Born January 5, 1970 in Bedford, England, Darrel is widely regarded as one of the most talented and original artists to have emerged from the British rock 'n' roll scene in many years.
With fifteen solo albums to his credit, he is now receiving critical acclaim within the roots music scene, as well as gaining support from a much wider audience - outside the confines of rock 'n' roll - through his ability to mix country, rockabilly, '60s pop and blues.
He has also appeared on a further 50 plus albums, working for other artists in other musical roles such as session guitarist, producer, songwriter or musical arranger.
As a session guitarist he has worked with a number of American and British rock 'n' roll and rockabilly legends, from the '50s up to the present, including: Billy Lee Riley, Glen Glenn, Alvis Wayne, Rocky & Billy Burnette, Don & Dewey, Roc LaRue, Terry Noland, Merrill E. Moore, Sonny Burgess, Vernon Taylor, Linda Gail Lewis, Slim Jim Phantom, Dave Phillips, Johnny Carroll, Screamin' Lord Sutch, Shakin' Stevens (as guitarist on the 1999 UK tour), and Wee Willie Harris.
In 1999, Aria UK endorsed Darrel to promote Gretsch guitars and he is now a proud Peavey endorsee using their amps, guitars and PA equipment. Darrel has also designed a semi-acoustic guitar – The Rockingham - which is now in production and available in all guitar shops throughout the UK and Europe, as well as the USA.
Darrel has also worked in the West End, playing guitar and portraying 50's rock legend Eddie Cochran for the revival of Jack Good's Elvis The Musical. This led to his own show touring the country at various national theatres.
In May 2000, Mainstream Books published a book Darrel had been working on for nearly three years. Co-written with author Julie Mundy, Don't Forget Me - The Eddie Cochran Story, was released to commercial and critical acclaim, and has helped to significantly boost Darrel's musical career to a wider, more commercial audience. The book was also released on paperback by Billboard in the United States during 2001.
Darrel's work in 2001 also included a second Cochran Connection album as well as working on sessions with Jeff Beck and Chrissie Hynde. Then Darrel closed the year by collaborating again with Julie Mundy to form Hunka Burnin' Records and Publishing. The first release, entitled Ghost of Love - a collection of 12 self-penned tracks - became his ninth solo release.
2002 saw Darrel successfully tour Australia, with further US gigs in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Green Bay, Wisconsin. CD releases included the highly acclaimed Hip Shakin' Baby (with Rocky Burnette, son of 50's Rocker Johnny Burnette), and The Sweet Georgia Brown Sessions.
Darrel Higham, and his backing band - The Enforcers, further sealed their reputation as the UK's finest exponent of Rock 'n' Roll/Rockabilly when they were asked to provide the evening's entertainment for Stella McCartney's wedding - on the last weekend of August, 2003, on the Isle Of Bute, Scotland. Even her Dad enjoyed the lads music, so much so Sir Paul joined them onstage for a couple of numbers!
2003 has also seen the release of The Enforcers most popular and fastest-selling CD to date - URBAN JAMBOREE, for the UK based label, Foot Tapping Records. Darrel now works exclusively for the label, recording and producing CD's for artists such as Carlos Mejuto, Imelda Clabby, Alan Mills, and Cliff Edmonds.
2004 saw the release of Darrel's third CD for Foot Tapping Records - Believe What You Hear: A Tribute To Ricky Nelson. This has quickly become Darrel's best-selling solo release to date.
The following year Darrel teamed up with the legendary Stray Cats drummer, Slim Jim Phantom for a four week tour of Europe. After meeting at the 50s Rockin' Fest in Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA - The Enforcers had been booked there to perform their own set as well as back 50s legends Roc LaRue and Terry Noland - whilst Jim was hosting a nightly jam session. The two got on well and Jim asked Darrel to front his new Rockin' trio - The Slim Jim Phantom Trio. This has snow-balled into a regular touring band throughout the UK and Europe, with further work in the USA, Japan and Australia planned throughout 2007. They recorded a CD together in LA in January 2006 that comprised of well known rockers, plus 6 Higham originals. Called Kat Men, the CD has received rave reviews around the globe.
Also in 2005, Darrel formed a partnership with Clive and Colin Duffin from Foot Tapping Records in a new venture - Embassy Studios (so named after Darrel's rather strange obsession with the old Woolworths record label, Embassy Records!!). This 16-track analogue recording studio now records all of Foot Tapping releases, but is commercially available to any band that wishes to use it's superb facilities.
