Bennie Moten
There was only one city outside of New York which was of any importance for big-band jazz at the end of the Twenties: Kansas City, Missouri. Clarence Lemont "Bennie" Moten was born there on the 13th November, 1894. His name is closely connected with the story of the creation of jazz.
He received piano lessons from his mother, a pianist, as a child. He learned to play a 2nd instrument at the age of 12, the baritone horn. He played in a youth brass band, and performed as a pianist a short time later in various bands in his hometown. He formed his own quintet at the beginning of the Twenties, which was expanded to a sextet for their first recordings in 1923. Moten expanded the band once again 3 years later. The band was closer to the East Coast formations through the line-up of 2 trumpets, a trombone and 3 saxophones. As opposed to Fletcher Henderson Moten preferred the softer 2/4 rhythm. Moten's nephew Ira Buster played the accordion, an instrument not often used in jazz, in the band of his uncle's from 1929. When Moten took over the legendary "Blue Devils" from Walter Page he established the conditions for the later swing style. His ensemble was regarded as the best in Kansas City. Eddie Durham, Count Basie, Jimmy Rushing, Hot Lips Page and Jack Washington played with him in 1930. Walter Page also joined the band in 1931. One year later - during a tour through the American East - the first recordings were made with Count Basie, which were to prematurely show some of the pianist's later style.
Bennie Moten, who was at first at home in the New Orleans style and ragtime, developed the foundation for the dry, loose swing through the personell expansion of his band into the popular dance formations of the day, He was just as successful as a stride pianist and as a business man. His way of working as a bandleader was influenced by his tolerance, self-control and tactically clever planning. The recordings of the year 1932 were to be the band's last under Moten's leadership.
Bennie Moten was never able to enjoy the result of the influence of his music on the later style of jazz. He died on the 2nd April, 1935 in Kansas City, as the result of an operation on his tonsils.
Henry "Red" Allen
Henry "Red" Allen Jnr. was born on the 7th January, 1908 in the vicinity of New Orleans.
His father, Henry Allen Snr., was the leader of the brass band in which such famous New Orleans musicians as King Oliver, Sidney Bechet and Louis Armstrong had begun their careers. Red also learned at the age of 8 to play the trumpet from his father, and also performed in his band.
Allen worked as of 1923 with George Lewis, belonged to the band of Capt. John Handy, and toured as of 1926 with Fate Marable's Riverboat Orchestra. He toured a year later with King Oliver, and went in 1929 to New York where he played for 4 years with Luis Russell's famous orchestra, and made his first recordings under his own name.
In 1933 Allen was taken on as a soloist in Fletcher Henderson's band, and recorded several very popular records in this period with Coleman Hawkins, whereby he himself sang and played trumpet. Allen changed over to the "Mills Blue Rhythm Band" in the following year , and he stayed with them up unitl 1936. "Red" then played for 3 years in the band of Louis Armstrong, and was parallel to this leader of his own sextet, to which the trombone player - and friend of Allen's for many years - J.C. Higginbotham and the clarinetist Edmond Hall belonged.
The engagement with Louis Armstrong was on the one hand a secure job, but on the other he was permanently in the shadow of the great "Satch". In spite of this Allen achieved great popularity in the clubs, recorded many records and performed above all in New York, Boston and Chicago.
"Red" led more Dixie-orientated combos as of 1940, whereby he also integrated rhythm'n'blues elements. On top of that Allen recorded in the Forties with such jazz greats as Jelly Roll Morton and Sidney Bechet, and toured with Billie Holiday. The trumpeter went on his first European tour with Kid Ory's band in 1959. He returned to England twice as a soloist in the Sixties. A few years before his death Allen was described by Don Ellis as the "most creative and avantgarde trumpeter in New York".
Henry "Red" Allen was certainly one of the most important stylists of the Thirties, and was to be seen with his fluid, raucous style of playing somewhere between Louis Armstrong and Roy Eldridge.
The musician died on the 17th April, 1967 in New York.
