The "Original Dixieland Jazz Band" (ODJB)
played an important but controversial role in the history of jazz, and this position is supported by conflicting opinions and statements about the band. Even the exact date of their formation is not known. It is however confirmed that the ODJB was the first band to record a jazz record.
Dominick James "Nick" LaRocca
(1889 - 1961) and Edwin Branford "Eddie" Edwards (1891 - 1963) are reputed to be the original founder members. They had known each other in New Orleans, where they had played together in local bands and become close friends. Nick LaRocca was a cornet player and had spent several years in the band of Jack "Papa" Laine, as had most members of the ODJB's original line-up.
Edwards had played violin in his youth as accompanist of silent films, changed however later to the trombone. Around about 1914 /1915 the two friends Edwards and LaRocca formed a band, which was at that point in time without name. It was at a later recording that LaRocca supposedly spontaneously told the recording engineer the band name, which then became official.
The ODJB moved to Chicago in 1916 - as did so many other musicians from New Orleans - and performed in the "Booster Club". Alongside LaRocca and Edwards, the drummer Johnny Stein, the pianist Henry Ragas (1897 - 1919) and the clarinetist Alcide "Yellow" Nunez belonged to the original line-up, which was made up solely of white musicians.
After Tony Sbarbaro (1897 - 1969) replaced the drummer Johnny Stein, and Larry Shields (1893 - 1953) took the place of Nunez, the ODJB went in 1916 / 1917 to New York. Here they played in a new and very much "in" club and made a great impression. They had immediate success with their show, in which they wore hats with the inscription "Dixie", and in which the trombone was played periodically with the feet. LaRocca also made certain of extra public attention in that he described the ODJB to be "musical anarchists" in front of the press.
After being just 2 weeks in town Columbia recorded with them the songs "Darktown Strutters Ball" and "Indiana". The production was however unsatisfactory for all participants, and so the recording had to be repeated, which led to a delay in the release by Columbia. The ODJB recorded in the meantime the songs "Livery Stable Blues" and "Dixie Jazz Band One Step" for the record company "The Victor Talking Machine Company". The record came out on the 26th February 1917, and was as such the very first released jazz record in the history of music - and enjoyed enormous success in selling 1 million copies in the first year. This historical event heralded the arrival of the jazz era, and contributed significantly to the populisation of this direction of music.
In the following years the band recorded such classics as "Tiger Rag", "At The Jazz Band Ball", "Fidgety Feet", "Sensation", "Clarinet Marmalade", "Margie", "Jazz Me Blues" and "Royal Garden Blues". After J. Russel Robinson had replaced Ragas, who had died in the influenza epidemic of 1919, and Emile Christian had replaced Edwards, the ODJB played up until 1920 in London. The band was also a sensation in London and to a certain extent paved the way for jazz in Europe.
When the quintet returned to the States however they were confronted by the fact that they had gone out of fashion. Musicians such as Paul Whiteman, and as of 1922 the musically superior "New Orleans Rhythm Kings", were celebrating their first major successes. The ODJB lost further relevance as of 1923 when finally the first coloured jazz greats were allowed to record.
Internal differences and LaRocca's nervous breakdown caused a split in the band in 1925. LaRocca, Shields, Edwards, Robinson and Sbarbaro got together once again in 1936 to record a few last songs before LaRocca finally quit the music business to become an estate agent.
The band was very unpopular amongst coloured musicians for a substantial period of time on account of an arrogant and partly racial comment of LaRocca's that the ODJB had invented the jazz. It was claimed that the white musicians had only copied the music from their fellow Afro-American musicians, but had sold it as their own creation. Jazz was being played naturally long before the ODJB was formed, even by white formations such as Buddy Bolden's. The contribution of the ODJB during the early days of jazz and the importance of their influence on musicians such as Bix Beiderbecke and Red Nichols is however undisputed.
