Документ издал его именно как комплит Роберта Уилкинса, (соответствующий вариант фронта обложки я нашёл в инете и поместил в папку раздачи). The passing of Robert Wilkins on May 30, 1987 at the age of ninety-one marked our last link with a generation of blues singers who could impart first hand knowledge of the development of the oral tradition prior to the advent of recording techniques and subsequent dissemination via the gramophone record. Part Cherokee Indian, Wilkins was born in Hernando, Mississippi but as soon as he was old enough relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, a city he had visited many times as a child whilst on the traditional "cotton run". As Wilkins recalled of his childhood days, "We would drive a wagon or buggy to Memphis; it was nearly two miles. I hauled the five bales of cotton on a two-mule team from Hernando to Memphis". For the return journey he would collect provisions to replenish Hernando's merchandise store. In 1928 Robert Wilkins, then thirty-two, was introduced to Ralph Peer of Victor records by Rev. Lonnie McIntorsh and in September that year Wilkins recorded four songs, a couple of which were two-part compositions. The evocative "Rolling Stone" has a storyline that builds verse by verse, gaining its momentum with a hypnotic guitar figure, the almost free-form structure suggesting that Wilkins could have carried on endlessly had the time dictates not been otherwise. Almost a year later Victor rivals Vocalion instructed their field unit to visit Memphis and, poaching Robert Wilkins from under Victor's nose, recorded him in late 1929 and again during early 1930. The sessions produced many noteworthy numbers, in particular the memorable "That's No Way to Get Along", a song with a haunting melody and lyrical images like "they treated me like my poor heart was made of a rock of stone, you know that was enough, mama, to make your sun wish'd he's dead and gone". The death theme being perpetuated in an almost maudlin "I'll Go with Her" while its coupling, "Get Away Blues", is performed very much after the style of fellow Hernando artist Garfield Akers. As the new decade advanced so the Depression took its toll on blues record sales (most sold in hundreds rather than in thousands during the era) which may have accounted for Wilkins not being asked back to the studio for more sessions. Whatever the reason, five years later, in October 1935 over a two-day period he cut a further five blues: three in the company of a second guitarist and a spoons player, and two solo. In general the songs were more uptempo, urban, and topical as in "New Stock Yard Blues", a composition taking its inspiration from his day job with references to the stock yard owner and local auctioneer. However, this return to recording was to be short-lived, for later that year he joined the Church of God in Christ and became a minister where he remained until his discovery in the 1960s. In February 1964 he was persuaded to record an album of religious material. One song was a long, improvised reworking of "That's No Way to Get Along" using the biblical theme of the "Prodigal Son" for the lyric base. This was subsequently covered by the Rolling Stones but this act brought little royalty revenue to Wilkins as a copyright had been claimed by a music publishing company.
The city of Memphis has been linked with the blues since W.C. Handy updated 'Boss' Crump's political campaign song of 1909 and published it as 'The Memphis Blues' in 1912. This was, of course, a formal composition but when 'race' recordings really took off in the 1920's a whole underworld of blues activity was discovered to be in existence in the city, centred on the 'black' thoroughfare of Beale Street. Beale was rough; joints such as Pee Wee's, The Hole In The Wall and Jim Canan's revelling in a reputation for having a man for breakfast' everyday – “even though 'you never find a dead Nigger on Beale”. The implication being that bodies were quickly hauled out and dumped elsewhere before daybreak. But there was another side to the Memphis Blues. It was born from the “Country Blues” that were drawn in by Afro-Americans from outlying rural areas looking for work and bringing their music with them. This, the first of several volumes dedicated to Memphis Blues, covers the work of three outstanding musicians playing in the Country Blues genre. In 1964 Wilkins, who had by then turned his back on “The Devil’s Music”, recorded and improvised reworking of That’s No Way To Get Along using the biblical theme of the "Prodigal Son" for the lyric base. This was subsequently covered by the Rolling Stones. Tom Dickson and Allen Shaw keep the standard high with Shaw (see also DOCD-5159) producing the fine, driving, Moanin’ The Blues with bottleneck slide guitar accompaniment.
