The future "King of Swing", Benjamin David Goodman, was born on the 30th May, in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of Jewish immigrants and grew up with 11 brothers and sisters.
Benny Goodman learned to play the clarinet in a synagogue and took his first steps as a musician on the pleasure boats on the nearby Lake Michigan.
He worked for several years from the middle of the Twenties with Ben Pollack, but also played with several other bands. Goodman met the well-known music producer John Hammond in 1933, and was persuaded by Hammond to form his first big-band. Goodman eventually made his first breakthrough with this formation in the "Palomar Ball Room" in Los Angeles in 1935. Goodman's formation became the most popular big-band of the Swing era and the band-leader himself was declared to be the "King of Swing".
At the same time he formed a trio, to which Teddy Wilson and Gene Krupa belonged. This was the first time that a black musician - Teddy Wilson - had been brought into a white combo and as such Goodman made an important contribution towards racial integration.
The trio was expanded to a quartet in 1936 through Lionel Hampton. Charlie Christian joined in 1939 and the band worked later with changing line-ups as a septet. When Goodman moved with his family to California in 1947 - he had married John Hammond's sister in 1942 - Bebop had already taken over from Swing. Goodman, after a certain amount of initial sceptism, joined this new modern music style and took on young innovative musicians - amongst others Wardell Gray.
In spite of this Goodman celebrated his greatest successes in the Swing era. He toured the Far East, the Soviet Union and throughout Europe in the Fifties and Sixties. "The Benny Goodman Story", a film about his life-work, came out in 1955. Goodman also occupied himself with classical music, especially in the latter part of his musical career. He worked during his career as clarinetist, composer and band-leader with countless music greats. This remarkable "Jazz King" died on the 13th June, 1986 in New York.
Edmond Hall was born on the 15th May, 1901 in New Orleans, Louisiana, the focal point of jazz music. Ed grew up in a musical family: his father was a member of a brass band, one of the typical New Orleans street-bands with a large brass section. His younger brother Herb was also a talented clarinetist, as was Ed Hall. Two other brothers also worked as musicians.
Hall taught himself first of all the guitar before he changed over to the clarinet. He began his career at the age of 17 in diverse local bands. Amongst others he played with Bud Russell, Chris Kelly and Buddy Petit.
Hall eventually joined Alonso Ross' band in 1927 - the "Deluxe Syncopators", with whom he had his recording debut in the same year. He went with Ross' band to New York where he met Cootie Williams, who also worked for Ross.
After the formation split up Hall played in the bands of Billy Fowler, Charlie Skeets and Claude Young, with whom he stayed for 5 years and also played as baritone saxophonist. There then followed engagements with Lucky Millinder, Billy Hicks, Zutty Singleton, Joe Sullivan and Red Allen.
Hall was also highly acclaimed for his work between 1941 and 1943 in the band of the well-known pianist Teddy Wilson. The star soloist eventually formed his own formation and appeared regularly at the legendary "Cafe Society". He led a band at the end of the Forties in Boston, and later in California.
He once again caught the attention of the New York jazz scene between 1950 and 1955
- as clarinetist in Eddie Condon's club. He then replaced Barney Bigard as star soloist in Louis Armstrong's very first all-star formation and went on tour with this formation for 3 years.
The musician finally fulfilled a life-long dream and went with his wife to Accra in Ghana in 1959. Here he tried unsuccessfully to set up a jazz school. Back in New York Hall worked once again as a musician
- from 1962 predominantly with Eddie Condon. The clarinetist also took part increasingly in TV. shows and appeared in Europe and also in Japan with the "Dukes of Dixieland".
During his musical career Hall also worked with music greats such as Billie Holiday, Mildred Bailey, Lionel Hampton, Coleman Hawkins, Art Tatum and Harry Belafonte. Edmund Hall died on the 11th February, 1967 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, after a heart attack.
