Danny Heines Discography (5 CDs)
Жанр: Adult Alternative / Chamber Jazz / Contemporary Instrumental
Long known for his virtuosity as a fingerstyle guitarist, Danny Heines has been a major force in pioneering the rhythmically propelled technique of "tapping" on acoustic guitar. His multi-layered compositions and uniquely percussive solo pieces are rooted in a strong melodic sense and performed with awe-inspiring articulation.
In addition to his work as a guitarist Danny is among a handful of westerners adept in the art of throat singing, a technique producing two notes simultaneously, wherein the overtones of the voice are manipulated to create melodies while holding a single pitch.
Danny's strong passion for world music can be felt on his most recent fifth CD, "What Worlds They Bring", as he combines musical influences from around the globe, including folk melodies from Eastern Europe and Africa. Embraced by world music radio and listeners alike this CD reached #4 on the NAV national airplay chart and the #1 on the syndicated radio show, Echoes.
Heines’ four earlier discs on Silverwave Records have consistently charted in the top ten in magazines such as Billboard and R&R, with "Every Island" reaching #1 in Jazz Iz. He also appears on the Windham Hill Guitar Sampler and performs frequently with critically acclaimed artists such Michael Manring and Alex de Grassi.
Danny grew up playing rock & roll and jazz and in a musically rich environment in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where his mother promoted concerts, hosting bands such as The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Frank Zappa, and King Crimson. Upon hearing Danny sing at age two, Dave Brubeck told his mother he was destined for a life of music.

Danny Heines' 1986 debut for Silver Wave finds the Colorado-based guitarist working well within the parameters of contemporary instrumentalism. However, he isn't swallowed up by the genre's tendency toward the bland, since he focuses his playing on some solid, largely unaccompanied acoustic work. With electric guitar leads so smooth they're almost formless, Aqua Touch's introductory title track suggests that the record might drift off into nothingness before it can even really begin. But Heines redeems himself with the gentle "September Snow" and "Dahlia's Dreams," two unaccompanied acoustic numbers that feature plenty of guitar player fireworks, but still retain their pristine, introspective feel. Heines loses his way a bit with the lighthearted modern jazz of "Otter Glide." While it's played solidly, it doesn't ultimately go anywhere since it lacks the emotion and earnestness inherent in Aqua Touch's more acoustic sections. The album does end relatively strong with the epic "Mountaintop." Led by the soaring breath of a flute, the song eventually adds violin to harmonize with the first instrument. At over seven minutes, it's easy to imagine the two instruments finding each other on the wind crying around the crags and plateaus of the song's titular massif. Overall, a solid debut from Heines that should appeal to fans of Bruce BecVar or Pat Metheny. ~ Johnny Loftus, AMG

Danny Heines' lush guitar work is accentuated by saxophonist and oboist Paul McCandless and Brazilian percussionist Café on this, his second effort for Silver Wave. There's a palpable sense of temperate relaxation about the record, beginning with the easygoing breeze of the title track and continuing through the bossa nova read through "Blue Day." Heines doesn't seem as concerned with building atmosphere as he was with his debut; this is important, because it was that preoccupation that tended to weigh down the modern jazz-influenced sections of Aqua Touch. Just as the unaccompanied acoustic parts of his debut were its strongest, Every Island shines most when Heines is surrounded by the least. "Pinnacle Wheel" certainly accesses the contemporary instrumental sound. But with McCandless' inspired soloing, lightly accented keyboards, and lush reverb surrounding him, Heines is allowed to dance around the song's slight Latin vibe with his expressive guitar phrasing. While some later experiments with moody atmospherics don't work quite as well, Heines' synthesis of island sounds makes for listening that's more easygoing than just plain easy. It's time to get that cabana wear out of storage. ~ Johnny Loftus, AMG

Danny Heines' third effort for Silver Wave might be his most interesting yet, humming along nicely on a lighthearted, contemporary jazz vibe. For this outing, the guitarist is again joined by oboist and sax man Paul McCandless, as well as crack session bassist Michael Manring and percussionist William Kennedy. He continues to explore the subtle curves of Brazilian music -- "For Beo Dene" features the bossa nova purr of new age vocalist Joan Beal. But it's his jazz roots in which Heines is most interested on One Heart Wild. "Where Eyes Converge" begins with a slightly foreboding acoustic figure, over which more guitar sketches out a pensive melody. Fretless bass adds the bottom end, and breathy reeds color in the margins. "Another Time" is even more of a jazz outing; here, Heines trades solos with McCandless as Latin-influenced percussion patters in the background. The airy, effortless soloing that makes up the bulk of Wild will never be confused with the hard notes of the more tradition-minded players. But in his element, Heines' talented runs up and down the fret board are quite enjoyable, and his ability to accent songs with just the right touch of rhythm or breezy synth is remarkable. "Up to Stay" might be One Heart Wild's best example of this. Its insistent beat is created from elements of both traditional percussion and understated keyboard work, and the bass solo break nods to the old school while keeping things drenched in modernism. Together with the late-night cabaret shuffle of "Walk On, Bright Eyes," the cut makes the album's musical heart beat. ~ Johnny Loftus, AMG

I recently bought this album knowing little about Danny Heines. I wouldn't normally take the time to write a review but this album has moved me to wax poetic. It is far and away the best guitar album to come along in years. I guess it's been out for a few years but it still sounds totally fresh. The guitar playing is brilliantly executed and highly innovative, while possessing a deeply soulful quality. His solo guitar pieces sound like a cross between Michael Hedges and Tuck Andress (of Tuck & Patty) yet completely original. The ensemble pieces have find Heines weaving hypnotic guitar textures into fresh arrangements that are full of delightful suprises . i.e. a sample of Pygmy voices, cellist David Darling , and vocalist Vicki Randle of the Tonight Show Band. The real clincher is even my wife likes this album. The first time we have a consensus in years. Anyway, I'd recommend it to anyone. ~ amazon.com Customer Review

What Worlds They Bring is a jazz-flavored world music date. While Danny Heines plays guitar, flute, and percussion and contributed all 13 of the originals (most of which are based on folk melodies), the main stars of the first half of the set are actually the vocalists Irina Mikhailova, Yshara, and Tina Malia. Heines also vocalizes (using throat singing) on a couple numbers, while his guitar playing is a major factor in the success of the latter half of the project. The various percussionists (particularly Ty Burhoe on tables and frame drums) are also strong assets to this atmospheric and often-haunting set of Eastern world music. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG
