Willie Perryman, известный как Piano Red (не путать с Piano C. Red, рожд. James Wheeler, 1933, Алабама), родился 19.10.1911 в Hampton Georgia (близ Атланты). В ранние 30-е Вилли Перриман выступал пианистом на house party, juke joints и barrelhouses в Джорджии, Алабаме, Теннесси, Северной и Южной Каролине - как солист либо в составе команд Barbecue Bob, Charlie Hicks, Curley Weawer, Blind Willie McTell, Blind Boy Fuller. Generally, Willie worked as a soloist, trying to make himself heard above a torrent of voices and clinking bottles in the joints. The effect all this had on Willie's style was that he emphasised his percussive piano playing, hitting the keys with his hands wide open, and developed his harsh singing style (remember, there were no microphones at the honky tonks and fish fries!).

Нет смысла описывать здесь долгую и плодотворную карьеру Piano Red (её результаты слушайте на CD1-CD3). Отметим лишь, что он был автором и первым исполнителем таких хитов, как Rockin' With Red (25.07.1950, один из претендентов на титул "первого в мире рок-н-ролла") - так, в одном только 1957 году его под названием She Knows How To Rock [Me] записал и Jerry Lee Lewis, и Little Richard; Right String But The Wrong Yo Yo (1950), She Walks Right In (1952), Decatur Street Boogie (1953), Woo-Eee (1956) и мн. др.
Осенью 1959 г. на лейбле Jax он записал 8 вещей, которые были выпущены под именем Piano Red & The Meter-Tones. В составе группы были Curtis I. Smith (guitar), Bewerly Watkins (guitar), Tommy LeGon (bass), Bobby Lee Tuggle (drums).
С мая 1961 г. начинается путь группы Dr. Feelgood & The Interns. В неё к прежнему составу The Meter-Tones добавились Roy Lee Johnson Jr (guitar) и Howard 'Long John' Hobbs (bass вместо Tommy LeGon), с 1962 г. - знаменитый саксофонист Homer L. 'Boots' Randolph, впоследствии и другие известные музыканты 60-х. Первой записью группы стала композиция Doctor Feel-Good (автор Curtis I. Smith), выпущенная на лейбле Okeh (Ok 4-7144, LP OKS 14101). Сессии Dr. Feelgood & The Interns с 1961 по 1966 гг. представлены на CD4.
Происхождение названия Dr. Feelgood сам Вилли объясняет так:
"Do you feel good? The doctor is here! I'm telling you, I gets the spirit from the universe, and, as the old man sends it down to me, I'm gonna send it right out there to you. Music is medecine. I cure more people than any doctor in the world. I use music to do it, and I'm gonna fix you up where you be feeling good for weeks after I'm gone."
Последний раз при жизни Вилли поднялся в чартах в начале 1985 г. благодаря исполненной в дуэте с кантри-певцом Danny Shirley другой версии Yo Yo. Умер Willie Perryman 25 июля 1985 г. - ровно, день в день, 35 лет спустя после своей знаменитой сессии с Rockin' With Red.
Вот мнение о музыке Вилли Перримана его биографа, Norbert Hess:
"For pure enjoyment, for simple rockin' good music, nothing can match Willie Perryman a.k.a. Piano Red a.k.a. Doctor Feelgood. He played his piano like a jackhammer and belted out his songs. He was unlike anyone else on the planet."

The ultra-rare Chess and Jax sessions, and the highly prized '60s OKeh sides that include the original versions of Doctor Feelgood and Mister Moonlight. 127 tracks, recorded between 1950 and 1966 as Piano Red and as Dr. Feelgood for RCA, Groove, Checker, Jax, Okeh and Columbia.
