A true renaissance man, Gil Melle began his career as a post-bop baritone saxophonist who also composed and painted, later branching out into a wide variety of artistic and scientific fields. He abandoned jazz fairly early on in his career, choosing to compose a number of film and television scores and experiment with electronic music instead. Then again, Melle's music wasn't strictly jazz -- it was a hybrid of jazz, drawn from Duke Ellington in particular, and classical music, which he called "primitive modern." That "primitive modern" music was on display on a series of albums for Blue Note and Prestige in the late '50s. Following that series, Melle only released records sporadically, but he kept amazingly busy, composing scores, pioneering electronic music, building specialized computers and synthesizers, painting, piloting, and restoring automobiles and planes, as well as keeping an antiquarian microscopical instrumentation collection.
Melle was born in New York City, where he was raised by a family friend after his parents abandoned him at the age of two. As a child, he began painting (he won several national painting competitions as a preteen) and playing saxophone as a teen. Before he was 16 years old, he was playing several jazz clubs in Greenwich Village. At the age of 19, he signed to Blue Note, becoming the first white musician on the label's roster. At Blue Note, he released five 10" records before recording his first full-length 12" LP, Patterns in Jazz, in 1956. In addition to recording and performing jazz, Melle continued with his artwork, and his paintings and sculptures were displayed at several New York galleries; in addition, his art was featured on his own albums, as well as records by Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, and Thelonius Monk. He left Blue Note shortly after the Patterns in Jazz sessions, signing with Prestige. Between 1956 and 1957, he recorded three albums for Prestige -- Primitive Modern, Gil's Guests, and Quadrama -- before deciding to halt his career as a traditional jazz bandleader.
Melle moved to Los Angeles in the '60s, where he began to compose scores for film and television. Over the next 30 years, he wrote scores for over 125 films. He also began working with electronic music, building his own synthesizers, including (arguably) the first drum machine, and performing with the first all-electronic jazz band, the Electronauts, at the tenth Monterey Jazz Festival. In 1967, he returned to recording with Tome VI, an all-electronic jazz album released on Verve. He continued to pioneer electronic music, writing scores for Night Gallery and The Andromeda Strain entirely with synthesizers, which was unheard of at the time. In addition to writing music for films, he composed several symphonies, which he performed with symphony orchestras in Toronto, London, and New Zealand.
During the mid-'90s, Melle decided to concentrate on the visual arts, in particular his computer-based digital painting, which drew great acclaim from art critics across America. Gil Melle died of a heart attack at his home in Malibu, California on October 28, 2004.

Blue Note raids the back of its vaults for all four of Melle's long out of print 10" LPs, plus the 12" Patterns in Jazz, in order to place back in circulation a musician who had been nearly invisible to the jazz world for a good three decades. Though Melle's entertaining self-penned liner notes may be outrageously self-aggrandizing, this collection leaves little doubt that he was (and remains) a marvelous saxophonist and an intriguing composer who hasn't been given his due. On the early sides, Melle plays an erudite, relaxed, always musical tenor sax, and "Transition" marks his recorded debut on baritone, which he uses in a thoughtful, even quizzical manner for the remainder of the set. As a composer, Melle was very much the uncompromising cool bopper, but was also equipped with a fascinating mind of his own. His first session is also the most startling: "Four Moons" is brilliant in its Kentonian harmonic way, with vibraphone striking the chords; so is his most famous jazz composition "The Gears," with its Monica Dell scat vocal lead doubled by vibraphone. Further on in the set, Melle does away with the piano in the cool tradition, but gives the lineup an unorthodox twist by using a guitarist (Tal Farlow, Lou Mecca, or Joe Cinderella) in the keyboard role, and a trombonist (Eddie Bert or the swinging, vastly underrated Urbie Green) or even a tuba (Don Butterfield) on the front line. He also employs consistently first-class rhythm sections, with Max Roach and a young Joe Morello among the drummers. For those super-collectors who may have the extremely rare originals (now worth hundreds of dollars each), there is one unreleased track, "The Nearness of You"; the digitally remastered sound, flaws in the master tapes aside, is excellent.

This wonderful 2-CD set by saxophonist Gil Melle is one of six titles released as part of Blue Note's new Connoisseur 10" series. The set consists of four 10" LPs and the one 12" LP (Patterns In Jazz) Gil recorded for the label. These extremely rare sessions contain a mix of straight bop, a number of standards and many of Melle's unique third stream compositions. Melle's use of a guitar (Tal Farlow, Lou Mecca and Joe Cinderella) in place of a piano was seen as a bold, innovative step.
At the time of these recordings, 1952 to 1956, Melle was quite prolific, but by 1957 he had moved on to pursue other interests. He has scored over 125 films, painted, experimented with electronic instruments and is often credited for inventing the first drum machine.
Although these discs do contain some sonic imperfections they remain a valuable document of one of the most cerebral and creative figures in jazz.

Gil Melle is often awarded less acclaim for his chops than for his groundbreaking achievements (he was the first Caucasian signed to Blue Note; he built and played the first electronic horn; he built and played the first drum machine and started what many consider to be the first electronic "band," the Electronauts). On The Complete Blue Note Fifties Sessions we are afforded a portrait of Melle as more the cool-era combo leader than the trail-blazing innovator. That's not all bad. After all, Melle had the formidable Blue Note stable from which to draw. Highlights here include Tal Farlow's tasteful guitar figures on a number or tracks as well as appearances by Oscar Pettiford, Red Mitchell, and Max Roach. Don't be put off by Melle's out-cat reputation. This is slinky, easily-digested cool swinging. --S. Duda
