any meaningful sense of the word, they somehow manage to make 4/4 sound like 7/8 on a
regular basis: try counting along with "RFLCTR BTZ" and "Feeding God to the Lions" and you'll be surprised how easy it turns out to be. "Removing Ground" flirts with actual melody (all the other songs are more screeched and
squawked than sung), and "Some Goodbyes Last Forever" appropriates a classic Motown drum trope and uses it to advance the band's own bizarro sonic agenda. But the album's best track is "Fashion the New Black," an airtight,
almost claustrophobic ode to...well, something. Cocaine? Suicide? Haute couture? It's hard to say. Recommended.
